Posted April 8, 200916 yr It`s Good Friday! A Public Holiday in Britain, but it doesn`t stop the usual bunch of charts. As we take a look at the top films, dvds, tv, albums, the flashback, and then back as ever for the up to minute top selling singles in the UK, this week. Here are the top films: Compiled by Screen International for UK Box Office w/k ending 15th Apr 2009 01 NE MONSTERS VS ALIENS 02 NE THE BOAT THAT ROCKED 03 01 KNOWING 04 02 MARLEY AND ME 05 03 HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 06 04 PAUL BLART: MALL COP 07 05 DAMNED UTD 08 06 DUPLICITY 09 07 GRAN TORINO 10 09 WATCHMEN MONSTERS VS ALIENS nets £4,345,711, and THE BOAT THAT ROCKED £1,804,773...telling us once again, if you can remember the 60s, you weren`t there! I certainly remember them, and I definately wasn`t there man! ;) The top dvds: Compiled by DTR (Based on Sales and Rentals) 01 NE TWILIGHT 02 NE MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE TO AFRICA 03 01 QUANTUM OF SOLACE 04 02 BODY OF LIES 05 03 THE CHANGELING 06 NE TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER 07 04 THE DUCHESS 08 05 LAKEVIEW TERRACE 09 06 ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO 10 07 EAGLE EYE I notice that MAMMA MIA, and THE DARK KNIGHT are resurgng outside the top ten on the dvds. Do we really watch Primeval for the top notch/underplayed plots?! Aren`t they rather repetitive?! Personally it`s probably because of that kind of will they/won`t they bit between 2 certain characters. On Robin Hood, much prefer the 1984 ITV series. It had that classic CLANNAD theme "Robin The Hooded Man". THE BILL is still gaining viewers, up 0.39m this week. HOLLOWAY drops quickly...Not as good as Cell Block H, ay?! Who remember`s the "original" prison drama "Within These Walls?" Obviously Australia nicked it for "Prisoner". As when "Within" finished (it ran from 1974-78), Australia immediately launched "Prisoner" (1979-86). Actually Australia were very quick to launch their own versions of popular British series...i.e. In 1977, they ran "Father Dear Father", 1979 they did "Doctor Down Under", 1980 saw "Love Thy Neighbour", 1986 saw their version of "Bless This House" (they called their version "Home Sweet Home". Also in 1986 (after Michael Grade ruined BBC TV), Australia did their own series with both THE TWO RONNIES, and DAVE ALLEN. We never saw those series in the UK. Shame on Grade! :puke2: Here are this week`s top albums: Based on sales from Thurs to Weds (new entries which drop off in sales as the week progresses are adjusted accordingly) w/k ending 15th Apr 2009 01 NE NOW 72 - VARIOUS 02 NE KINGDOM OF RUST - DOVES 03 01 THE FAME - LADY GAGA 04 NE TWO SUNS - BAT FOR LASHES 05 02 ONLY BY THE NIGHT - KOL 06 03 CLUBLAND CLASSIX VOL. 2 - VARIOUS 07 NE IT`S BLITZ - YEAH YEAH YEAHS 08 06 ANNIE LENNOX COLLECTION - ANNIE LENNOX 09 NE EOGHAN QUINN - EOGHAN QUINN 10 09 IT`S NOT YOU IT`S ME - LILY ALLEN 11 NE PUMP UP THE JAM - VARIOUS 12 07 DAVE PEARCE TRANCE ANTHEMS 09 - VARIOUS 13 08 FREEDOM - AKON 14 22 FLEET FOXES - FLEET FOXES 15 04 SONGS FOR MY MOTHER - RONAN 16 14 I AM SASHA FIERCE - BEYONCE 17 11 POP PRINCESSES 2 - VARIOUS 18 12 SONGS FOR YOU TRUTHS FOR ME - JAMES MORRISON 19 10 INVADERS MUST DIE - PRODIGY 20 23 THE BOAT THAT ROCKED - OST/VARIOUS 21 16 FEARLESS - TAYLOR SWIFT 22 13 ALL I EVER WANTED - KELLY CLARKSON 23 17 SELDOM SEEN