Keep This Fire Burning , Beverly's version is the best, love that version muchly!

I agree, I don't think anyone else does it as good as her. I think she just has better songs.

See Aled, at least one other person has read this.

After You should have done so much better than #131 or whatever it was. Love Bev's version of Fire Burning, she just about manages to better the brilliant Robyn version aswell.

Yes, wow Aaron a whole 2 people, this countdown is on fire!

22. Supasonic [Affirmation]

At #22 is a track that I don't really associate with the "Affirmation" era as it doesn't particularly sound like much else on the album while I'd say the singles, "Straight Jacket" and "Tea & Sympathy" all have a certain sound to them. This is much more "Prodigal Sista" as it always reminds me of "Made It Back" and "Greatest Day". The video here is the "Come As You Are" one but the song is right. I seem to say this about every song but the chorus is really the best bit. I love the "Say yes, say no, don't take too long, blink and I'll be gone, long, long gone." line.

21. Ain't That A Lot Of Love [Music City Soul]

It turns out that "Music City Soul" had quite a few covers on it but this is certainly one of the best ones on there. It's quite a short song but it's full of energy and soul from Beverley which more than makes up for it. My favourite line is "If the bees only knew how sweet you were, baby, they would seal up their honey comb". Actually the verses are quite good, I like the line about cooks in the kitchen as well. The performance of this she did on Jools Holland was also very good and I listen to it about as often as the original so check it out if you haven't.

20. Tea & Sympathy [Affirmation]

Starting off the top 20 is a song that I thought would feature a lot higher. "Tea & Sympathy" is such a lovely album track and was probably my favourite album track when I first got the album. Then a few of them really stuck out and knocked this down. On this track Beverley seems to be coming onto a man who has a girlfriend that could be cheating. I can't quite imagine her doing that but this song just works somehow.

It's in my top 10. ^_^ album tracks

I think I will tomorrow but I'll be disappointed as no one will show up.

You never know, we might discover this site has loads of Bev fans. Or not.

Oops, I forgot to do the link. :( Anyway:

19. All My Living (Demo) [Music City Soul]

At #19 is a song that didn't make the cut for "Music City Soul", this is just the demo version so it could have been made even better. There's just something I like about this, it just seems cool but anything but cool at the same time. I feel like I would find it cool if I was a 60 year old man trying to be hip, clicking my fingers and tapping my foot. I'm practically an old man trapped in an 18 year old body anyway. This randomly reminds me of like Texas and cowboys and I have no idea why. Maybe it's because she has a bit of an American accent but other than that I DON'T KNOW. Answers on a postcard please?

18. Time Is On My Side (Nashville Acoustic Version) [Music City Soul]

Woo another cover, this time it's the Rolling Stones. I think she does it better than them - as always. Gosh I feel really old for liking this because all the things I like about it are quite characteristically old people things. The organ, the gospel choir, the clapping it all feels so 'old school' which I think is the point of this version. I certainly see what she means with trying to create a 'live' feel for this album on this track, her voice sounds so raw. I don't know if that sounds like a compliment to the track, but it was meant to be. Overall it's just perfect, such an improvement on the album version.

17. Till I See Ya [Affirmation]

I don't really know how to sum up why I like this song. It's just so catchy and instant for me. It's one of the best of the more upbeat songs on "Affirmation". I really like the lyrics, I'm not very good with analysing songs but I gather that it's meant to be about a couple on the verge of a break up. My favourite part is the bit that begins with "Until I see that vacant look in your eye" it's just lush tbh.

GOD. That last upload took far too long, I think it knew I was about to go to bed. I was just trying to upload a better version of "Till I See Ya" as my other one cuts off the last bit and this took so long to process. I'm going to bed now.

Till I See Ya  I will eventually enter this in BJSC at one point.

Good luck when you do. Are you going to decide depending on how 'Straight Jacket' does?

16. Trade It Up [Music City Soul]

Oh god yeah, everyone but me dislikes this track and thinks it's very much a filler. BUT THEY'RE WRONG! This was one of the more immediate "Music City Soul" tracks for me, it now sneaks into my top 5 from that album but it was never my favourite anyway. I love the build up to the chorus and the bits in the chorus where she sings and the choir like reply and of course the best bit: "STOP! and trade it up". Basically I like it all and anyone who says it's crap is wrong. :P

15. Not Too Late For Love [Affirmation]

Ooh yes. At first this one went over my head, with so many other good songs on the album it's hard not to. Then when I saw that it was quite a favourite on this album I went back and gave it proper attention and it really grew. I'm about to say it again but the chorus is just immense. "World is going crazy, everybodies spinning out of sync and out of time. Living in a movie waiting for the credits, don't you know it's real life?" (I went on a bit with the lyrics there ) She looks hot in the red dress in the video too. ^_^

14. Made It Back 99 [Prodigal Sista]

Nearly at the end of the "Prodigal Sista" songs now and it's "Made It Back 99" which I could have sworn is a cover of some old Disco classic, I really thought it was by someone like Shalamar before I knew about Bev. Which is weird because it turns out she was #26 in the first chart I ever listened to, so I should have known it. Maybe they skipped it. Anyway this was a good comeback for her after she left Dome Records I think. (though this wasn't the version they released at first) This seems a bit more camp than her output but I don't think that's particularly a bad thing, it's fun to sing along to.

