Posted January 25, 200916 yr New Yorker Lady GaGa has clocked up a third consecutive week at the top of the UK charts with Just Dance, which features Colby O’Donis. No.2 is another non-mover, Day ‘N’ Nite by Kid Cudi vs. Crookers, whilst No.3 goes to Tinchy Stryder and Taio Cruz with Take Me Back, which soars from No.39 last week. Lady GaGa’s Just Dance was run close by Kid Cudi’s Day ‘N’ Nite last week but regains a lead this week, once again pulling ahead of the dance/rap crossover at No.2. Joining them in the top three this week oddly enough, is another dance/rap crossover record, although a home grown one this time. Rising star and rapper Tinchy Stryder did not find much success with debut single Stryderman, which could only peak at No.73 in the UK, but Take Me Back, storms up from No.39 to No.3 after a physical release and after the radio edit of the digital single was released. Last week the song had made it into the top forty on the strength of remixes alone which was a sign of things to come for the track. It is also the biggest hit for producer and singer Taio Cruz, eclipsing the No.5 peak of Come On Girl from around a year ago exactly. James Morrison & Nelly Furtado slide a place to No.4 with their huge hit Broken Strings, The Saturdays are down a spot to No.5 with the ballad Issues and Let It Rock by Kevin Rudolf and Lil’ Wayne is also down one at No.6 this week. Beyoncé stays at No.7 with Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) which oddly enough has been pencilled in for a physical release on February 9th despite the fact that it was the b-side to her last single If I Were A Boy. Kings Of Leon remain at No.8 with Use Somebody and Pink makes a triumphant surge into the top ten following the physical release of Sober. The song, like Issues and The Loving Kind in previous weeks, soars from the lower end of the top thirty into the low top ten, moving from No.26 to No.9 this week to give the American superstar her fourteenth UK top ten hit to date. The follow up to the No.1 hit So What, Pink, Girls Aloud, The Saturdays, James Morrison, Leona Lewis, Katy Perry, Kings Of Leon and Beyoncé all seemed to have bucked the recent trend of acts not being able to have more than one top ten hit at a time, perhaps suggesting that it is once again going to become more commonplace for acts to have strings of hit singles. Kanye West’s is another act to join that list as he follows the top ten single Love Lockdown with another top ten hit, Heartless. The second single from his current album 808s & Heartbreaks, it climbs a spot to No.10 this week. The top ten therefore includes seven American acts, two British acts and one Canadian/British duet. Alesha Dixon looks increasingly liked to join the ‘consecutive top ten hits club’ as Breathe Slow, the second single from her album The Alesha Show, continues to leap up the charts, climbing ten places to No.13 this week. Franz Ferdinand score the highest new entry this week, going in at No.20 with Ulysses. It is the first hit for the Scottish indie/rock act since Eleanor Put Your Boots On reached No.30 in 2006. Ulysses is the first single to be taken from the band’s third album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. The band’s eponymous debut album, despite only peaking at No.3 was by far the biggest selling of the two and spawned their hugely successful debut single Take Me Out in early 2004. US singer/songwriter Jason Mraz continues to make steady progress with the laidback single I’m Yours, which has already been huge worldwide. The single jumps from No.28 to No.22 this week. Jay Sean returns at No.23 with his new single Tonight. It is Jay’s sixth UK top forty single since 2003, his biggest hit being 2004’s No.4 hit Stolen. Lady GaGa’s forthcoming second single, Poker Face, moves up four places to No.26 whilst other climbers inside the top forty come from Jordin Sparks’ One Step At A Time, which jumps ten places to No.28, now her third consecutive top thirty hit, The Saturdays’ Up, which is back up a place to No.32 and To Lose My Life by White Lies, which bucks the usual indie rock trend by climbing the charts in the week after its physical release, jumping a spot to a new peak of No.34, aided by cherry picked album downloads. The only other new entry this week is at No.37. American singer/songwriter Bon Iver, real name Justin Vernon, sees his new EP release, Blood Bank creep into the top forty this week to give him his biggest success to date. The album chart, as expected, sees a new No.1 from alternative rock act White Lies, who scored their first top forty single last week with To Lose My Life, which is also the name of their debut album. The band finished second in BBC’s Sound Of 2009 poll recently. Kings Of Leon stay at No.2 with their million selling opus Only By The Night whilst The Script dip two places to No.3 with their eponymous debut album. Lady GaGa’s The Fame dips one at No.4 and James Morrison’s Songs For You, Truths For Me also slides a place at No.5 this week. Duffy’s Rockferry falls one to No.6 whilst Beyoncé’s I Am…Sasha Fierce moves up a place to No.7. Jason Mraz’s UK career has been a long time coming after he released his first single, The Remedy, in 2003. He finally defies the odds and reaches the UK top ten this week with his new album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, which features the current hit I’m Yours and is still on sales for £4.99 in most shops this week. The album climbs three places to No.8 this week just ahead of another top ten newcomer. Chasing Lights by The Saturdays reached No.11 on its release a few months ago but finally climbs into the top ten this week. Buoyed by the success of the top ten singles, If This Is Love, Up and Issues, the album climbs from No.14 to No.9 this week. Finally, MGMT bounce back into the top ten at No.10 with their debut album Oracular Spectacular. Next week’s chart should easily see Lily Allen debut at No.1 with new single The Fear, which would give the Londoner a second UK No.1 single. Lady GaGa, Tinchy Stryder & Taio Cruz, Kid Cudi vs. Crookers and James Morrison & Nelly Furtado should all stay at the top end of the chart with few other big single releases due. Physically released singles that could have an impact on next week’s chart are due from The Fray, Ida Maria and Jay Sean whilst download entries can be expected from The All American Rejects, Shontelle and Fleet Foxes. The album chart should see a new No.1 from Bruce Springsteen who releases Working On A Dream on Monday. Franz Ferdinand’s third album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand should enter at No.2 whilst other top seventy five new entries could be due from The Rifles, Jon Frusciante and Frank Turner.
