January 24, 200917 yr Author LOL, dont think i've heard that before. Will give it a listen later. Not even the Coldplay one? You're well missing out, it's actually amazing. 09. Shoulda Woulda Coulda [Who I Am] RI5g7uag2nU Allow me to bit a bit predictable now, at #9 is Beverley's biggest selling hit, and even that didn't make 100k. :drama: This is the song I think of when I think about Beverley, her defining song if you will. I wont even go into the idiotic decision of not releasing this as lead when it could have done so much more. It sounds like a nice, relaxing, chill-out song but the lyrics are full of regret and looking on lost opportunity so I can see why it did well, people love a good song to cry along to. The opening line of this is another one of my favourites of hers: "People say that together we were both sides of the same coin". I'm not very good at explaining but I find it's a good image as it manages to be quite sad but also happy at the same time? I feel like I say this every time but her voice excels on this, it's just so lovely and soulful. A very deserved top 10 for her when many tracks of hers have failed to get that far. :( Edited January 24, 200917 yr by Aaron™
January 24, 200917 yr ^^^If i ever feel stupid enough tp audition to the X-Factor that is what i will sing LOL. A fab song
January 25, 200917 yr Author ^^^If i ever feel stupid enough tp audition to the X-Factor that is what i will sing LOL. A fab song LOL do it, I'd know it was you because as if any other Welsh people would be singing Beverley Knight. I'll do the next one some time later, I don't have my Excel file and I forgot which song is next.
January 25, 200917 yr LOL, i wonder if id be allowed to. They always seem to only sing songs which are remembered.
January 26, 200917 yr Author You probably would, but I'd doubt they'd show you unless you were amazing. 08. Straight Jacket [Affirmation] JvfJD7JoVEk Simon's latest entry to the Buzzjack Song Contest finishes 8th in my top 40, this is certainly one of the highligts of "Affirmation" and her career. This song isn't about Beverley being taken away by the men in white coats, but about being in a very controlling relationship. While a lot of songs rely on a catchy chorus with less effort put on the verses, I think this has very strong verses and a good chorus. I think I could even prefer the verses, there's just something about them. I rarely manage to memerise whole songs but this is one of them that I can probably sing all the way through without making a mistake. My favourite part of the song is the bit that begins with "Cause we've been banging our heads..." as it's a bit of build up which is always enjoyable.
January 26, 200917 yr Or terrible, which is more likely. Straight Jacket is amazing. My mum's convinced it's about being gay by the way and not being accepted and such.
January 27, 200917 yr Author Or terrible, which is more likely. Straight Jacket is amazing. My mum's convinced it's about being gay by the way and not being accepted and such. Aww, are you not a good singer then? Hmm I can see where your mum's coming from I guess put on the whole I'd say she's wrong. Is she thinking a straight jacket is an item of clothing for straight people, rather than one of those things they put psychos in? :kink: I guess you could say "Please, please understand my choice why you trying to stifle my voice?" could be interpreted that way but being gay isn't a choice...or maybe the "I'm sorry that my life didn't turn out as you meant" line. Yeah, I can see aspects of it but the whole "I'm no little girl, I'm the woman you raised" line kinda blows the idea out of the water, no? Edited January 27, 200917 yr by Aaron™
January 27, 200917 yr Im OK at times i guess, tbh i dont know no one says im amazing but no one's pointed out im awful either. LOL, those were all the lines she pointed out aswell. And lol at Straight Jacket being a piece of clothing for straight people.
January 28, 200917 yr Author Im OK at times i guess, tbh i dont know no one says im amazing but no one's pointed out im awful either. LOL, those were all the lines she pointed out aswell. And lol at Straight Jacket being a piece of clothing for straight people. They're probably being polite then. Well, when I look at those lyrics, those are the only ones that I could see being related to being gay. What? If she thought that I could certainly see her opinion a bit more, the chorus would work I guess. But yeah, she's blates wrong. I don't think Bev is trying to tell us she's a lesbian.
