I find it hard to believe that BBC 2 programmes (University Challenge & Masterchef), and Channel 4`s "Grand Designs" are so high...Why? Has life become so tedious, that we have to watch this stuff? University Challenge maybe, yeah...but the other two? Even the original University Challenge ITV shows, with Bamber "Your Starter For Ten" Gascoigne, couldn`t get this high!

Take a look at the tv, in our Flashback year of 1978:

w/k ending 11th March 1978

01 A SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH 17.80M

02 MIND YOUR LANGUAGE 17.50M

18 ARMCHAIR THRILLER (THURS) 14.90M

19 THIS IS YOUR LIFE 14.90M

20 WILDE ALLIANCE 14.80M

Look at those big ratings...and no wonder, they were all top shows. We only had to suffer CORONATION STREET on Mondays, and Wednesdays...and EMMERDALE FARM was only on Tuesdays, and Thursdays! situation comedy ruled...with DAVID JASON doing a Frank Spencer type called "Peter" in A SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH...a vehicle for JASON where he showed his true and only comic talent. MIND YOUR LANGUAGE starred the late BARRY EVANS as a teacher of Foreign Students. MIXED BLESSINGS was a sitcom, where White man marries Black woman. GEORGE AND MILDRED (of course), the spin-off of MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE with the landlords "The Ropers" moving to a posh conservative estate. Cops with Starsky And Hutch (BBC`s top American Series). DAVE ALLEN was delivering his brilliant humour on ITV. MIKE YARWOOD did his amazing impressions on BBC. ROBIN`s NEST was the other spin-off from MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE, where RICHARD O` SULLIVAN`s problems really started a la TESSA WYATT. CROSSROADS was suffered at either 5.15pm, or 6.35pm depending which ITV region you were in, 3 days a week! ARMCHAIR THRILLER gave us the willies, on Tuesday and Thursday at 8.30pm on ITV. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS was on it`s last legs with HUGHIE GREENE...Anyone rememember the "Frank Jennings Syndicate?"....They were on the show, and occasionally pop up in pubs in the South of England. THIS IS YPUR LIFE was doing the business, for it`s best host "EAMON ANDREWS". WILDE ALLIANCE was a mystery/crime series, as a husband and wife team solved crimes in York. It starred John Stride and Julia Foster as Rupert and Amy Wilde on Tuesdays in the 9-10pm slot on ITV.

30 20 ALESHA SHOW - ALESHA DIXON

Well ST. PATRICK`s Day looms, as the DUBLINERS crack the top 30 combined albums! As we remember such classics as "Seven Drunken Nights", although they were only allowed to sing about 6! "Black Velvet Band" was the follow up...and another top 15 hit to boot. Things then turned out bad for such songs as "When You Are Young, Never Wed An Old Man". Songs that kept the closing days of the BBC Light Programme going, along with the start of Radio 2. When all is said though, well done to the boys. We all remember the return to the charts in 1987...when they teamed up with the Pogues, and "The Irish Rover". U2 easily beat new entries by Kelly, Taylor, and Annie...all queuing up in front of Faryl "Don`t believe the hype of the press" Smith.

20 20 PASTICHE - MANHATTEN TRANSFER

6 straight weeks at the top for ABBA in 1978. They had knocked off FLEETWOOD MAC in February...but KATE BUSH was messing about, as she knocked ABBA off very quickly...doing a double with album and single. ANDY WILLIAMS could have been the Mother`s Day seller, along with BUDDY HOLLY. LLOYD WEBBER spent many a week at number 3, then fell like a brick. ELO gave us "MR BLUE SKY" as a single, this came from the album "Out Of The Blue". DARTS had both a first hit single, and album. ROD STEWART had a top-weight number 2 album, and was up and down for 5 months straight. GERRY RAFFERTY did even better as "City To City", gave him a "Record Business" number one single in April. DAVE CLARK FIVE gave us 25 hits. IAN DURY had been hanging about since October 1977, then rose into the top ten in early 78. DISCO STARS was top comp, a selection of just that, as "HAPPY DAYS" gave us the Fonz, and those "FONZIES FAVOURITES". Suddenly thought of a cartoon series based on the Fonzie character...Remember "HEYYY IT`S THE KING?" A cartoon series that also featured "Undercover Elephant", and 3 ghosts "Shake Rattle And Roll". DONNA SUMMER was dropping, as BLONDIE got an early album, and an early "Record Business" number one single. PASTICHE was what MANHATTEN TRANSFER were all about, and here was the album...in the UK, at the end of 1978 MAN TRAN appeared on the TWO RONNIES new series.

