Police warn of G20 protest scale

Source - BBC News

Known activists are planning in an "unprecedented" way ahead of next month's G20 summit in London, the Metropolitan Police have warned.

Cdr Bob Broadhurst, in charge of the policing operation, said anarchists and environmentalists were plotting a series of demonstrations.

Groups active in the late 1990s were re-emerging and forming new alliances to protest at the meeting, he said.

The operation will involve thousands of officers and cost an estimated £7.2m.

World leaders, including US President Barack Obama, will begin to arrive in the UK on 31 March.

"Anarchists by definition won't come and see us"

Cdr Bob Broadhurst

The next day campaigners are expected to target the City of London in a series of anti-globalisation and climate change demonstrations.

As the G20 summit begins on 2 April, protests are also planned at the Excel conference centre in Docklands.

Numbers challenge

Cdr Broadhurst said officers from six forces would be involved in a massive security operation before and during the summit.

G20 LONDON SUMMIT

World leaders will meet next month in London to discuss measures to tackle the downturn. See our in-depth guide to the G20 summit.

The G20 countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the US and the EU.

However, it was difficult to estimate how many protesters would actually turn up on the main day of activity on 1 April.

"Clearly there are some very innovative and clever people and they know our tactics," Cdr Broadhurst said. "They want to stop the City on the Wednesday - that is their avowed intention."

He said it was his aim to "facilitate lawful protest" and he revealed plans for a special demonstration pen near the Excel Centre to accommodate a few hundred protesters.

But while police had worked closely with some campaigners, the plans of other groups were harder to ascertain.

"Anarchists by definition won't come and see us," he said.

'Unhappy bedfellows'

He said there was no intelligence to suggest there was a terrorist attack planned, but there was evidence that groups not seen since the 1990s, such as direct action exponents Reclaim the Streets and the Wombles, were re-forming and planning activity.

Students were also involved in larger numbers than before, he said, and there was some evidence that foreign activists were heading to the UK to take part in the protests.

Police are expecting activists to block streets and hold demonstrations heading in several directions at once.

"Hitting us at the same time for a day, that is the stretch, that is causing the issues, rather than protecting people, which is our core business," said Cdr Broadhurst.

He added: "There will be times when protest comes up against security and they are not always happy bedfellows."

Cdr Broadhurst said police were facing a particular challenge during the G20 because it falls in the same week as a state visit from the president of Mexico, the England football team's games against Slovakia and Ukraine at Wembley and the Boat Race.

Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson admitted policing the summit and protecting the 20 world leaders and 40 delegations was a "huge challenge".

I can only comment using the words of Joe Strummer and Mick Jones....

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

Black man gotta lot a problems

But they don't mind throwing a brick

White people go to school

Where they teach you how to be thick

An' everybody's doing

Just what they're told to

An' nobody wants

To go to jail!

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

All the power's in the hands

Of people rich enough to buy it

While we walk the street

Too chicken to even try it

Everybody's doing

Just what they're told to

Nobody wants

To go to jail!

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

Are you taking over

or are you taking orders?

Are you going backwards

Or are you going forwards?

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

White riot - I wanna riot

White riot - a riot of my own

If I lived in London, I'd be there. I wonder if it will get as crazy as Battle of Seattle 1999...

While I am going to sound like a fascist here i don't think the demonstrations should be allowed to go ahead

1) What is going to happen is going to make the poll tax riots seem like a tea party when it is hijacked by anarchists, communists and Class War etc

2) With the fact pretty much the whole of London policing is going to be focused on that event it is the perfect day for armed robbers, muggers, terrorists etc to do their stuff in areas where police will have been diverted from to police the G20

I believe in the right to protest and the right to demonstrate but it should be peaceful and this isn't going to be

You said it mate....

Sorry, but I could not disagree with you more..... If violence does happen, it's an inevitable symptom of the fact that our leaders have failed us, failed to protect us, failed to punish those responsible for the abuses of the system and failed to prevent ordinary people from losing jobs, their homes, their savings.. If you cannot see that people have a right to be angry and a right to go out on the streets and vent that anger in whatever way they see fit, then you are a fool who simply doesn't see what the real picture is....

This is a MUCH bigger deal than the Poll Tax, and a much greater reason to go out and protest, perhaps an even bigger reason than the Iraq War.... The Poll Tax, and even Black Wednesday doesn't begin to compare to what has occurred...... I'll be out on the streets for one main reason - The fact that I work in the education system, and I am seeing simply little no future for the disabled students whom I am supporting and helping pass their degrees, this so-called "government" and people like Fred the Shred have betrayed all of us, but they have betrayed the YOUNG most of all..... And it's an even bigger betrayal than Thatcher's..... I feel that I would be derelict in my duty if I were to just stay at home and let this pass without venting my feelings to the likes of Broon and Darling.....

i am very very very glad that i won't be in the UK for this event.

