Last week, the gang scored 36 in the 40, and 47 in the 50 on the singles chart. With 24 in the Combined top 30 albums (awash with late climbing albums for Valentine`s Day, pushed it out)! Back in February 1977, Radio Luxembourg came up with this: 01 02 WHEN I NEED YOU - LEO SAYER 02 01 DON`T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA - JULIE COVINGTON 03 09 DON`T LEAVE ME THIS WAY - HAROLD MELVIN AND THE BLUENOTES 04 11 JACK IN THE BOX - THE MOMENTS 05 04 DADDY COOL - BONEY M 06 07 CAR WASH - ROSE ROYCE 07 05 SIDE SHOW - BARRY BIGGS 08 03 ISN`T SHE LOVELY - DAVID PARTON 09 29 CHANSON D`AMOUR - MANHATTEN TRANSFER 10 06 SUSPICION - ELVIS PRESLEY 11 10 DON`T GIVE UP ON US - DAVID SOUL 12 13 BOOGIE NIGHTS - HEATWAVE 13 17 SING ME - THE BROTHERS 14 15 NEW KID IN TOWN - EAGLES 15 12 I WISH - STEVIE WONDER 16 NE THIS IS TOMORROW - BRYAN FERRY 17 20 EVERYBODY`S TALKIN``BOUT LOVE - SILVER CONVENTION 18 21 WHAT CAN I SAY - BOZ SCAGGS 19 19 IT TAKES ALL NIGHT LONG - GARY GLITTER 20 22 MORE THAN A FEELING - BOSTON 21 NE DON`T LEAVE ME THIS WAY - THELMA HOUSTON 22 NE I WANNA GO BACK - NEW SEEKERS 23 23 THE MIGHTY POWER OF LOVE - TAVARES 24 25 WAKE UP SUSAN - DETROIT SPINNERS 25 NE ROMEO - MR BIG 26 27 THE YEAR OF THE CAT - AL STEWART 27 NE THEY SHOOT HORSES DON`T THEY - RACING CARS 28 28 BRICK - DAZZ 29 30 GYPSY ROAD HOG - SLADE 30 NE DARLIN`DARLIN` BABY - O`JAYS Luxembourg got 24 in the 30 in 1977, when the 70s were well in their heyday. LEO SAYER and JULIE COVINGTON battling it out. With Julie increasing popularity by starring in ROCK FOLLIES (both in 76, & 77). I do note that those 2 series have never been repeated. It was a rather heavy going programme, but the music was pretty good with the likes of "Glen Miller Is Missing", and "O.K." HAROLD MELVIN battled it out with THELMA HOUSTON. Thelma lost in Britain, but won in the States...the UK had taste then! The MOMENTS had lost their WHATNAUTS by now, and JACK IN THE BOX was well played. BONEY M had their first single, as did ROSE ROYCE. BARRY BIGGS gave his reggae version of a previous Euro hit for BLUE MAGIC. DAVID PARTON (writer/producer/singer) gave a similar sounding version of ISN`T SHE LOVELY like STEVIE WONDER (who refused to cut his version for single release). MANHATTEN TRANSFER went 50s style for a re-worked version of ART AND DOTTY TODD`s 1958 hit. ELVIS P gave a 1962 re-release. HEATWAVE had their first hit. THE BROTHERS won OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS for a single on the BUS STOP label, a bit like PAPER LACE did in 1974. The Eagles had a top 20 hit at last. BRYAN FERRY was going solo, away from ROXY MUSIC. Radio Luxembourg over estimated the SILVER CONVENTION and GARY GLITTER singles. BOZ SCAGGS scored his first, and only top 10 hit...although he did write "We`re all Alone" (a hit for RITA COOLIDGE, later in 1977). BOSTON brought us the rocky "More Than A Feeling". The NEW SEEKERS were struggling on without the lead of LYN PAUL. TAVARES were scoring minor, but come back to the front later in 77. The DETROT SPINNERS were on a bit of an anniversary in the year, and did much better in 1980. The original MR BIG gave us a first, and dodgy hit. AL STEWART finally scraped the chart, after many near misses in the 60s/70s...remember "Bedsitter Images" in 1967? RACING CARS gave us the wonderful "They Shoot Horses Don`t They", but could not get a follow up hit. The O`JAYS got the top 30, but SLADE were on their last legs, before a comeback after the 1980 Reading Festival...as DAZZ never really made it at all.
February 16, 200916 yr Thanks Dave. Suprisingly low for U2, and worryingly low of Empire Of The Sun on both singles and albums (I thought the album would be top 20, and the single top 40!)
February 16, 200916 yr Author Thanks Dave. Suprisingly low for U2, and worryingly low of Empire Of The Sun on both singles and albums (I thought the album would be top 20, and the single top 40!) Think we have to wait to see if their downloads pick up, Tom. Empire of the Sun is only on limited physical single release, so a case of hope the downloads push up a bit, and more people get the album.
February 16, 200916 yr I've ordered the Empire of the Sun CD single its limited on White 7 inch vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. ==== I think Kings Of Leon will be #1 after their Brits performance on Weds/Thurs, I can't see Lily Allen holding on. She will be #1 tomorrow and Weds/Thurs on both charts, the #1 on Fri might change. Album top 3 could look like this on Sunday, it certainly be interesting 1 KoL 2 Lily Allen 3 James Morrison Even James could have a shoe in As for the single I think U2 could pull it of after Thursday, but Lily should hold on till Weds/Thurs at least, maybe Thurs as the Brits are transmiited from 8pm.

February 16, 200916 yr Is Empire Of The Sun - Walking On A Dream going to be chart eligible?
February 16, 200916 yr Take That as high as 5? What happened that I don't know about? Norma It was #2 in my WHSmith today. I have no idea why, it can't be Valentines Day because thats gone now... I really don't know!
February 16, 200916 yr Take That are at the Brit awards, which is probably why it'll climb again :P I could understand a climb after ... but not before! I was actually very surprised that it went up from 24 to 17 in the main chart yesterday. Glad, as about half a dozen songs on there are great (there are a few that are crap like) but we won't go into that! I know Morrisons have the top 20 odd albums going for £7 now ... so I suppose quite a few artists will see their albums go up in the charts. Absolutely peed off that Take That aren't doing their new song at the Brits ... ensuring it'll almost certainly miss even a top 5 place now! Norma
February 16, 200916 yr These shop charts are essentially what they anticipate they are going to sell each week and certain titles they want to push. So they expect more demand for Take That after the BRITs, which would seem sensible.
February 16, 200916 yr Just for a nice change, the charts are unpredictable this week - anything may happen after the Brits! I do think Lily will hold on at the top on both charts though.

February 16, 200916 yr Is Kylie presenting the Brit Awards? Maybe X her album may sneek back into the top 100 :)