KID - ELBOW 24 NE 101 PIRATE RADIO HITS - VARIOUS 25 15 STEET NATION - VARIOUS 26 18 PURE URBAN ESSENTIALS SPRING 09 - VARIOUS 27 05 R.O.O.T.S. - FLO RIDA 28 21 UNDISCOVERED - JAMES MORRISON 29 24 THE CIRCUS - TAKE THAT 30 19 VERY BEST OF EUPHORIC DANCE BREAKDOWN 09 - VARIOUS NOW 72 knocks all artists out, and sells well over 1,00,000 more than Doves! The programme regularly pulled in viewers until 1988, when it disappeared without warning. Only to ressurected some 8 years later with Bruce Forsyth (at half the length). Leslie`s show was a great long show at an hour ending with a very expensive "Showcase Final". Over in Coronation Street, JACK HOWARTH who played Ken Barlow`s Uncle Albert passed away of a heart attack whilst reading the paper. You might remember THE SKIDS doing a punk song called "ALBERT TATLOCK" in 1979! A big year altogether in CORO, because we also said goodbyes to Elsie Tanner, Bert Tilsley, and Stan Ogden. Not good, because we had already lost regular character Len Fairclough (in controversial circumstances in 1983). In Emmerdale Farm, Jack Sugden was having an affair with auctioneer "Karen Moore". He was actually married to Pat, who was pregnant. CLIVE HORNSBY (who played Jack Sugden), had actually just married HELEN WEIR (Pat) in real life. She had a little boy in real life too, called Thomas. She wanted to use the little boy in the series too, as "Thomas". Yorkshire TV didn`t want to call the boy "Thomas" in the series. There was a big row...then Yorkshire promptly killed "Pat" off in a hit-and-run road accident. CHILD`S PLAY was MICHAEL ASPEL`s Sunday tv quiz (similar to RONNIE CORBETT`s later series "SMALL TALK"). SHROUD FOR A NIGHTINGALE was a tv version of PD JAMES novel, with ROY MARSDEN, JOSS ACKLAND, SHEILA ALLEN, and LIZ FRASER to name but 4! BEAR ISLAND was the film starring DONALD SUTHERLAND, VANESSA REDGRAVE, and RICHARD WIDMARK. JIMMY TARBUCK hosted "LIVE FROM HER MAJESTY`S". This series was unfortunately the one, where we lost TOMMY COOPER, as he collapsed on stage and sadly passed away on 15th April 1984. FRESH FIELDS was the top sitcom (ITV`s answer to TERRY AND JUNE) with JULIA MCKENSIE, and the late ANTON RODGERS. DAVID COLEMAN was host on A QUESTION OF SPORT, as BOB MONKHOUSE did his final series (after 105 editions) of FAMILY FORTUNES. EAMON ADREWS was doing alright with not only THIS IS YOUR LIFE on Weds at 7pm, but also WHAT`S MY LINE on Mons at 7pm! As Friday gave us "THE ZODIAC GAME" with Tom O`Conner, and RUSSELL GRANT...poor ratings on that one! KIT CURRAN RADIO SHOW was an unlikely comic/dramatic series set in (yeah, you guest it) a Radio Station! TV EYE was actually "THIS WEEK" under another name on Thurs 8.30pm ITV. WOGAN took over from PARKINSON on Saturdays at 10pm on BBC1 (Well done Michael...totally agreed about your comments, last week). If memory serves me correctly old Parky, took over from MICHAEL ASPEL on GIVE US A CLUE about this time (which had originally started in Feb 1979, along with ASPEL, were UNA STUBBS, LIONEL BLAIR, and a stand in for LIONEL was ex-GOLDEN SHOT/PALADIUM host, the late NORMAN VAUGHAN (who devised BULLSEYE for JIM BOWEN...still pulling them in on a Sunday at 5pm, on it`s 4th series). TOP OF THE POPS was pulling in 9.5m, but just missed the top 20 at 7.20pm on Thursdays. THE PROFESSIONALS was on it`a last legs...born out of THE NEW