"This provocation underscores the need for action - not just this afternoon at the UN Security Council, but in our determination to prevent the spread of these weapons. Rules must be binding," said Mr. Obama. "Violations must be punished. Words must mean something. The world must stand together to prevent the spread of these weapons."

Here's a section, "violations must be punished", go on, I DARE you to try and punish North Korea.

"Today I state clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons!" said Mr. Obama.

Another section, a "world without nuclear weapons". I'd like to see that happen.

He needs to get realistic, and needs to start to get a grip. His speeches are long and well thought out and explained, he's a great speaker, fact, but they never actually deliver anything worth listening to.

+ Lastly, it hasn't even been proven that it was a nuclear weapon that was used, so it's a bit risky for Obama jumping into conclusions like that..

If there's ever another world war, I guarantee it'll be over Korea. China/Russia/North vs South/US. Though I think this could only happen if the north attack the south, which they will not do anytime soon at all. North Korea know they could cause significant damage to Seoul [you can see North Korea from there - never mind missiles that travel as far as Alaska. Atm if this were to ever happen, over a million people would be dead/injured within 24 hours,] but in terms of a retaliation, it'd be torn to bits. The leaders act very high and mighty, but the highest of the high officials know they'd stand 0 chance. They can excerise their muscle all they wish, but tbh I think it's for bragging rights that they can report to the general population, who think their army is the greatest because it "marches in perfect sync" LOL.

Back on topic - it was reported by Northern news agencies that the missile was "flying around the world, playing eternal revolutionary music dedicated to Kim Jong-il." I think that's enough said about this threat tbh

I heard it was summat to do with North Korea's bloody Space program.....

It's so typical for the US to sabre-rattle though, it's probably what the NK regime wanted to test, to see if this guy was any better than the previous occupant of the White House... Obama's rhetoric without any real evidence that NK's action was actually aggressive has proven that there is scant difference between the old and the new.....

As Mick Jagger once said - "Meet the new boss, same as the old..."

some thing i noticed tagged on the end of that article:

However, President Sarkozy struck a sour note by criticising his US counterpart’s call for the European Union to expand to include Turkey. “It is up to the European Union to decide,” the French leader said.

Since when was it the USA's decision as to who joined the European Union? Last time i checked they weren't in the EU and therefore had no say in the EU.

If the EU wants Turkey in, then it will be for the benefit of the EU as a whole not because Obama wants to use Turkey as a base incase they decide they are bored with Afganistan and want to invade Iran.

The White House should stay out of European politics, we have enough problems without the Americans sticking their nose in where it isn't required or wanted.

Agreed....

Frankly, I'm incredibly dubious about Turkey joining the EU.... Yes, they do seem to be a fairly progressive and fair-minded Islamic State, but on the other hand, their oppression of their Kurdish population has led to much trouble over the years, with the Kurds reactively striking back with guerilla and terror attacks....

Either way, it's a European decision for Europe to decide... The opinions of America are not welcome, especially given that, as you say, it may be an attempt to butter up the Turks so they'll let the Yanks use Turkey as a springboard to attack Iran....

Pesonally i see Turkey as an Asian country rather than a European county given that the majority of Turkey is technically in Asia.

I think they have made some steps in the right direction, but it's not far enough yet. As you said, the Kurds issue is still present, and allowing them into the EU could potentially spread the issue across Mainland Europe, i'm pretty sure there are Kurdish refugees in places like Germany and France. Even the UK.

If the EU expands i would prefer to see places like Georgia become members, people who would benefit from EU membership. If Russia is still eyeing Georgia, having the backing of the EU would help it remain a independent state. But then again that would annoy the American's because they didn't condemn Russia's actions for other reasons so naturally the UK wold nvote against it because we like to keep the US happy.

We need a PM like the French President, someone who is quite happy to speak his mind and tell the US to get fukked when they are interfering in something that doesn't concern them.

I think everyone needs a PM like the French (or heck even the Australian one, I don't agree with many of his views but he speaks alot of what people are saying inside their homes).

Oooh K Rudd would be awesome as a PM.

i know he currently is mine, but i'm still a UK resident officially

This is a French tradition, dating back to de Gaulle. The French were bold enough to tell the US to get fukked just a few years after the Normandy invasion! It helped a lot to rebuild the French state's strength and independence, but didn't earn them many friends on this side of the Atlantic

The row over the new head of NATO really worried me. Turkey initially tried to block the Danish man's appointment because of Denmark's refusal to ban the Mohammed cartoon a few years back. It showed that there is still a tremendous divide in terms of attitudes and beliefs in the areas of religion, press freedom, etc.

But they eventually did let him in, so that shows maturity. To be honest, I'm not sure why the US would want Turkey in the EU (they're already in NATO which makes them a useful military ally). Maybe because the inclusion of Turkey would weaken the EU's economy?

Hmmm, never thought about that one....

That could be another reason why the US (through the UK...) was so keen on getting countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia into the EU as well....

That would be the reason for all the Anti-French stuff generally in US popular culture then.....

France has a lot of things wrong with it, but in some ways, I really would like it if we in the UK were a bit more like the French and a lot less like the Americans.... No offence to you mate, you're one of the better examples of your countrymen.....

Yeah and quickly get them all in the Eurozone so its value drops and the US dollar regains status as the premier world currency!

None taken of course!

While I actually don't like the film Love Actually (which is surely a crime in the UK ), the scene where Hugh Grant stands up to the US president strikes such a chord because... imagine if Tony Blair had made a powerful speech condemning the Iraq war, condemning torture, condemning illegal interrogation and disregarding the Geneva Convention and all the atrocities of the Bush administration. I really think it would have made a difference. Americans really respect Britons and I really think Bush got away with much of what he did because it was perceived that the older, wiser brother (so to speak) was on board with all of it.

Blair and Brown were Bush's little lapdogs.

They wouldn't have the balls to stand up to a fly never mind the US president.

They're also China and Russia's lapdogs as well these days.....

Theres so many i can't keep up

Why can't we have a leader that will carve his own path instead of bowing to others

Like France or Australia

Surely Turkey in Nato would be enough?

I know Gordon Brown gets criticized a lot, but he truly does deserve it. He's like a slug. And Tony Blair, all smiles and charming charisma, that's not what we need. We need someone bold, who can stand on their own two feet and not get pushed around by the Americans. If Obama was to say, "Okay, lets go to war with North Korea", I bet anyone that we'd be first to side with the US..
