I am loving "Bulletproof" at the moment - by far the strongest of her singles to date. I never really 'got' "In For The Kill" it has to be said.

On that evidence I probably won't be getting the album, but I've bought the single for the remixes! :D

I downloaded the album and got half way through it before deleting. I will never be able to take that voice for any length of time. It's awful. I can't think of a worse voice in pop if I'm honest, right up there witch Chad Kroeger! :puke:

I'm massively disappointed really, I love(d) 'Quicksand' and 'Fascination' but I can't take any more at all. It really is ear-rape!

So far a compare and contrast of reviews for the album v Little Boots - Hands:

News/Music Paper/Site - La Roux v Little Boots

NME 9/10 v 7/10 (1-0 La Roux)

Q Magazine 4 Stars v 2 Stars (2-0)

musicOMH 8/10 v 8/10 (2.5-0.5)

Guardian 3 Stars v 4 Stars (2.5-1.5)

Independent 2 Stars v 4 Stars (2.5-2.5)

Planet Sound (teletext) 6/10 v 7/10 (2.5-3.5)

The Clash 8/10 v 5/10 (3.5-3.5)

The Fly 4 Flies v 1.5 Flies (4.5-3.5)

The Times 3 Stars v 4 Stars (4.5-4.5)

The Word Magazine "Hysteria"-"Dare" (both albums compared to famous Human League albums!) (4.5-5.5)

Drowned In Sound 7/10-7/10 (5-6 Little Boots)

In short the reviews suggest it is too close to call, you pay your money and take your choice. Both albums are largely good albums, but the reviews suggest that neither are album of the year contenders.

From the leakage Cover My Eyes is the best track I've heard. But the bottomline is I think her voice is rather thin & reedy for my personally liking (i.e it does not compare favourably to female front singers of the 1980s pop duos Yazoo (Alison Moyet) or Eurythmics (Annie Lennox), and being a teenager in the 1980s, I've heard this brand of synth pop done before (and better) by the likes of Yazoo, Blancmange, (early) Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Erasure, etc.

I reckon anyone thinking of forking out a tenner for a great, classic electropop album should bypass La Roux and just go for the original.... Yazoo's seminal 'Upstairs at Erics' which kind of bottles the whole of this genre perfectly. It's obvious La Roux themselves have been listening closely.... ;)

From my listening and observations, Little Boots is getting a bit of a raw deal. How about building up and breaking down someone so fast eh? It seems the savvier end of the music buying public are getting tired of being force-fed the "next big thing".

That aside, I think "New In Town" is just too eager to please to the point that I think that track is almost forgettable. I think La Roux, however, is already a cut above and will hopefully prosper rather than being a one-album wonder. "Bulletproof" is a wel-deserved future number one.

I think where Little Boots went wrong was releasing New in Town tbh. Whilst I think it's a good song, it's not that catchy tbh. She'd have been better releasing Remedy from the start imo. Far more commercial and poppy... In for the Kill on the other hand is far more in your face, more memorable, and goes down a storm on a night out!

Colourless Colour is phenomenal.

It's not for everyone I guess. She doesn't have typical pop vocals thus obviously it'll grate on some, but I find it fabulous and unique. Really focused effort, reminds me a lot of the album 'Deep Cuts' by The Knife. Really, really great stuff. Lyrically artists like Little Boots / other hyped pop acts simply can't even compare. :/ Tigerlily especially has amazing lyrics ("I don't like the taste of demorality" / "But our communication is telepathy"). I just love La Roux for being something fairly fresh; she has her inspirations obviously but it really sounds like something different in a pop climate that's currently dominated by the likes of The Saturdays, etc. Growing Pains is a great bonus track as well.

Yayzzz for a good pop record this year. Finally.