But i do support the protesters and i would condone the use of a little violence if only to make a point. Not a full blown riot likes, although i'm starting to think that a full blown riot with deaths wouldn't even make the government take notice

If only we could get a suicide bomber to do their dirty work at the G20 summit itself then maybe they'll notice

Protests are fine if they are aimed at the RIGHT peeople

Want to protest outside Fred Goodwin's house ? great, I would probably throw eggs at the c**t too, protest outside the house of the chairmen of Northern Rock and Lloyds TSB and AIG ? great, well deserved

But these protests will target INNOCENT people so they should not be punished or affected or beaten up simply because they happen to have worked for the same company as Fred Goodwin for example, I have no doubt at all that that Class War/Socialist Worker brigade are going to target financial institutions and attack bank workers etc, indeed even banks in the City have been issuing advice to workers not to wear suits during the protest days as they are likely to be attacked and not to have any items that may identify them as working for banks, that to me is unacceptable, I dont see why clerks, IT support people, admin staff and so on should have to pay the price for the crimes of the likes of Goodwin thats why I am against the protests

Protesting and attacking the City and attacking banks etc is going to affect innocent people

The aim is to cause disruption.. No one is talking about deliberately targeting innocent support staff, that is just pure Tabloid scaremongering guff, well done for falling for it mate.... The targets are obvious - Broon, Darling, being the main ones, but other G20 leaders are in the running as well.... I see nothing wrong in targeting the buildings either tbh....

If people are legitimately concerned, then all they need do is call in sick that day (in fact, this is one of the methods that the likes of Class War and Socialist Worker are actually advocating people in that sector do)... The more people who do that, the greater the disruption caused, the financial institutions wont be able to function effectively, and then the ends would be met through non-violent means....

The actual deliberate violence itself is being reserved for the more legit targets, the Goodwins, the Lord Myners, the leaders, etc....

It wouldn't surprise me at all if there was some terrorist attack next week, I say terrorist, heck it would surprise me left if an attack was carried out by a british citizen.

i thought this was about the economy etc not f***ing climate change.

Bloody environmentalists should be thrown into Mt Etna so we can get on with our lives without being accused of murdering the planet and some small creature noone has ever heard of and only exists on a tiny island in the indian ocean and has now become extinct because the locals got hungry.

Tbh there is severe danger to society aswell as endangered species. I'm not gonna go through it again because i did a nasty piece of coursework on it  (which doesn't make it correct of course)

I fear for my safety on Weds :(

It aint YOU that's the target mate..... It's the politicians, the banks, city fat cats....

An ordinary person has NOTHING to fear from the protestors.....

The issues are all related....

I mean, what's the point in us having a "great economy" if it comes at the expense of us eventually destroying our own planet....?

Is it not just a little bit like taking a $h!t in the middle of your own living room and then leaving it.....?

They have though, when all this ragbag army of new age travellers, assorted anarchists, rent a mob troublemakers, dole scroungers, tree huggers, and swampy types start smashing up the area and the police go wading in with their batons then innocents are going to get hit as well

Exactly Phil

When Brands Hatch motor racing circuit made plans to create the most advanced circuit in motor racing facilities wise that would have created roughly 2000 jobs these tree hugging lentil eaters campaigned and blockaded and everything and finally got the plan thrown out, why did they do this ?

Because of a rare type of fukkin SNAIL that they said would be endangered if the plans went ahead

A fukkin snail took priority over getting 2000 people into work

Environmentalists/tree huggers/swampy type are a pet hate of mine

And, the innocents will more likely be battered down by the Pigs than by the protestors mate.....

The ordinay rank-and-file PCs should be JOINING us in going after the heads of top bankers, MPs, city types, not trying to stop us, because, if the ordinary copper stopped to think, he/she would realise that they're just as fukked as the rest of us thanks to these c/unts.....

In fact, if the Filth actually had DONE their job and ARRESTED maggots like Fred Goodwin, there wouldn't even BE the necessity for us to take to the streets and do it ourselves..... <_<

He said it was his aim to "facilitate lawful protest" and he revealed plans for a special demonstration pen near the Excel Centre to accommodate a few hundred protesters.

See, to me, this just reads like they are trying to limit the demonstration to just a small handful of people. As if this special demonstration pen is going to be able to hold everyone who wants to protest! That is why this scheme will not work.
