Posted February 15, 200916 yr Lily does the double while there are mixed fortunes for the return of some highly regarded veteran acts. 01 01 Lily Allen The Fear The Fear duly spends a third consecutive week at the top of the singles listings to beat her previous chart topper Smile’s two weeks at No1 in the summer of 2006. While her second album It’s Not Me, It’s You beats the No2 peak of her 2006 debut album Alright Still to score her first UK No1 album. Thus becoming the first act since P!nk in October 2008 to simultaneously top both the album and singles listings (So What & Funhouse). The current run of four extended No1’s: Leona Lewis (2), Alexandra Burke (3), Lady GaGa (3) and Lily Allen (3*); is the longest since 5 records spent more than a week at No1 between December 2007 and May 2008: Leon Jackson (3), Basshunter (5), Duffy (5), Estelle (4) and Madonna (4). If this proves to be The Fear’s last week at No1 then it will be first time since the summer of 1986 that three consecutive No1’s have spent 3 weeks at the top when Madonna, Chris De Burgh and Boris Gardiner achieved the feat in succession. 02 02 Lady GaGa Feat. Colby O’ Donis Just Dance Just Dance becomes the first former No1 since Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl to spend 3 consecutive weeks at No2. With this week likely to be the 7th successive that Lady GaGa has posted sales of above 40k it has to be said that she has been somewhat unlucky to have ‘only’ spent 3 weeks at No1. 05 03 Alesha Dixon Breathe Slow Former member of UK girl band Mis-Teeq and 2007 Strictly Come Dancing Champion Alesha Anjanette Dixon’s fourth solo single Breathe Slow, becomes her biggest solo success to date following it’s physical release and surpasses the No5 peak of The Boy Does Nothing last November. Out of her 8 hits with Mis-Teeq only 2 charted higher than Breathe Slow with All I Want (2001) and Scandalous (2003) both reaching No2. NEW 08 Prodigy Omen The Prodigy are the biggest selling dance act of all time having shifted over 16 million albums worldwide. Formed in 1990 in Braintree, Essex they pioneered the big beat electronic sound that was born from the early 90’s rave culture. Early hits included Charly (3), Everybody In The Place (2) and Out Of Space (5) and cemented their reputation and propelled the album Experience to a very credible No12. However it wasn’t until the release of Music For A Jilted Generation that their career took off, the album a protest against the legislation that criminalized raves reached No1 and spawned the hits: One Love (8), No Good (Start The Dance) (4), Voodoo People (13) and Poison (15). With their third studio album Fat Of The Land the focus shifted from beat driven tracks to a more vocally driven sound. The result was more commercial and produced 2 No1 hits in 1996: Firestarter and Breathe which both sold well over 600k a piece. The album released in the summer of 1997 duly stormed to the top of charts and remained at No1 for an incredible 6 weeks! However mainstream success didn’t sit well with the Prodigy and in the fall of 1997 they released the highly controversial Smack My Bitch Up as a method of ‘self destructing their new found popularity’. The video to which is still regarded by many as the most shocking of all-time. 2002 saw a brief return with the EP Baby’s Got A Temper, however with more references to drugs it wasn’t very well received although did reach No5 in it’s first week. Liam Howlett returned on his own under the Prodigy guise with the 2004 No1 Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned album that spawned the singles Girls (19), Hotride and Spitfire. A year later they released a Greatest Hits compilation Their Law – The Singles 1990-2005 that also reached No1 and saw the Pendulum remix of Voodoo People reach the top20. Omen is the second single from their long awaited fifth album Invaders Must Die out on the 23rd February and is the first to feature all the members of the group since Fat Of The Land in 1997. The first single and title track Invaders Must Die was given away for free on their website last November. Omen shows the Prodigy have come full circle back to a more beat-driven sound which has once again propelled them back into the top10 for the 10th time in 19 years. 13 10 Shontelle T-Shirt Following in the footsteps of fellow Barbadian singer Rihanna Shontelle’s debut UK single moves into the top10 for the first time having advanced 43-25-13-10- in recent weeks and is due to be physically released on 23rd February 2009. Rounding out the top10: Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent’s collaboration sticks at No4 4-4-, Tinchy Stryder Feat. Taio Cruz Take Me bows 3-4-3-5- and James Morrison arrests his recent slide 2-3-4-5-7- and climbs back up a place. Beyoncé’s Single Ladies, which is out physically tomorrow, is back up 2 places to its No7 peak 8-7-7-8-9-7- and after five weeks on the chart Kid Cudi vs Crookers slip 3 places to No9 2-2-3-6-9-. 20 18 The All-American Rejects Gives You Hell This four piece American rock band from Okalahoma reach a new peak this week with Gives You Hell from their 3rd studio album When The World Comes Down. It is now their joint second biggest UK hit along with the 2006 reissue of Dirty Little Secret but still trails their No 13 2003 debut Swing Swing. NEW 21 Morrissey I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris The week’s biggest physical seller comes from arguably one of the most influential artists of all time. An iconic lyrist he came to prominence as the vocalist and one half of a writing partnership of The Smiths whose biggest success came in 1992 when This Charming Man was re-released and reached No8. After The Smiths split in 1987 Morrissey embarked on a very successful and critically acclaimed solo career beginning with Suedehead, which reached No5 in February 1988. Morrissey’s biggest solo hits to date remain Irish Blood, English Heart (2004) and You Have Killed Me (2006) which both reached No3. Morrissey had been enjoying a career renaissance in terms of chart positions in the mid 00’s with falling sales and a strong fan base ensuring a high first week debut. While I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris may well be the week’s strongest physical the download by contrast has been lingering apologetically outside of the top50 on iTunes all week and has stunted his chart position. He just misses out on claiming a 22nd top20 solo success. 