Posted January 11, 200916 yr Majority of WHSmith stores will be discontinuing stocking of Music from Monday next week. So you might want to pop in to your local store and pick up a bargain. I went to Slough (its in berkshire) today to visit my Gran and went with my cousin to their high street. They now only have one music outlet there and thats HMV! Their WHSmith already stopped selling music this week. It's quiet shocking as Slough has a population of over 110K and their HMV music store also serves Windsor as their last music store (woolworths) closed down last week. Maybe this year will see a huge downturn in music sales in the UK
January 11, 200916 yr Well to be fair, I think if the people at the head of WHSmiths wanted to, they could make a killing with the death of Woolworths, and maybe Zavvi. But their CDs are heavily over-priced, poor range and we don't know how much they have to sell to break-even. It does look like the the physical CD might be dying sooner than we thought tho.
January 11, 200916 yr Not surprised. Their chart albums are always more than £10 and they only stock the top 20 and selected compilations. No loss.
January 11, 200916 yr Author I think the decision was made for them... I have a feeling they are struggling to get stock just as Zavvi has on favourable credit terms after the demise of EUK. I wonder if borders will be the next to stop!
January 11, 200916 yr Which shops do still sell albums and singles then? HMV (both), Borders (albums), Zavvii (for the minute), where else?
January 11, 200916 yr I can't believe this! I live in Maidenhead and again this means we only have Zavvi, well the future looks bright doesn't it! I bet Zavvi goes now then I can't buy music in town, I'll have to shop online on HMV or Play.com/Cdwow. Or go to Slough and visit HMV, but I recently brought Pirates of the Carribean boxset for £15 and there selling it online for £11.99 plus free postage! :( All there prices are cheaper online as there sent direct from Guernsey! This really is Sh*t!
January 11, 200916 yr I sure hope Aberystwyth isn't one of them. Smiths is our major music place now that woolies is gone.
January 11, 200916 yr Which shops do still sell albums and singles then? HMV (both), Borders (albums), Zavvii (for the minute), where else? Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons all sell albums. I think the supermarkets will keep the physical CD market alive
January 11, 200916 yr I haven't bought a Cd in Smiths for years. Their prices are ridiculous and i'm not suprised this has happened. Serves them right! Edited January 11, 200916 yr by Glyn
January 11, 200916 yr it's the end of the music industry as we know it.... sales will become so low this year...
January 11, 200916 yr Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons all sell albums. I think the supermarkets will keep the physical CD market alive Yeah if you like Leon Jackson and Il Divo.
January 11, 200916 yr Not much of a loss really. They've not stocked CD singles since 2004 and their albums are always extremely overpriced compared to everywhere else. Another blow for the physical format though. Anyone else think that by 2010, the iTunes chart will be pretty much identical to the main one?
January 11, 200916 yr Music is not their core business, their main business is books and magazines so CD's were just an add on that they didn't care about really, their prices reflected the fact that it was a half hearted effort, no massive loss
January 11, 200916 yr Oh well will have to travel to cardiff now for cds as only was in whsmiths and woolies in barry Whsmiths have been out of stock of so many albums since december i could see it coming to be honest they sell them at rip of prices as well
January 11, 200916 yr I find this quite shocking actually. I work at smiths and as far as we've been told, we've found a new supplier [as our last was EUK] and that whilst we'd be removing our DVD range DVD's and keeping only Promotion and Chart, we'd be keeping Chart CD's... Unless things have changed dramatically over the past 2 days, which I wasnt aware they had as I've been at work, Im not sure this information is entirely accurate? I could be wrong though. And everyone is totally right, WHSmith's CD's are entirely overpriced, their DVD's are too...

Like I said in the earlier post, they have already stopped selling music and that more stores were going to stop music as well.
January 11, 200916 yr You must be joking. :( If this closes then there's no music shop for 18 miles!
January 11, 200916 yr I have never bought a CD album from Whsmith, albums are overpriced, soon the only places you can buy an album will be supermarkets, and they don't stock any old back catalogues, you just have to find a small specialist music shop to find them, mind you specialist shops are dying out very slowly. Thank god for HMV, let's hope they don't bite
January 12, 200916 yr WHSmith just can’t compete with the supermarkets and online stores so from their perspective it’s a smart move, as high street music retail seems to be haemorrhaging money at the moment. Just hope HMV can survive what is bound to be one of if not the most challenging years of its existence.