AVENGERS (BBC4 Thursdays at 7.40pm), CI5 were doing their best fast car chases, and cimbimg over high walls with Bodie And Doye, taking the place of Gambit And Purdey in the NEW AVENGERS (BODIE AND DOYLE actually featured in a late episode of that programme)...and of course GORDON JACKSON replacing PATRICK MACNEE. Do we want to talk about DALLAS? No, right we won`t! But it finished 2 years later, thank Heavens! :cheer: The top albums in April 1984: 01 08 NOW THAT`S WHAT I CALL MUSIC 2 - VARIOUS 02 01 CAN`T SLOW DOWN - LIONEL RICHIE 03 02 HUMAN`S LIB - HOWARD JONES 04 03 INTO THE GAP - THOMPSON TWINS 05 11 THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON 06 13 COLOUR BY NUMBERS - CULTURE CLUB 07 04 THE SMITHS - THE SMITHS 08 06 ALCHEMY - DIRE STRAITS 09 09 HUMAN RACING - NIK KERSHAW 10 17 LAMENT - ULTRAVOX 11 07 CAFE BLEU - STYLE COUNCIL 12 16 AN INNOCENT MAN - BILLY JOEL 13 10 SPARKLE IN THE RAIN - SIMPLE MINDS 14 14 THE WORKS - QUEEN 15 NE THE ICICLE WORKS - ICICLE WORKS 16 20 UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY - U2 17 15 FUGAZI - MARILLION 18 18 OFF THE WALL - MICHAEL JACKSON 19 19 THE VERY BEST OF MOTOWN LOVE SONGS - VARIOUS 20 NE STREET SOUNDS ELECTRO 3 - VARIOUS NOW 2 beating them off in 1984. The 2nd NOW album of course. Did we realise some 25 years on, we`d be in to album 72? LIONEL RICHIE had had the double for a week, then lost it to NOW 2. HOWARD JONES had been to the top for 2 weeks. THOMPSON TWINS had had 3 weeks at the top. THRILLER was on the rise yet again. CULTURE CLUB went up again, after being #1 in 1983. They had a new single, you see. THE SMITHS peaked at #2...never ever a real #2 from them, and Morrisey the man! ;) This self-titled album was ROUGH TRADE`s biggest selling LP to date. DIRE STRAITS were "Live", on ALCHEMY...this peaked at #3. NIK KERSHAW seemed to be glued to the #9 album for 3 weeks, but he did get higher with it later, after a re-issue of his first flop single "I WON`T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME"...which had sneaked into the top 50 singles in Oct 1983. ULTRAVOX scored a resurgence in popularity, as LAMENT crashed up into the top ten. CAFE BLEU was PAUL WELLER`s first for the new band "THE STYLE COUNCIL". By then Paul, and Co had already had 5 top 20 singles, anyway! BILLY JOEL was up, and down all year. Many in the South of England, will remember the re-use of one of his hits for the new Radio Station "Radio Mercury" later in 1984, as used by one geezer called TIMBO (who did the 9-12 evening slot there. Making ANDY STEWART`s "Donald Where`s Your Trousers" popular again, way before Radio One! SIMPLE MINDS did SPARKLE IN THE RAIN at #1 for one week in early 84, too...now they were up and down again. QUEEN had THE WORKS, but could not dethrone the THOMPSON TWINS in March. MARILLION had looked good with FUGAZI...they got to #4, and dropped rapidly. FUGAZI became the name of a Washington Rock outfit in 1987, we also remember. Up and down again for U2, as Under A Blood Red Sky had been to the top, too in December 1983. ICICLE WORKS were rather snazzy, as we remembered the single "Love Is A Wonderful Colour". As MICHAEL JACKSON was so popular his 1979 LP "Off The Wall" had another resurge up the chart. Other VA Comps around included, STREET SOUNDS ELECTRO 3, and VERY BEST OF MOTOWN LOVE SONGS. The Top Singles in April 1984: 01 01 HELLO - LIONEL RICHIE 02 07 YOU TAKE ME UP - THOMPSON TWINS 03 02 ROBERT DE NERO`S WAITING - BANANARAMA 04 06 PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE - DEPECHE MODE 05 05 PYT (PRETTY YOUNG THING) - MICHAEL JACKSON 06 09 GLAD IT`S ALL OVER - CAPTAIN SENSIBLE 07 12 AGAINST ALL ODDS - PHIL COLLINS 08 08 A LOVE WORTH WAITING FOR - SHAKIN`STEVENS 09 03 IT`S RAINING MEN - WEATHER GIRLS 10 15 LUCKY STAR - MADONNA 11 27 AIN`T NOBODY - RUFUS/CHAKA KHAN 12 04 IT`S A MIRACLE - CULTURE CLUB 13 16 NELSON MANDELA - SPECIAL AKA 14 13 CHERRY OH BABY - UB40 15 10 WHAT DO I DO - PHIL FEARON/GALAXY 16 29 HEAVEN - PSYCHEDELIC FURS 17 11 YOUR LOVE IS KING - SADE 18 14 STREET DANCE - BREAK MACHINE 19 31 BABY YOU`RE DYNAMITE - CLIFF RICHARD 20 21 CATERPILLAR - THE CURE 21 17 JOANNA - KOOL AND THE GANG 22 36 WOOD BEEZ (PRAY LIKE ARETHA FRANKLIN) - SCRITTI POLITTI 23 NE I WANT TO BREAK FREE - QUEEN 24 44 JUST BE GOOD TO ME - SOS BAND 25 NE DANCING GIRLS - NIK KERSHAW 26 19 99 RED BALLOONS - NENA 27 26 BOLERO (THE TORVILLE AND DEAN EP) - RICHARD HARTLEY/MICHAEL REED ORCHESTRA 28 18 WOULDN`T IT BE GOOD - NIK KERSHAW 29 20 JUMP - VAN HALEN 30 46 THAT`S THE WAY I LIKE IT - DEAD OR ALIVE 31 43 SOMEDAY - GAP BAND 32 NE EAT IT - WEIRD AL YANCOVIC 33 38 THE DECIEVER - THE ALARM 34 22 DANCE HALL DAYS - WANG CHUNG 35 24 SWIMMING HORSES - SIOUXIE AND THE BANSHEES 36 NE DON`T TELL ME - BLANCMANGE 37 23 UP THE CATWALK - SIMPLE MINDS 38 25 BORROWED TIME - JOHN LENNON 39 33 ULLO JOHN GOT A NEW MOTOR - ALEXEI SAYLE 40 49 GIVE ME TONIGHT - SHANNON 41 32 RELAX - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD 42 28 AN INNOCENT MAN - BILLY JOEL 43 39 I SCARE MYSELF - THOMAS DOLBY 44 42 I`M FALLING - BLUEBELLS 45 30 TO BE OR NOT TO BE (THE HITLER RAP) - MEL BROOKS 46 34 HIDE AND SEEK - HOWARD JONES 47 NE LOCOMOTION - ORCHESTRAL MANOUEVRES IN THE DARK 48 NE DEADLINE USA - SHALAMAR 49 NE SOULS ON FIRE - TRACIE 50 NE BELIEVIN`IN IT ALL - STEVE LEVINE The 1984 charts were compiled by MRIB. At this point airplay had been added to the top 30 for the first time. Bearing in mind that the NETWORK CHART was just 6 months away. Already the Independant Radio Network were getting ready to upset the Radio One team! Could Richard Skinner keep Radio One, on top? No, he could not (even he defected to Capital Radio)! Infact this week in 1986, as Bruno Brookes took over the Radio One Top 40. Continuing with April 84`s singles as LIONEL held on securely at the top, for the 4th week. THOMPSON TWINS did alright in 2nd place. DEPECHE MODE back this week (as a physical #1), sprightly got their biggest hit with "People Are People". BANANARAMA were quite happy, as was ROBERT DE NIRO! MICHAEL JACKSON cracked the top 5 (a bit surprising, as PYT did not make the GALLUP top ten). CAPTAIN SENSIBLE proved he was alive and well as "GLAD IT`S ALL OVER" hit #6, as a double A with "Damned On 45"...a tribute to his ex-band. PHIL COLLINS crashed in, and scored a MRIB #1 eventually. Independant Radio were not fans of SHAKIN` STEVENS, as he got stuck at #8. Down for those big/fat/black WEATHER GIRLS! GERI HALLIWELL eat your heart out! MADONNA going top ten (again not GALLUP). RUFUS teamed up with CHAKA KHAN for the twice hit "Ain`t Nobody". Reminding me of an old hit "I AIN`T GOT NOBODY"...a well micky taked line "I Ain`t Got No Body, Just A Great Big Head!!" CULTURE CLUB gave a bit of