38 41 SOMETIMES WHEN WE TOUCH - DAN HILL

39 29 CLASH CITY ROCKERS - CLASH

40 36 SPREAD YOUR WINGS - QUEEN

KATE BUSH suffered slightly on the Record Business chart, because she only got 3 weeks at the top. Then BLONDIE knocked her off! It got better though because GERRY RAFFERTY kept BRIAN AND MICHAEL off the top! No Lowrie represented at number one there! "Big Ship, Sails On The Alley Alley O, Alley Alley O". WHAT? DARTS did ok with "Come Back My Love", and stalled at number 2...although some dodgy lyrics, "Do The Wop, Do The Wang, Do The Wop", or something similar!! Classier stuff from the quite excellent GWEN DICKEY and ROSE ROYCE. "Wishing On A Star" should have made number one, although it was their biggest hit. ERUPTION (and PRECIOUS WILSON) gave us a couple of re-makes in 1978. "I Can`t Stand The Rain", was a top 30 hit in 1974 for ANN PEEBLES. Also, the song was covered by Miss TINA TURNER. The BEE GEES were STAYIN`ALIVE...Reminding me of a send up type thing by TIM BROOKE TAYLOR in "THE GOODIES" circa 1979! BOB MARLEY was doing good with another top ten hit...His last until his untimely death in 1981. SAMANTHA SANG (along with the BEE GEES, again)...which was certainly the best version of the song, that returned to the chart a few years ago (you know who)!! YELLOW DOG were the boys from FOX, who were KENNY YOUNG and Co. Mainly a comedy hit. EARTH WIND AND FIRE got their first top 15 entry. FREE hit back with an E.P. that included previous hits (unfortunately we had to suffer ALL RIGHT NOW, a third time and it wasn`t over yet, as we found out in 1991). ANDY CAMERON was on the march with Ally`s Tartan Army...and even ROD STEWART couldn`t help Scotland in the disasterous effort in the `78 World Cup! Rod was in this week with the Double A "HOT LEGS/I WAS ONLY JOKING, MY FRIEND"....Funny thing with Rod`s Double A sided hits was the listings...HOT LEGS was played the most, but was not listed as A1 it was listed as A2...This was also the case, with "I Don`t Wanna Talk About It/First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1977, and "Angel/What Made Milwaukee Famous" in 1972...Very strange because in 1972, you simply never heard "What Made Milwaukee Famous", at all...Now you never hear "Angel!" ELKIE BROOKS made wine from the Lilac tree...a clever trick, if you can pull it off! NICK LOWE spent a lot of time, with DAVE EDMUNDS`ROCKPILE, but achieved his first, and biggest solo hit. HOT CHOCOLATE continued to churn, out those hits...which always reminded me of the theme to DAVID MCCALLUM`s "Invisible Man" series. BROTHERHOOD OF MAN went down, down, down...it was nearly over. Not such a bad thing, was "FIGARO" their worst, and one of the worse number ones, of the 70s? DONNA SUMMER was all over the place, and finally sticking to the Casablanca record label. THE STRANGLERS had "FIVE MINUTES", but they were almost there! THE SWEET were at their ends, but "Love Is Like Oxygen" payed off for them. BILLY JOEL had his first hit. TOM ROBINSON gave us his "RISING FREE" E.P...This included the track "GLAD TO BE GAY". Were the BBC going to play that? No way! We were treated to "Don`t Take No For An Answer". GENESIS struck their first top ten single...along with Mr Collins. ELVIS COSTELLO didn`t want to go to Chelsea...he`d seen them play football, too!!!! MANHATTEN TRANSFER took "Walk In Love", into the top 20...which was more class. SCOTT FITZGERALD was robbed at the 1988 Eurovision (some 10 years later). He was beaten by long-faced Celine! But in 1978, he teamed up with YVONNE KEELEY, for a song that was based on a classical piece of music. THE REAL THING were on their last legs, it seemed...No, I was never a fan of the REAL THING. A slightly over-egoed singer, really got my goat! The wonderful RITA COOLIDGE re-worked the BEE GEES 1968 number 12 hit, into the top 30. Ever heard Rita`s version of "Only You", the Yazoo/Flying Pickets hit? I believe she was one of the first, to cut it. THE JAM did "NEWS OF THE WORLD"...this was also the title of a 1982 hit for ELO...although a different song! PAPER LACE joined up with Nottingham Forest F.C. Strangely, a big hit in Holland in 1979! PAPER LACE themselves did very well in 1974 (after winning Opportunity Knocks), with 3 top 20 hits, and numerous other misses, including a version of "Hitchin`A Ride"....a 1970 hit for VANITY FARE. More class with PLAYER, and "Baby Come Back"...No not that one! TONIGHT told us about "The Drummer Man", not forgetting the Majorette. The ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION (star of certain dodgy films), could not follow up "More More More", the 1976 number 5 hit. DAN HILL kept trying (Canadian`s, never give up)...and he finally got a top 20 hit with the smoochy "Sometime`s When We Touch". When did you last, or ever hear the tracks by the CLASH, and QUEEN? All this kept us listening to the radio in March 1978...as TOM BROWNE quit the Radio One "Top Twenty Show"....with SIMON BATES taking over on the 2nd Apr 78. Was this a coincidence, that Independant Radio launched into the UK Top 30 on Capital Radio at 2pm on Sundays?...A show that was broadcast by different presenters on various other Independant Stations. These included Nicky Horne, Pete Drummond, and Timmy Mallet...while PETER YOUNG brought us the Capital Countdown on Saturday Mornings, on Capital from 9-12pm, featuring the top 40 best sellers on the London chart...disappearing in 1982, and returning in 1984 (as part of Pick Of The Pops-Take Two, with Alan Freeman of course).

