Lady GaGa does the double in a subdued week of chart activity.

T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake Dead And Gone slides three to No10 58-47-30-17-4-6-7-6-7-10- in it’s sixth week inside the top ten; Akon slides a place to No9 60-56-xx-xx-xx-66-59-53-52-56-54-56-30-13-9-8-8-9- with Colby O’Donis and Kardinal Offishall on Beautiful; Taylor Swift’s massive country crossover Love Story slides a further two places to No8 22-2-5-5-5-6-8-; La Roux climb four places to No7 with In For The Kill after two weeks at No11 11-11-7-; and Metro Station’s Shake It gains three places to No6.

Into the top five: Beyoncé’s Halo slides a place to No5 40-20-9-4-5- despite gaining sales momentum; Flo Rida’s former No1 Right Round featuring Ke$ha dips one to No4 1-2-2-3-4-, in its fifth week on the chart; AR Rahman & The Pussycat Doll’s Jai Ho! (You’re My Destiny) climbs another two places to No3 20-5-3-; Noisettes’ Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go) holds where it entered last week at No2; meaning that for a third consecutive week Lady GaGa is No1 with Poker Face.

01 01 Lady GaGa Poker Face

Name: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta

Age: 23

Location: New York

Nationality: American

Style: electronic pop singer-songwriter

Active Since: 2008

Previous Chart Action: No1: 2 Top5: 0 Top10: 0 Top20: 0 Top40: 0 Top75: 0

Biggest Hit: Just Dance (3-1-1-1-2-2-2-2-6-8-)

2nd single From: The Fame

Chart Run To Date: 30-26-28-24-22-15-3-3-4-1-1-1-

So Lady GaGa scores her second successive three-week No1 with Poker Face following Just Dance in January. The last act to record back to back three-week No1’s was the Spice Girls with 2 Become 1 (December 1996) and Who Do You Think You Are/Mama (March 1997); Leona Lewis is the only act in the last decade to start her career with longer stints at the top with her first two singles: A Moment Like This (4 weeks, December 2006) and Bleeding Love (7 weeks, October 2007). Her debut album The Fame climbs 3-1- on the album chart, thus The Fame is the first album to reach No1 at the same time as a second single No1 since Shaggy’s Hot Shot and Angel topped the chart in June 2001.

Biggest Hit: Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go) (2-2-)

Don’t Upset The Rhythm’s continued use in the Mazda car adverts sees it continue to hold in second place for a second week. The track features on the compilation Now72 out today/tomorrow and looks likely to receive a sales boost next week as a result; whether that’ll be strong enough to make any further progress up the chart is debateable.

Biggest Hit: The Fear (1-1-1-1-5-7-)

2nd Single from: It’s You, Not Me

Chart Run To Date: 16-12-

The singles from Lily Allen’s first album Alright Still (No2 Jul 2006) exhibited the classic law of diminishing returns; Smile reached No1 and was followed by LDN, which reached No6 (Oct 2006); the third and fourth singles were restricted mid-table peaks: Littlest Things (No21, Dec 2006) and Alfie/Shame For You (No15, Feb 2007). Not Fair is shaping up to be a significant hit and on course for a top ten peak, however further releases may struggle to match such consistency.

Just Jack returns with the first single Embers from his forthcoming third studio album All Night Cinema that returns him to the top twenty for only the second time in his career. He released his first studio album The Outer Marker in 2002 on an independent label; it was in 2007 he achieved commercial success after an appearance on Later With Jules Holland performing Starz In Their Eyes, which duly stormed to No2 in January. Overtones his second studio album reached No6 in February and spawned three further singles which struggled to match Starz In Their Eyes’ impressive debut: Glory Days (No32, Apr 2007), Writers Bock (No74, Jun 2007) and No Time (No76 Sep 2007).

NEW 28 Doves Kingdom Of Rust

Biggest Hit: There Goes The Fear (No3 April 2002)

1st single from: Kingdom Of Rust (4th studio album due out today/tomorrow)

Chart Run To Date: 28-

Twins Jez and Andy Williams met Jimi Goodwin at school in 1985. They regularly frequented the legendary Mancunian club The Haçienda, which spurred them on to produce their own dance material under the guise of Sub Sub.

In 1992 the underground 12” vinyl release Space Face became a seminal classic; April 1993 saw them score their biggest commercial success Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use) which reached No3. Sub Sub’s only full-length album Full Fathom Five was released in September 1994. Unfortunately their recording studio burnt down after the twin’s birthday party in 1995, this lead to them starting afresh adopting a indie sound. A collection of a material meant for Sub Sub’s second album was released retrospectively in 1998.

Their first material as Doves was released in a series of three EP’s between 1998 and 1999: Cedar (Nov 1998), Sea (May 1999) and Here It Comes (No74, Aug 1999). Their first single release was The Cedar Room in March 2000 reaching No33 followed by their debut studio album Lost Souls which reached No14 in April 2000. Further singles from Lost Souls were: Catch The Sun (No32, Jun 2000) and The Man Who Told Everything (No32, Nov 2000).