resurgence to a BARRY MANILOW title (although different song). THE SPECIAL AKA wanted to free NELSON MANDELA...eventually they did. UB40 peaked at 13 with CHERRY OH BABY. PHIL FEARON did DANCING TIGHT take 2, more than once! PSYCHEDELIC FURS smashed up with HEAVEN, this again did not get this high on the GALLUP chart. SADE got to#6, and appeared on screen on TOTP as "SLADE", poor girl. BREAK MACHINE went break dancing...have we all bought the Street Dance Album, now? CLIFF RICHARD couldn`t get a GALLUP top 20 hit, but did with MRIB with BABY YOU`RE DYNAMITE. THE CURE got another minor top 20 with the CATERPILLAR. KOOL AND THE GANG did get a credit with a double A on MRIB, with JOANNA, and TONIGHT. SCRITTI POLITTI crashed up singing about the Queen Of Soul. QUEEN wanted to Break Free, thankfully they didn`t...with the highest new entry. The SOS BAND launched in with the original "Just Be Good To Me"...without Norman Cook. NIK KERSHAW had 2 top 30 hits in a week. TORVILLE AND DEAN gave a resurge to RAVEL, as BOLERO shot down the chart. DEAD OR ALIVE got a first hit, as they covered a 1975 KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND hit. The GAP BAND joined up with STEVIE WONDER for SOMEDAY. WEIRD AL YANKOVIC was one in a series of people to poke fun of Mr Michael Jackson...Well done Al! I think he does very well on his own, though! THE ALARM missed the GALLUP top 40, but the DECIEVER got good airplay. BLANCMANCE were back with "Don`t Tell Me". I wonder why they later released an Abba song, though? BORROWED TIME gave the late/lamented JOHN LENNON a top 30 hit, from an earlier LP. Lots of fun with ALEXEI SAYLE (who is that fat bast*rd)! THOMAS DOLBY scared himself, with another minor hit. Forgotten hits for SIOUXIE, SIMPLE MINDS, SHANNON...I definately forget those songs by SHALAMAR, TRACIE (YOUNG, previously of Style Council), and STEVE LEVINE...the one who owns an entertainment company with RICHARD ALLINSON. April 10, 200916 yr Brilliant for Bat for Lashes! Martin will be happy about Daniel! :heehee: Thanks as always, Dave :D
April 10, 200916 yr Weird - I thought "Precious" was a physical #1 back in 2005. :o I wonder how many physicals they sold this week - Morrissey did 7K, so I presume about 4K this week for the Mode!
April 10, 200916 yr Thanks Dave :) Yay, my potential BJSCXVI entry is not top 40 :heehee: Suprised that DM made physical number one, but not PSBs :o

Anyone got the physical Number Ones, March 2005 - Dec 2006, please? Precious peaked at #3 on the then MRIB Chart, and #4 Officially combined Physical/Downloads.
April 10, 200916 yr Author PSBs had 'Islands In The Stream' didn't it? PSB`s had Comic Relief, Saturdays, and T.I. in front of them, physically peaking at #4!

April 10, 200916 yr I'm pleased Bat For Lashes has made the top 40 in the above singles chart, I just hope it does well on Sunday for the track to at least get a week in the chart, its got to be my favourite track of the year so far... for me. Strange though, when I heard it for the first time I did not like it, but the track just grew and grew on me.
April 10, 200916 yr Not a massive hooha, but Girls Aloud look set to just miss out again, which is a shame, but the iTunes sales with Untouchable just reaching Top 30 could be just enough to push them in front of Asher Roth. But, they've got weeks yet...just a point. Thanks Dave :D
