If it wasn't for the fact that N-Dubz appeared on 'Number One' people wouldn't even be saying it was chavvy. If it was by a similar(ish) US artist like Ne-Yo it wouldn't be chavvy. It's at the top because it's actually a great song with mass appeal.

Maybe the gays should buy more singles so Girls Aloud could be at the top instead...

I have to disagree.

Seeing how Tinchy Stryder is the self proclaimed "Prince of Grime" and a leading exponent on the UK Garage scene having been a former member of the Ruff Sqwad and hails from the Bow (E3) area of East London.

As the stereotypical image of a "chav" is a white aggressive teen of working class background, who wears branded sports and casual clothing, who often fights and engages in petty criminality, and is often assumed to be unemployed or in a low paid job whilst listening to US Urban/Rap or UK Garage music, then the UK#1 single could surely not be a more perfect fit.

For the record I hate Number 1; but I really liked his previous single Take Me Back; I think the Ironik single is very lame in a cheap T.I. way for its use of the brilliant Elton John 1971 track as its musical bed and hook; whilst I think Bonkers is a tune and a half and hope it is UK#1 on Sunday 10th May.

Yeah, that was when he used to make good music.

'Number 1' is excellent, I agree that if it was an american artist like Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Usher etc. people wouldn't be saying it's chavvy at all. Oh and I know plenty of 'non chavvy' people that love both 'Number 1' and 'Bonkers', just because they both feature rapping parts doesn't really make them chavvy as such.

Exactly. It's because of who it IS that's why the song is chavvy, not because of what it is. 'Number One' is esentially a pop song with rap in, not really any different from most of the stuff Pussycat Dolls and Rihanna have been releasing over the past two years yet they aren't labelled as being 'chavvy' on anything like the same extent. But why? Because they're American? Because they're female? It's even on local radio playlists at the moment, it must be appealing to far more people than just chavs (me for a start!).

Tinchy is actually a decent artist, the vast majority of his songs are far better than the entire output of a lot of male US artists (Akon)...

I think, when saying that, he's making a point that people are generalising by calling the Tinchy Stryder and N-Dubz song chavvy because of who it features, not because of the content. So he's generalising by saying only gay people like Girls Aloud. I mean, I could swear Mark likes a few of their songs at least?

Yes, thats exactly what he was saying. Stereotyping is bad for you, kids.

Quite. Music shouldn't really be judged by stereotype. Saying Tinchy is only number one because it's bought by chavs is quite clearly wrong, but seems to be accepted. Yet suggesting a different act is purchased by a different stereotype and it can get challenged straight away. The comment about only gay people buying Girls Aloud is clearly tongue in cheek and wrong...

Correction Tinchy WAS an excellent artist. But like so many acts; he has gone from being a leading exponent of his musical genre to dilute his music and likewise dilute the quality of music he has released in the quest to sell units by working with N-Dubz. In short Number 1 is the sound of a once credible artist (blanding) selling out.

Tinchy Stryder - Underground (2006)

Tinchy Stryder - Breakaway (2007)

Tinchy Stryder - Mainstream Money (2007)

In short he has done the UK Grime equivalent of going from "Straight Outta Compton" to "Ice Ice Baby" IMHO.

I mean could you imagine in the late 1980s Public Enemy going from Rebel Without A Pause, Bring The Noize, Don't Believe The Hype & Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos to making a record with MC Hammer in the space of one album.

I don't get why its not acceptable for an artist to 'sell out'? If they have a talent and they want to progress in music its needed. Sure it upsets people who were there from the beginning, but when bands and artists I like have 'sold out' in the past i've no problem with it. Number 1 is an excellent song. It appeals to chavs, but not just chavs. It's one of the catchiest songs about. Dappy sounds vvv good on this record. Even his haterz would probably agree.

Dizzee Rascal is another artist that has 'sold out' too but he's currently one of the biggest UK artists about and is well respected with the music business (and rightly so). It's allowed him to progress as an artist and get the recogniton he deserves in mainstream.

I think that by working with N-Dubz he's made a deliberate decision to be associated with the chav scene

I'm in agreement Ronney; the constant cries of "Selling out!" are boring and usually really far-fetched. Personally I think the two Tinchy singles are infinitely better (and a hell of a lot more listenable) than those posted in this thread. Fact is, if most artists didn't sell out, they'd never be a success and before long they'd have no means of distributing music, so we should be grateful in many cases.

Go Veronicas :cheer:

Archuleta enters at #150 after performing on Paul O'Grady :).

I think that by working with N-Dubz he's made a deliberate decision to be associated with the chav scene

Tinchy has always been associated with the "chav scene". He lives near me (like 5-10 mins) and a lot of people that i know, know him. Also ive heard his pre-"selling out" stuff a gazillion of times being played at the back of an unfortunate bus :( But luckily for us, hes changed that.

EDIT: Thank god for Kelly getting back in the top 100. Was getting a bit worried. And Jark, i believe you have an apology to make to the wonderful Veronicas  :heehee:
