I know that Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" made a return to number one before in 2006, and it now look like Flo Rida's "Right Round" might do that this week. So, I am wondering, how many current/first release (is that the right word?) (at the time) singles and/or what singles made a return to number one? This is NOT counting re-releases.

It is very weird when there wasn't anyone returning to #1 considering loads of songs doing it in the 50s and 60s.

50s and 60s was pretty normal for a track to go back to the top of the chart, it died out after after the 60s quite literally, until 1993 when the odd times happened
I think the reason songs started returning to number one again from the nineties is that was when songs started to enter at No1 more often so it became possible to knock off a single with pretty much sales from a fanbase but not possible to stay there for 2 weeks.

ha, I do remember Don't Stop Movin' reclimbing over the terrible 'It's Raining Men' which I was very pleased about! Call On Me climbed back to No.1 on a sale of about 22k which was ridiculous...Hips Don't Lie's climb back to the top was more surprising as it had spent a few weeks off No.1 and then returned for a full month...very bizarre chart run that song had...

Between 1969 and 1993, there were no n.º1's returning back after they dropped. The Blobby restarted the trend.

Run interrupted by Take That’s third No1 to enter at the top Babe.

24 | 06.07.1996 | Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds | Three Lions

1-2-2-4-2-1-3-6-10-

Returned to No1 on a wave of football hysteria in the build up to England’s home semi final at Euro 96.

25 | 13.07.1996 | Fugees | Killing Me Softly

1-1-1-1-2-1-2-2-2-6-7-

1-1-1-2-1-1-1-2-3-4-6-5-

27 | 10.01.1998 | Various Artists | Perfect Day

1-1-2-2-3-3-1-4-10-

The Teletubies and then the Spice Girls pushed Perfect Day down but it's sales held up better in the post Christmas sales slump.

1-2-2-1-3-2-2-2-3-4-10-

Cornershop's Brimful Of Asha and Madonna's Frozen jumped to the top with sales of around 200k but the Titanic song proved too strong for Natalie Imbruglia. It almost interrupted Run DMC's run too the week of the Oscars.

29 | 23.05.1998 | All Saints | Under The Bridge / Lady Marmalade

1-2-1-2-5-10-

Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman and Gordon Haskell overtook Daniel's garage dance anthem but collapsed to 20k in the post chrimbo sales slump leaving Gotta Get Thru this to reclaim the No1 spot with a then all-time low of 25k.

32 | 23.10.2004 | Eric Prydz | Call On Me

1-1-1-2-1-1-2-8-8-

Robbie Williams' Radio could only last a week at No1 allowing Eric Prydz to set new lows for a No1 of 24k then 22k.

33 | 05.08.2006 | Shakira ft. Wyclef Jean Hips Don't Lie

(54)-3-2-1-2-2-3-1-1-1-1-2-2-5-7-6-10-