Wow, COMIC RELIEF sell more physicals than anyone this week...a wapping 5,000 sells altogether more than the dreaded FLO RIDA, who hasn`t yet been released physically. Will he return to the top, next week...or will the PET SHOP BOYS unseat those high riders? I could`ve listed the full top 60 along the way there...so outside the 50, it reads 51 AKON - RIGHT NOW, 52 MILEY CYRUS, 53 ENRIQUE/CIARA, 54 TAYLOR SWIFT - WHITE HORSE, 55 U2, 56 TING TINGS - THAT`S NOT MY NAME, 57 JENNIFER HUDSON - IF THIS ISN`T LOVE, 58 PETE DOHERTY, 59 T.I./RIHANNA - LIVE YOUR LIFE, 60 GIRLS ALOUD - THE PROMISE. In the top 70 lurks, DOMAN AND GOODING - RUNNIN`, LADYHAWKE drops to 61, NE-YO - MAD to 62, FRANKI VALLI/FOUR SEASONS to 63...and ANNIE LENNOX re-enters the top 75 with "Walking On Broken Glass", which was originally a top ten hit in the Summer of 1992.

NOTE: These are not the Official Charts. They are based on Chart Show tv`s charts, but with added sales to bring it up to date. Which make`s it the most up to date chart, at this point.

That retro commentary is a bit of a mouthful this week  must take you ages in writing it up, not 'arf, chart pickers ;)

It started out quite short...then my head filled with more thoughts! A bit of a landmark in 1978, kind of made the BBC and the compilers (The British Market Research Bureau) think, because of the other chart body of Record Business...who compiled a top 120!

The sats are only 3 in physicals in comic relief week! :o that aint good.

So far. They may well still overtake Oasis by Sunday's chart following their performance on CIN tonight (although they're going to have to go some tomorrow to do it!).

Cheers Dave!

So where will the Comic Relief single be on Hit40UK on Sunday, will it even chart (given that download bundles don't count to the download chart and it will have next to zilch airplay!)

It's not bad since the actual Comic Relief single is at number one. They should both sell well tomorrow.

Thanks as ever Dave  The PSBs pre-orders are amazing and i would love them to be number one next week- but it's not going to... Is it?

Oasis have proved this week that if you have a strong enough fan base (and a decent physical tracklisting/package), you can still guarantee a Top 10 hit in the download era. Low Top 10 is very possible I'd have thought, though they will need to do 20K+

05 03 ONLY BY THE NIGHT - KOL

I don't think this will ever die, because major releases normally only stay ahead of it for one week. This could climb back ahead of at least Annie Lennox next week. But idk. :P

Anyhoo, disappointing Flo is no longer #1, but I hope he can get it back next week. Or any week really. Great to see Oasis and September so high, and I hope Coldplay can stay around in the top 75 for another forever. Must be close to top 20 longest stays in the top 75 for singles, I think #20 is on 41 weeks (Scouting for Girls - She's So Lovely) and this is Coldplay's 39th week...

Guarantee except for I'm Outta Time. ;)

Its around about #25 on "Digital Tracks" only, so I'd imagine it'll be doing well to sneak into the top 40 on Hit 40 UK once the airplay component is added (which will boost almost all the songs around it).

Yeah! I doubt it will even be in that chart! How they going to explain that? Proving further that the airplay factor on Independant Radio is garbage! :puke2:

They will manipulate it again  Poker Face no way was in the top 10 two weeks ago including airplay. It was scraping it last week (no. 11 on the Bullboard chart).

I had a sneaking look at pre-order physicals combined with the physical chart earlier. The Pet Shop Boys (if they were available now), are ahead of Oasis, but behind Comic Relief...that tells us that they would reside in the combined top 7. Could be good news, soon! With the highest new entry, next week!

Excellent stuff Dave! :)

I hope Annie Lennox's Shining Light can hold on in the top40!

Wow, that's really cool. It does depend how it does on downloads of course but maybe as Oasis show, it's not that important... (Quite surprised TBH).
