A rather forgotten BBC gem, that disappeared rapidly and the final one (a Christmas edition) was postboned...and to my knowledge never got shown.

Now BOB DYLAN (loathe or love him)...has not achieved a #1 album since 1970. He won`t really do it this week, with NOW 72 still up there. Although of course he will on the Artist album front. But for this week anyway Bob sells 8k more than Enemy. I always think what a mess various compilers have made of the album chart since 1969. One minute every album be it Budget/Full Price/Compilation were all included then not...The BBC insisted between 1969 - 1975 all albums counted to their top 30, then Budget albums were dropped from their chart. Then in 1989 we lost the compilations. Then, we had similar business with singles/songs...and it took a while before all downloads were allowed in...That`s sorted now, but albums are still a mess in my humble opinion.

Let`s go to the Flashback...to May 1993: Charts compiled by MRIB (Media Research Information Bureau)

The top tv

01 CORONATION STREET 17.40M

05 PEAK PRACTICE 13.40

14 SHORT CIRCUIT II 10.70

15 POLICE ACADEMY III 10.50

16 NEIGHBOURS 10.40

17 MR BEAN GOES TO TOWN 10.40

18 EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 1993 10.40

19 DR QUINN MEDICINE WOMAN 10.20

20 EMMERDALE 10.00

Not a lot to say about 1993`s tv really...Wasn`t Mr Bean really the best show?! RIDERS was the JILLY COOPER epic...love on horseback! ITV dug into the movie dept for the Bank Holiday, again. NEIGHBOURS wasn`t really on 10.40 for a single episode...really 6m. The FA CUP was on BBC, where it went to a replay. Arsenal v Sheffield Wednesday. Eurovision was from Ireland and Millstreet. Ireland`s 5th victory in the 38th Contest, won by Niamh Kavanagh "In Your Eyes". The UK came 2nd with SONIA singing "Better The Devil You Know"...and no sign of Kylie! We got 164 points to Ireland`s 187. 25 Countries took part. Also axed from tv was the floppy Wogan replacement soap ELDORADO...ITV launched their version of the GOLDEN GIRLS entitled "Brighton Belles"...SHEILA GISH, WENDY CRAIG, SHEILA HANCOCK, and JEAN BOHT. They should`ve known better than to try to copy yet another Yankee sitcom! They didn`t however because 1996 brought us RUSS ABBOTT`s role as Ted Bundy in ITV`s version of MARRIED WITH CHILDREN....MARRIED FOR LIFE! Unfortunately ITV should have stopped after "WHO`S THE BOSS"....became "THE UPPER HAND". Another event earlier in 1993 was the GRAND NATIONAL that was abandoned after 2 false starts...it nearly happened again in 2009. They never learn! The void race in 93 was won by ESHA NESS ridden by JOHN WHITE at 66-1....and they didn`t pay out, and I actually put some money on it, arghh!

1993`s Albums:

01 NE NOW 24 - VARIOUS

02 NE BANG - WORLD PARTY

19 11 DIVA - ANNIE LENNOX

20 09 SUEDE - SUEDE

NOW 24 breaking all records in 1993. The ever forgotten WORLD PARTY. Miss POLLY JEAN HARVEY...as PJ HARVEY (back for 2009). Cliff on another album, that peaked at #2 with MRIB, but was a Radio 1 #1! R.E.M. were riding up again on the 31st week in the chart. THE BODYGUARD was on 22 weeks. 9 weeks for STING as the cleverly titled "Ten Summoner`s Tales" was on the rise again after getting to #2, behind LENNY KRAVITZ in March. STING`s real name (of course) GORDON SUMMONER. Now I seem to remember that this particular DURAN DURAN album was actually called "The WEDDING ALBUM"...Why it was listed as just "Duran Duran" on MRIB`s top 50 is open to question? 15 weeks for DINA CARROLL, who peaked at #4. In and straight out again for the FALL. DAVID ESSEX was back, as ERIC CLAPTON was up and down and peaked at #3. DAVID BOWIE got a new deal with Savage records...and a hit solo album peaking at #1. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN was UNPLUGGED and peaked at #2. We start a campaign for the return of ARRESTED DEVELOPEMENT...so good in 1992/3, and a long titled album that peaked at #5, and 18 weeks in the charts at this point. Remember JANE`S ADDICTION? Well, PORNO FOR PYROS were PERRY FARRELL, and STEPHEN PERKINS next band from Los Angeles formed in 1992. As ANNIE LENNOX slipped on her 56th week, SUEDE slipped on week 5. Spare a thought for CONNIE FRANCIS, as her SINGLES COLLECTION was just outside the top 20...spawned by ITV`s "Lipstick On Your Collar" series...and a big fav, on ED STEWART`s Easy Listening Album Chart Show...which was chiefly forgotten and broadcasted on Mondays 3.30 - 5pm on Radio 2!