I downloaded the album and got half way through it before deleting. I will never be able to take that voice for any length of time. It's awful. I can't think of a worse voice in pop if I'm honest, right up there witch Chad Kroeger! :puke:
I'm not a fan of La Roux (Except 'Bulletproof') but thought I'd give this a try, coz you never know and I agree 100% with you RFC. It's actually a shame, coz I THINK I'd like it had the album had somebody else on vocals

Apart from 'Bulletproof' and 'Fascination' (which are the only two I'd consider listening to again [probably not in a row but still... LOL]) it's just too much for me personally.

In For The Kill // 8.0/10

Tigerlily // 9.5/10

Quicksand // 8.0/10

Bulletproof // 8.5/10

Colourless Colour // 10/10

I'm Not Your Toy // 9.0/10

Cover My Eyes // 8.0/10

As If By Magic // 7.5/10

Fascination // 8.5/10

Reflections Are Protections // 8.5/10

Armour Love // 9.0/10

Growing Pains // 9.0/10

Total: 8.35/10

I'm not actually in love with this album (coz Bulletproof is already starting to annoy me :heehee: ), but it is really good. :) Tigerlily, Colourless Colour and of course IFTK are the best at the mo for me.

And am I the only person who listened to 'As If By Magic' and at the beginning of it thought that it wasn't Elly singing but Sophie Ellis-Bextor? :heehee:

Giving the album a listen now. Not expecting to like it, but I may be surprised. Despite hating her voice on the track, it's impossible not to song along to "In For The Kill". Partly because it's a really good song, but also because it's fun to try and do the voice. :heehee:
The only good album track is Cover My Eyes  thats just amazing  the rest just isn't that good.

My thought's exactly.

Album's pretty $h!te.

3 days to go. :cheer:

I don't want to download it first, I'll listen to it first on Spotify. :)

I listened to this objectively, heck, I might be coming round to the grating voice but I can honestly say this album seems so filler-tastic. I think it's good lyrically, but the majority of it is just dull and even the eccentric voice can't lift it. It's basically an album of someone singing along to 80s/early 90s video game music and trying her best to make it sound meaningful and interesting.

7.5 In for the Kill

8.0 Tigerlily

5.0 Quicksand

9.5 Bulletproof

7.0 Colourless Colour

7.0 I'm Not Your Toy

7.0 Cover My Eyes

7.0 As If By Magic

6.5 Fascination

6.5 Reflections are Protections

7.0 Armour Love

7.5 Growing Pains

So I think that averages at just over 7/10, which isn't bad but it's not even close to being one of my favourite albums of what has been a fairly poor year for albums so far.

Little Boots may be predictable, cliché and less of an individual than La Roux but give me her album any day. I guess it depends what you're after. If you want an album to sit and listen to on headphones, analysing every lyric, go for La Roux. If you want a more accessible album with big Pop tunes, go for Little Boots. (basically I think La Roux has more 'substance', but that doesn't necessarily make her album more enjoyable)

I absolutely love it. So strong throughout, lyrically very good and not repetitive as I thought it might be. 'Colourless Colour' is my favorite at the moment.

08 In for the Kill

9/10 Excellent :music:

Oh my, I'm vair ambivalent on this album. Partly it's very good, but as loffly as Colourless Colour etcz. are, I wanted another Quicksand or something :(

ANYWAY:

10 In For The Kill

10 Tigerlily

11 Quicksand

10 Bulletproof

10 Colourless Colour

08 I'm Not Your Toy - seriously, what the hell have they done to this? It's just kinda blunted now and far too Nintendo-y in the backing music...I shall stick with the promo version kthx.

10 Cover My Eyes

08 As If By Magic

06 Fascination - but tbf I've never thought much of it

07 Reflections Are Protection - Probably just because it's fairly old for me though...and unlike Quicksand actually gets old.

08 Armour Love

08 Growing Pains

Which gives an average of 8.83, putting it officially UP THERE amongst my faves of the year. But still, BLEH at the second half of the album :( BIG mistake if they're releasing the new version of INYT...I think the best choice for third single would be Cover My Eyes to at least show a different side of La Roux, or if they're determined to go all GaGa on this project then they quite frankly MUST re-release Quicksand...