April 2002 saw their most successful phase with the lead single There Goes The Fear from their second studio album The Last Broadcast reaching No3. A week later The Last Broadcast debuted at No1 and stayed in control for a fortnight; the album produced another two top thirty hits: Pounding (No21, Aug 2002) and Caught By The River (No29, Oct 2002).

The Doves’ returned in early 2005 with their third studio album Some Cities; the lead single, Black And White Town, reached No6 in February 2005; which entered at No1 but slumped 1-14- the next week. The next singles were: Snowden (No17 May 2005) and Sky Starts Falling (No45, Sep 2005). Kingdom Of Rust is the lead single and title track from Doves’ fourth studio album that is due out tomorrow.

Chart Run To Date: 35-

As Flo Rida’s second studio album R.O.O.T.S. (Route Of Overcoming The Struggle) enters this week at No5 the cherry pickers send Sugar into the top forty; suggesting that once activated towards the end of May it will be a strong follow up to his No1 hit Right Round.

Sugar uses an interpolation from Italian electronic dance group Eiffel 65’s 1999 No1 Blue (Da Ba Dee), which shifted over a million copies between 1999 and 2000. Wynter Gordon aka Diana Gordon is an American singer-songwriter specialising in rhythm and blues.

NEW 38 Lady Sovereign So Human

Name: Louise Amanda Harman

Age: 23

Location: Wembley, London

Nationality: British

Biggest Hit: Nine2Five (vs. Ordinary Boys, No6, Jun 2006)

2nd single from: Jigsaw (2nd Studio album due out 13/04/09)

Chart Run To Date: 38-

So Human is the second single from Lady Sovereign’s second studio album due out a week on Monday; following I Got You Dancing which was given away for free at the end of last year, produced by Dr Luke. Dr Luke oversees the interpolation of The Cure’s Close To Me on So Human, which reached No24 in September 1985 and No13 upon its re-release in 1990.

Lady Sovereign’s debut album Public Warning peaked at No80 in November 2006. The biggest hit of her career to date remains the duet with The Ordinary Boys; a reworking of her 2005 No33 hit 9 to 5, renamed Nine2Five; reaching No6 in May 2006, in the wake of Preston’s appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. Her only other appearance in the top forty came in 2006 when Love Me Or Hate Me reached No26.

Albums

In its twelfth week of chart action Lady GaGa’s debut album climbs two places to No1 3-4-4-5-13-7-5-4-8-7-3-1-; claiming only the second singles and albums double of 2009, Lily Allen managed the feat in February. Kings Of Leon’s Only By The Night holds doggedly at No2 1-1-2-3-3-4-6-4-6-7-5-4-3-3-2-1-2-2-3-2-2-1-2-3-4-3-2-2-, now in it’s 28th successive week inside the top7. The top three is completed by Annie Lennox’s The Collection, which rebounds two places to No3 2-2-5-3-, fuelled by her concert on BBC One sessions.

Ronan Keating could not extend his run at the top past both the years and his solo best run of two consecutive weeks at No1; instead he slides three places to No4 1-1-4- with Songs For My Mother. Flo Rida scores the highest new entry of the week with his second studio album R.O.O.T.S. (Route Of Overcoming The Struggle) at No5. R.O.O.T.S. boasts a host of interpolations including You Spin Me Around (Dead Or Alive), Blue (Eiffel 65) and Satisfaction (Benny Benassi). R.O.O.T.S. easily outpaces his debut album Mail On Sunday, which peaked at No29 last April.

Lily Allen’s second studio album It’s You Not Me holds steady at No6 1-2-3-5-10-16-6-6-; Akon’s Freedom reaches a new peak by climbing a place to No7 31-38-36-36-31-21-23-24-24-30-36-40-42-23-18-24-8-7-; The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die slips a place to No8 1-2-7-12-7-8-; James Morrison climbs four places to No9 with the No3 album Songs For You Truths For Me 3-5-9-19-31-39-45-56-64-54-48-29-30-24-7-4-5-5-7-5-13-16-19-20-18-13-9-; Beyoncé’s No7 I Am… Sasha Fierce leaps six places to No10 10-21-23-24-9-8-9-10-8-7-7-9-12-12-11-11-15-19-16-10- after a seven-week hiatus.

Next Week

On the singles chart look out for the Now effect as tracks from Now 72 are cherry picked individually. Lady GaGa will be looking to make it a fourth consecutive week at No1 with Poker Face; however there are some big new digital releases from Calvin Harris (I’m Not Alone) and Ciara Feat. Justin Timberlake (Love, Sex, Magic), which could give her a run for her money.

Physical singles out today/tomorrow include: The Liverpool Collective, Franz Ferdinand, Depeche Mode, Lady Sovereign, Faithless, Bat For Lashes, Fightstar, Ercola, Fleet Foxes, Oceanlab, The Rifles and Art Brut.

On the album chart can Mancunian rockers Doves score a third successive No1 album with Kingdom Of Rust? Eoghan Quigg will need a sizable splash with his eponymous debut album to avoid suffering a similar fate to the 2007 seasons contestants Leon Jackson and Same Difference.