24 22 Lady GaGa Poker Face Providing one of the most fascinating chart runs for a while moving: 30-26-28-24-22- since The Fame was added to download sites on the 11th January. Poker Face has been confirmed as the second single and with a video finally hitting the music channels further progress towards the top10 is assured. 40 25 N-Dubz Strong Again The third single from the Camden Hip Hop group’s No11 debut studio album Uncle B gains momentum and follows Ouch (22) and Papa Can You Hear Me? (19) into the top25. Although with the physical having been cancelled it is debateable if this can still progress further in 7 days time. Thus far it has moved 54-64-64-57-54-54-40-25- in the last 8 weeks. 37 27 The Saturdays Up Last Sunday’s Dancing On Ice and the publicity from the announcement that The Saturdays’ will be singing this year’s official Comic Relief charity single: a cover of Depeche Mode’s 1981 No8 Hit Just Can’t Get Enough; has seen their second single Up rebound 10 places this week. 47 30 T.I. Feat. Justin Timberlake Dead And Gone The third release from US rapper T.I.’s Paper Trail album following on from the November 2008 No2 smash with Rihanna Live Your Life and the minor No47 Whatever You Like, which was a US No1 smash. While he is currently one of the biggest stars stateside with 6 studio albums under his belt, he has generally struggled to make an impact over here with Paper Trail his only charting album that has yet to advance further than No49. Justin Timberlake returns the favour as T.I. featured on his 2006 No2 hit My Love and also featured on top20 hits for Madonna (1) and Rihanna (16) last year. Without a physical release a top 20 placing may well prove a step beyond this even with the input of serial collaborator Timberlake. 45 33 M.I.A. Paper Planes It’s use in the current film “Slumdog Millionaire” and exposure at the Grammy awards sees M.I.A.’s Paper Planes re-enter the top40 after a 14-week hiatus. 42 37 The Fray You Found Me A timely re-entry for The Fray with Valentines Day having just passed and people cherry picking the track from their album which debuts at No8. 57 40 The Killers Spaceman Following it’s physical release the second single from Las Vegas rockers The Killers third studio album Day & Age just scrapes into the top40 by the skin of it’s teeth. Unless it can make further progress in the coming weeks then it will be their smallest hit since For Reasons Unknown only made No53. With Human still at No24 in its 14th week on the chart one must suspect the previous hit is overshadowing the newer one. Album Chart As mentioned earlier Lily Allen’s second album It’s Not Me, It’s You goes one better than her 2006 debut Alright Still and enters at No1. Last weeks No1 from Bruce Springsteen collapses 1-1-7-. The Kings Of Leon’s million selling Only By The Night, which has moved: 1-1-2-3-3-4-6-4-6-7-5-4-3-3-2-1-2-2-3-2-2- since it’s released last September continues to sell well. The singles taken from it continue to show a similar level of consistence Sex On Fire moves 23-19- while Use Somebody slides 11-12- Valentines day had a massive impact on the album chart with the 14th falling on the Saturday allowing a full week of build up to count towards this week’s chart. UB40’s Love Songs collection leads the way moving 19-3- providing them with their first top3 album since Promises And Lies topped the chart for 7 weeks in 1993. Love Songs is also the title of Luther Vandross’s album that leaps 27-4- and similarly provides him with his biggest success since Songs topped the album chart in the fall of 1994. A curious oddity is that The View have moved 4-27- in opposite direction with Which Bitch. The enduring success of Broken Strings sees James Morrison’s top3 album success: Songs For You Truths For Me; return to the top5. Meanwhile Bette Middler’s Best Of Bette returns to her October 2008 No6 peak following exposure on Dancing On Ice and Loose Women. Rounding off the top10: The Fray enter at #8 with their self-titled follow up to their debut album How To Save A Life which reached #4 in March 2007. The Killers former No1 Day & Age dips a place to No9 and finally Pavarotti The Duets leaps 5 places to No10. Next Week Lily Allen will be looking to extend her stay at the top of the singles chart to four weeks, which would be the longest run at the top since Katy Perry’s five-week stint with I Kissed A Girl. Will Lady GaGa still be her closest challenger or could U2 (downloads and physical) top the charts in 7 days time and claim their 8th UK No1 single? Physical releases also due out from: The Prodigy, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Empire Of The Sun, Rudenko and Sway. On the album chart Morrissey will provide strong competition for Lily for next weeks No1. How will the highly regarded Empire Of The Sun do? Edited February 15, 200916 yr by Ethan.
February 15, 200916 yr Ethan, 'Labour Of Love II' by UB40, was not a Chart Topping Album in 1993. It reached No.3 in 1989. Their last Top 3 Album was 'Promises & Lies' - No.1 in 1993.
