I remember the outrage on there when they had Son Of Dork at #1 instead on Madonna

aah yes, the Woolies chart, although it rendered pointless last year when they had Chipz - Cowboy at No.1

they completely lost touch really, whereas previously they were great barometers for chart success...I became very excited when a song I loved was Woolies No.1, only to go in at No.3/4 in the UK, back in 1999-2004 era

the ultimate fail was surely Tommi's Like What though in 1999 which was tipped to go in at No.1 and went in at No.13 I think...or in 1999 they had Artful Dodger's Rewind going in at No.16 and it entered at No.2...I suppose some songs garnered more or less pre-orders than others!

It's one of the smaller ones.

I always used to get off the bus a couple of stops early on a Monday, pop in and check out the latest releases and their chart.

That was in the days before the internet.

Lol! I can't remember what it was now but I remember going in and getting really angry when they had a song I liked at #34 and then on Sunday it was in the top 10! I think it may have been The Bluetones I don't know

such a shame

the Woolworths in my city(Gloucester) is massive and i just can't think what could replace it

Well this should be a shot in the arm for other media retailers tbh.

Yeah but more likely it signals tough times ahead...

My nearest branch, Darlington, the branch near my work, Middlesbrough and the one I used to work at when I was living at home, Newark, all close on 27 December... :(

They got rid of my Woolies in York almost a year ago now. Was a bit weird to see it go, but I guess York's got a Zavvi and a HMV within a 5 minute walking distance of where Woolies was! Ofc it's not nice to see them all close down, but one persons failure is another ones gain. Once we're out of the incoming depression, a new company might take on what Woolies once was...

My nearest one's a small chav mecca so I tend to hit the city but it was convenient if I was short for time and desperately wanted a new CD.

I bought my Geri Halliwell Spice Girl doll there when I was younger :(

I assume we're not talking inflatable & anatomically correct, here? :naughty:

Apparently 15 high-store chains are rumoured to be going the same way in early 2009, according to "an expert", but I expect at least some of them will. However, no actual names were mentioned so they didn't speed up the situation.

Well if/when the first ones go, it will at least spread the market share amongst the remainder, presumably making them more likely to survive...

Newark 27 Dec 08

Woolies is the only place that sells singles in Newark!

Maidenhead 27th Dec..

That's mine..

I can't believe it, It was recently done up with a complete new digital section music/dvds etc with plasma Tv's etc..What exactly was the point?

Luckily Maidenhead has a Zavvi!

I remember when we had Musicbox/MVC/Virgin/Woolies..

All of which have gone..

Morpeth 30 Dec 08

 What am I going to do without this shop! Big sign outside of it saying 6 days left. Breaks my heart :(

Also can't believe Newcastle Upon Tyne 27 Dec 08, I thought that would go in 2009.

You're from Newark? Cool. There used to be a great one called R&K Records that had everything up until the early 2000s, when it went a bit weird and only sold skatepunk and hardcore...

Felixstowe 5 Jan 09

One of the last ones and its already virtually run out of (worthy) stock :( All of the 'chart' CDs they have are now on the shelves instead of hidden behind the counter to be swapped :( (Appart from like 100 Hallelujahs )

Will be sooooooooo sad to see it go :( Felixstowe, Sudbury & Woodbridge will be the last ones left in Suffolk :o I'm not sure if Beccles in Sufflok or not

Edinburgh (Big W) 5 Jan 09

And there goes part of my history (my first ever job was there). :(

Preston 27 Dec 08

My local Woolies is one of the first to go.

99 years old almost gets 100 at least mine closes in 09, but they might close earlier depending on if they have any stock left.

Not even close - the first one opened in November 1909.

Good riddance

Woolworths tended to employ the dregs of society, it was always lovely to just stand there in the queue for the CD section while the 2 assistants (probably cast offs from Phones 4U) were chatting about who they shagged the previous night and how drunk they got and just saw customers as an inconvenience in the way of talking non stop to each other about their debauchery :manson:

Well this should be a shot in the arm for other media retailers tbh.

if they can get any supplies after the collapse of EUK

Or if people have any sense Play.com

Woolies is an outdated concept selling cheap tat, tacky toys, tv's from companies never heard of and other assorted c**p to chavs and grannies

Their customer service was the worst by a country mile on the high street with 90% of them being uncaring unfriendly oiks who just saw customers as an inconvenience so far as I am concerned I will be glad to see them go they are a cancer to the name Customer Service
