March 18, 200917 yr EXACTLY my point. I'm confused about people being "surprised" etc by the position of PSB.If sales data is missing then i'm the one thats surprised! This is the first single they have released into the single market with it current nature ie the physical is basically Dead - the few shops that EVEN still sell them (in the least prominent position) only ever stock a token amount UNLESS they have absolute certainty there will be an exceptional demand for one record (eg X factor winner etc). Considering how long ago PSB last had a huge smash cross over hit + the degree to which this song hasn't reached the general Public so far ( limited airplay - just Radio 2 to any degree) and negligible video exposure (eg youtube viewings much less than U2s latest for example) i can't see the shops stocking "Love etc" significantly regardless of its perceived quality (+ Parlo has no (final) say in the matter its up to the shops) - BECAUSE its downloads that MATTER now - thats were the general public sales have now shifted to/come from - thats were the market is targetted + biased toward - if an older generation who don't download (the singles market has always been driven more by the younger generation generally) is creating demand bigger than supply of a "regular physical" (we R talking about only a few thousand copies i think that is the range of highest selling physical records in a week) its still going to be dwarfed by downloads ( around 20K to get into top10 now ?) its "missing" which would contribute by far the majority to its chart position - ordering just a few more thousand physical copies which could meet the extra demand might not be worth it for retail. Thing is, although you are obviously right about the death of the physical single, PSB are one of the few exceptions to the rule because fans, mostly being of a more mature age, still very much enjoy owning a CD single and many are collectors. For a start, PSB b-sides are famous for their high quality so the fanbase will always look to buy a PSB single, even if they already have the main track on the album. And in this case, there's a b-side that isn't available to download so there was always going to be a reasonable demand for the CD single. The fact is, Love Etc has been woefully stocked and fans all around the country have been unable to buy CD1 so far. I went to three London branches of HMV on Monday and CD1 was sold out by midday! I've still yet to find it so I ended up ordering it and the guy who served me said it may not be delivered until next week. While I accept that there is far less of an incentive for HMV to stock a CD single nowadays, demand has outweighed supply quite significantly on this occasion and it's pathetic that the main CD was out of stock in large parts of the UK so quickly. And it's particularly frustrating because the song, if it was well stocked, would have an outside chance of charting inside the top 10. Now, it may miss the top 20, which would be a great shame. At least it appears to be holding its own in the iTunes chart at the moment.
March 18, 200917 yr So happy that La Roux is getting the recognition she deserves, In For The Kill is great.
March 18, 200917 yr although people say the cd single is dying out i dis agree on some levels, one of the problems with cd singles nowadays is they are simply not available and in many cases people assume they cant get the cd single and simply opt for a download, likewise record companies have not fought for the survival of the cd single which does not help the cause,in many cases which the latest pet shop boys single proves supply is not meeting demand, from the record company point of view they no in some cases that there is demand so they charge higher prices, higher prices are putting the casual cd single buyer of purchasing but for the die hard fans thet know they will pay the prices. I firmly believe in many cases the release of a cd 2 cd format works and those who are fans of certain artists will buy both formats and a vinyl if available,of the top of my head acts like pet shops boys, kylie, madonna, girls aloud have fans who would love all formats and would buy all for a collection purpose alone, What the record company also fail to realise is the lack of cd singles puts many of going to record shops,i know my local cd shop where i know the propriotor very well was telling me the lack of cd singles has killed his trade as he found when people popped in to buy a cd single 50% of them ended up buying an album aswell, there fore when one cant get the cd single they pop online download and end up either downloading albums or going to sites like cd wow to buy albums, which inturn is making it harder and harder for retailers to survive,my local cd shop finds it almost impossible to get cd singles now,the very odd ocasion he manages to get the odd cd single, over the last few months i cant count on both my hands the amount of cd singles he has managed to get. I have ended up buying my own cd singles online which in some ways i dont like doing as im in no way benefiting my own economy but instead feeding another economy when clearly the irish econommy is in need of as many irish people keeping their purchases in the country the flip side i like my cd singles and dont really have an option.