49 NE FREAK ME - SILK

50 26 CAT`S IN THE CRADLE - UGLY KID JOE

Heading the singles in 93 we found GEORGE MICHAEL with "Live" E.P. featuring the well played "Somebody To Love". Also featured was "Killer", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "These Are The Days Of Our Lives", and "Calling You". This featured Queen, and Lisa Stansfield. In some Countries it was a 6 track E.P. So, what was the other track then? Anyone? WHITNEY HOUSTON, and JANET JACKSON were the 2 girls that couldn`t get to the top, as BLUEBELLS slipped and ACE OF BASE waited. 2UNLIMITED were slightly getting tedious! R.E.M. were hurting. Obviously they were worried about the future. SNOW were one of the better re-hashed reggae line-up. A re-issue of 1992`s INNER CIRCLE track payed off, and took them to 3 for 3 weeks. ROBIN S (the first time round) managed to spend about 4 weeks at 7 on the MRIB Top 50. Obviously the radioplay of "Wind It Up" and the PRODIGY did not go well on Independant Radio. Neither did they like SHABBA RANKS too much...Although the airplay element was only 10% in 1993...to be totally ruined in July, when some fool at Capital FM decided to use 50% airplay and incorporate it into the Official chart...then only use the sales top 10! What? Unfortunately this was taken from another Capital idea...as from early 1992, they`d already done that with their own London Top 40 Chart. Guess who introduced the Capital Countdown during 1992? Yep, it was the Pepsi Chart host "Neil Fox". Arghh! Bring back David Jensen we cried...We had some intials in the chart in 1993, and SWV were SISTERS WITH VOICES. P.A.N. were POWER OF AMERICAN NATIVES...Well there you go! Many tracks that don`t even get heard today including the SWV one...DR ALBAN, TERENCE DARBY, DEF LEPPARD, KINGMAKER...infact most of the top 50. The 30th Anniversary put DAVE CLARK back in the chart, as back came GARY MOORE from 1979. UGLY KID JOE cut HARRY CHAPIN`s 1974 UK flop. Meanwhile outside the 50...EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL cut SIMON AND GARFUNKEL`s "The Only Living Boy In New York".

Jade Ewan is at #7 :o

The Top 2 will likely have half-decent physical sales, but that's not saying much.

I quite like the Retro chart from 1993, got most of the tracks from that week, I did hate the Sonia track with passion.

Ooh I'd LOVE the Maccabees to get the #1 next week!

Great to see Placebo in the pre-order chart too!

Thanks as always, Dave :D

Thanks Dave

Great news for Jade and the Eurovision comp. Look forward to seeing both in their respective top 20s, though I do agree about the splitting of the comp from the main chart, it should be together really...

Jade and ALW on Jonathan Ross tonight :kink:

Never mind Tom...They will have to be content with the double #1...at 11! ;) Lily is stretching ahead, so they won`t get top ten. I shouldn`t think, unless we all go out and buy the physical in droves tomorrow.

It's a thought... :teresa: They do have a younger fanbase though, so I expect the physical to sell well to kids and teenagers.

To help with some of your questions, Dave:

Re "Dad" - I remember a BBC2 sitcom from 1985 starring George Cole called "Comrade Dad" - but I'm guessing by the years it's not the one your'e thinking of?

Re Duran Duran - "The Wedding Album" was an unofficial title for another eponymous album from them (rather like The Beatles' "White Album") - so called as its artwork featured a couple who had just got married

RE "Five Live EP" - as I remember the "Killer" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" tracks (both by George Michael) were both part of a live medley, and then featured again on some formats in a remixed fashion. However, this again only accounts for five tracks. I'm sure in the UK the EP was split across two CD formats - three tracks on each (I think?) - both with "Somebody To Love" as the lead track...

Well doesnt this just say it all about the physical dying off.

Untouchable is the no1 physical this week and the no11 download song.

So even when you combine the number one physical with the no11 download, it still doesnt budge it from its position at no11.

Miley Cyrus will have a big increase tomorrow and may pass P!nk and HT may get a couple of places as well. Beyonce might fall to 11 with Lily's downloads increasing and GA's physicals will pick up on Saturday.

The download difference between Beyonce and Lily is very small...due to the fact Lily is ahead on Itunes, and Bee is dominating her on Amazon! Beyonce, also has the constant trickle of physicals...keeping her ahead. She'll receive some tomorrow. no 9 is pretty much there tbh!

i dont understand, when you know that both of them are creaming GA on downloads, and Beyonce also has a physical (to lessen GA's physical 'catch-up'), how they would jump past her! you're logic is astounding lol!

Something from albums 1993:

05 01 GET A GRIP - AEROSMITH

If everybody says that you gotta do this, is that an indication of next week's #1 single? :o

Dizzee for #1 xP

Also, I would be stunned if the mau5 (and indeed the 'skade) make the top 25 this week! I hope it climbs even more in the coming weeks ;D

Great to see Prodigy up to 17, hoping for top 15 next week.

Thanks for that.

On the "Dad" thing...Yes I do know George Cole played the lead in Comrade Dad (a strange sitcom, where Frank Sinatra was the President)! "Dad" appeared around 1998. There were 2 series and that woman who played "Rona" in 2 Point 4 Children was in it. George`s greeting in it was always "Hell-O".

i'm not sure re Five Live EP being released across two formats - tracklisting i have:

(1) Somebody To Love (5:17)

(2) Killer / Papa Was A Rollin' Stone (4:28)

(3) These Are The Days Of Our Lives (4:43)

with Lisa Stansfield

(4) Calling You (5:14)

There were two CD formats for the Five Live EP, CD1 is the tracklisting in seanyboy's post. CD2 featured Somebody To Love andThese Are The Days Of Our Lives as above plus a PM Dawn remix of Killer/Papa Was A Rolling Stone. Calling You was omitted and I guess this was done for timing reasons to make the format chart eligible as the remix alone is over 9 minutes long On this version Somebody To Love was relegated to track 2 with the remix of K/PWARS taking top billing. The 7" and 12" versions had the same track listings as CD1.