Not Too Late For Love did shockingly bad chart wise, i was expecting something like bottom of the top 20. Trade It Up i disagree on, it's filler as far as im concerned. Made It Back is one of my favs of early Bev aswell.

As far as BJSC goes, not really since i've always entered the contest with songs i really like, not songs i think other people will like if you get what i mean. The expection to this is Superhuman which i regret entering to this day.

Oh yeah, it really deserved so much more, it sounds like one of those songs that could have been a hit if it was by someone more successful than Bev. Everyone else is wrong about "Trade It Up", I'm the only one that's right. ^_^

I try to do a bit of both but in the end I'm just gonna look more stupid when a song I thought could qualify fails to reach the final. As for 'Superhuman' I don't know what went wrong. Clearly people saw it as a knock-off 'No Air'.

I'll update this tomorrow, I'm a bit too tired to be gathering videos and commenting on songs right now.

I clearly should not have taken other peoples advice and should have gone with the original plan of Ashlee Simpson.

What song was that with? I wonder if she'd have qualified actually.

13. Every Time You See Me Smile [Music City Soul]

Gosh, that's a bit of a mouthful of a title and she packs a lot into the song too. Basically it's about putting on a front as Bev describes that she could be hurting, aching, crashing, burning and many more "-ing" words and she'll still be smiling. This song contains one of my favourite Beverley Knight lyrics "If there are tears in my eyes, you wont find them. Just like the clouds in my skies I will hide them." it just really sticks out to me. I guess it's because it's how I try to deal with things, by bottling them up. Anyway, yeah, this is unlucky thirteen in my chart but this is where the songs are seriously amazing for me, I'd probably rate them all 10/10 but I am obsessed.

12. Greatest Day [Prodigal Sista]

As expected, her second studio album is the second album to bow out of my countdown. (unless you count the GH exclusive tracks as an album.) The album, for me, is really carried by two great tracks and this is the highest one in my countdown, for now. I find it hard to choose between this and "Made It Back", I prefer a different one every day. Like "Made It Back", this seems like it came from the 70s or 80s where it was a classic, maybe in 1998/9 I went through a period where I was living in the past. It's just such an uplifting song to listen to, especially when you're having a good day. It does make Bev sound like a liar when you play it once a week, she can't have the greatest day of her life that often.

11. Relate [Come As You Are EP]

Just missing the top 10 is the, quite frankly, amazing B-side to "Come As You Are" making this the highest original B-side. (I know, a cover that's a B-side in the top 10?!) Why this didn't make "Affirmation" over slight duds like "Salvador" and the title track is a mystery as it's better than most of the songs that made the album. It's a soppy ballad from Beverley basically ending a relationship that isn't working. I really love the bit at about 3:15 where she really gets into the song with those big vocals. It's a shame she's said in interviews that she's looking to give everything a live feel from now on as, while that sounds really good too, I like the layered vocals on this towards the end.

3 fab songs there. Everytime... is one of my favs from MCS, GD is one of the best of the older Bev and i would actually agree that Relate is probably the best of the B-Sides.

I was at the time torn between Boys and Bittersweet World. I think i'll enter one of them in the future sometime.

  • Author

Every time... is my 4th favourite from MCS, no points for guessing the top 3. She has one more B-side for me, but it's not really hers so yeah.

I can't really remember those two, I'll have to listen to them again.

Anyway, in the top 10 there are:

4 'Affirmation' tracks

3 'Music City Soul' tracks

2 'Who I Am' tracks

1 B-side

Any predictions? I think most of them are really obvious - I'm too predictable. :(

So boring, which is slightly rich coming from someone who's 2 fav Bev songs are her 2 top 10's.

Do you actually remember any of the album except the single(s)

Yeah, so shut up you. Way to be a sheep. :smoke:

Not really, I haven't heard the album for a long time.

10. Trouble [Not Too Late For Love EP]

At #10 is a cover, a B-side and, perhaps more shockingly, a Coldplay song! According to iTunes this was a B-side to "Not Too Late For Love", which is a little lower in this, but I don't think it was on the CD singles. I didn't like Coldplay much until recently but I really appreciated them for this amazing song that Beverley puts her magic on. I could listen to this over and over again her voice is just spectacular on this. (I think it's live too) That piano bit is excellent, it's instantly recognisable and for some reason it sends shivers down my spine or something along those lines, I can't explain it. This sounds boring but it's really one of those songs you just have to sit in silence and listen to. So thanks Coldplay for writing and producing this lovely song but thanks Beverley for making it that bit better. (gotta love some female bias )

LOL, dont think i've heard that before. Will give it a listen later.