January 28, 200917 yr Author 07. No Man's Land [Music City Soul] ijS-67AGQJI At #7 is the lead single from "Music City Soul". "The Queen Of Starting Over" was the first song I heard from this era and when I heard that this was the lead single I thought "OMG this is so dull!" but that feel so wrong now. This is quite clearly one of her most beautiful songs, you just have to give it a while to appreciate it. This is why I think it was a bit of a bad choice for a lead single, despite being great. Something more instant like "Black Butta" or "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" should have kicked off the album imo. This is the only song my chavvy 12 year old brother likes by her, it still amuses me that a Soulja Boy and Ironik fan can like Bev at all. The chorus is simple, but effective, I think this is all about the verses though. I love the "But I will riiiiise to start again" bit. She also has a Nashville version of this which is just as good I think and I wish I could have seen her do this live as I absolutely love the acoustic version she did on Loose Women, it really shows why she's so great. tbF11uXyiQk (Live Acoustic on Loose Women)
January 28, 200917 yr No Mans Land   It is a masterpiece, well not really but it's still brilliant.
January 29, 200917 yr Author It is, it's one of those songs that I listen to in awe, especially the live version. It's kinda sad but uplifting at the same time. I can't be bothered to update this today, I'm feeling lazy.
January 30, 200917 yr Author LOL, im in a slightly crazy demented mood Aren't you always? :o 06. Come As You Are [Affirmation] JufzLn3Ho2A Ooh a lead single Beverley got right at #6. Well, I prefer some others from this album but as lead singles they'd be rubbish. This was her second and last top 10, her highest peaking hit yet I'd say it's her third or fourth most remembered hit. I think most people would have this higher on their list but I'm a bit of a sucker for her ballads, it's my second highest upbeat song. This is just a killer of a song, I still get excited when I hear "The weather's hot like hell" opening line. If I listened to music in 2004 properly this would have no doubt been the soundtrack to my summer. I particularly like the bit that begins with "Got to give a shout out" and the way she says "what a sister like me is talking bout" within that bit. ^_^ This is a proper mood changer, it always makes me happy when I hear this.
January 30, 200917 yr Come As You Are is literally one of my favorite songs of all time if not my favorite.
February 2, 200917 yr Author Come As You Are is literally one of my favorite songs of all time if not my favorite. As if Girls Aloud would be lower than any Bev songs. -_- 05. No One Ever Loves In Vain [Affirmation] An-7CfDd8s0 Kicking off my top 5 is a song that's just ahh - so perfect! At first it may seem a bit dull but, like "No Man's Land", you just have to give it a few listens for it to have full effect. The fact that this song is so personal to her (presumably it's about Tyrone who she lost to AIDs) just makes it harder not to like. All this real emotion, combined with the piano, makes my hairs stand on end. My favourite line is the "yet through the tears I smile and say I'm so glad you came" bit. Not sure why, maybe I'm evil and like picturing people in tears? This is one of my absolute favourites from "Affirmation", the whole album is immense but this is just on another level for me. When I think of what I've got up high on this list it makes me feel well old, this is exactly the stuff her 45-64 year old fans would love. Anyway, I'm 18 and I love it. :dancing: I'd love to see it live but the performance will have to do as I doubt she'll ever sing it live again. 7-ZveuzGqBE
February 3, 200917 yr A true beauty of a song. I take my statement of Come As You Are Back, it's probably second to Biology actually.
February 4, 200917 yr Author Yay! You don't hate it. Hmm...Biology is a decentish song I guess. I don't really know where I stand on Girls Aloud as a whole, I kinda have a love hate relationship with them. I pretty much like everything they've done but they don't excite me that much apart from the odd track.
February 4, 200917 yr It does seem to be that Biology is considered one of their best song by everyone except the stalkers/obsessive fans.
