May 16, 200916 yr TBH I find this a bit of a non-story and my wife feels the same. I really couldn't care less if they've been fiddling or not. Let's face it, eeryone fiddles in every walk of life. I bet all you lot criticising aren't whiter then white yourselves. Just jumping on the proverbial bandwagon really. If you were paying tax you WOULD give a damn am guessing your wife sponges off the state too if she thinks MP's stealing taxpayers money is not a big issue
May 16, 200916 yr If you were paying tax you WOULD give a damn am guessing your wife sponges off the state too if she thinks MP's stealing taxpayers money is not a big issue FYI she works as a nanny and pays tax and NI. I only get Incapacity benefit for ME, like a single person, as she's working. I don't get the spouse increase. It's not like income support in that she could be earning £1million a week and I'd still be able to get IB. Oh and it's a bone of contention with her that she works and I don't so don't slag her off at all. Edited May 16, 200916 yr by Crazy Chris
May 16, 200916 yr It just seems weird that given she pays tax and presumably earns barely over minimum wage that she is happy to see her tax go towards MP's tennis courts, swimming pools, plasma tv's and moats :manson:
May 16, 200916 yr Well she says that in her life there's more important things to worry about, that's all. She has a stressful job looking after a 3 year-old girl and gets up early and resents me not working. Edited May 16, 200916 yr by Crazy Chris
May 16, 200916 yr Chris mate you love me over at the other place. lynda. :o Oh sorry then, what other place, Haven or Digital Spy?
May 17, 200916 yr There has been an increasing apathy towards politicians in general over the last decade as people have become disillusioned with the government and their deceits and failings. Now this expenses scandal comes to light as people are feeling the pinch and worrying about job security in the biggest economic downturn of our generation. Of course there is widespread anger and outrage. History has shown that severe economic downturns/ depressions coupled with a significant proportion of the population completely alienated by mainstream politics is a dangerous situation. I have no doubt that the abhorrent BNP will pick up a significant number of seats at the Euro elections. The trust lost may never be fully regained; I’m not sure the current crop of politicians from the 3 main parties are capable of changing peoples perceptions of what has happened here.

I bet all you lot criticising aren't whiter then white yourselves. Just jumping on the proverbial bandwagon really. I can quite honestly say I have never claimed benefits or claimed for expenses from my company, let alone for things I have no right to. What a ridiculous statement to make. She has a stressful job looking after a 3 year-old girl and gets up early and resents me not working. Wow, your wife sure sounds crazy!

May 20, 200916 yr All this talk of who people will be voting for is utterly mindboggling.... THE ONLY WAY TO LET THESE THIEVES KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THEM IS TO NOT VOTE AT ALL. If any single one of these MPs now getting rather smug about it (Cameron, anyone?) REALLY felt that strongly about how their colleagues were scamming (as IF they didn't know...they should do - they all are bound to abide by the 'rules' Thatcher brought into place) then why the HELL didn't they stand up earlier and make their voices heard? The sad truth is - WE DON'T HAVE A SINGLE MP IN PARLIAMENT WHO STOOD UP AND SAID WHAT A NONSENSE THESE RULES WERE. They ALL knew FULL WELL that they and their cohorts could scam the general public. And that they WERE scamming us - left, right and centre. A total no-confidence non-vote is the ONLY way to let them know this country DEMANDS change. The whole lot MUST be flushed out. As Hislop said last week "The House of Common Criminals".... surely as it must be known from now on. Get every rotten one of them out on their arses from their privileged positions. Not only the ones caught with their hands in the tills... but the ones who stood by and let it happen (aiding and abetting, maybe?). And while we're at it... I'd like a FULL report on ALL MPs' expenses since Thatcher brought these rules in...... especially the bills surrounding her - surely she has nothing to hide? I'm pretty sure as she deemed these laws a-ok that SHE, in particular, as well as that snivelling berk of a husband of hers, scammed us as much as they humanly could. And, as public burning and crucifixion is not particularly welcomed these days, surely there's room in a prison SOMEWHERE for this vile old witch?
May 20, 200916 yr I'm rather fond of this one. A £250 alarm clock?    http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/ho...icle2438240.ece

MPs voted against the recommendations. Gordon Brown and David Cameron shrugged their shoulders, rolled their eyes and walked away. Nick Clegg said that things had to change and that there should be discussions between the three main party leaders on how to reform the system. Cameron and Brown finally agreed after the revelations started to be published.

Nevertheless, Lib Dem MPs have seemingly been indulging in the gross abuse of public money almost as much as Labour and the Tories. I really want to see a legitimate minority party (ie. not BNP) break through at the EU elections to send a really powerful message. Ideally the Greens, though I'd settle for UKIP even though I personally disagree with pretty much everything that party stands for.

Ideally the Greens, though I'd settle for UKIP even though I personally disagree with pretty much everything that party stands for. So far only one Lib Dem MP has been accused of trying to abuse the system and he didn't get away with it - albeit for the wrong reason. The other MPs have perfectly reasonable justifications for their claims - as do some Labour and Tory MPs. The Lib Dems are the only party to advocate an electoral system that would give voters a chance of getting rid of any MP who abuses the system. A study by a political blogger has shown, not surprisingly, that MPs in safe seats are far more likely to abuse the system than MPs in marginal seats.
May 20, 200916 yr We could have the 'winner' folks http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...e-payments.html • Sir Peter Viggers claimed for a £1,645 floating “duck island” in the garden pond at his Hampshire home. In a statement, the Conservative Party said: “Sir Peter Viggers has confirmed that he will retire as MP for Gosport at the next election. He will do so at the direct request of David Cameron”;
May 20, 200916 yr Something related to the expense on "duck island" MP made claim for 'non-mortgage' A Tory whip claimed mortgage interest on his constituency home even though the house had never had a mortgage on it, the Daily Telegraph has reported. Bill Wiggin said he made a mistake on the forms which was picked up in 2006. He said he should have been claiming for interest on his London second home. Another Tory, Gosport MP Sir Peter Viggers claimed £20,000 on gardening expenses, the newspaper said. Sir Peter is expected to announce he is stepping down at the next election. The paper also said that he claimed £2,000 for a duck island. After hearing about the latest expenses revelations, David Cameron told Sir Peter he faced the removal of the whip if he did not announce that he would not run again at the next election, the BBC has learned. The Conservative scrutiny panel will decide what figure Sir Peter will have to pay back. Sources say it will be a "substantial sum". The interest claimed by Mr Wiggin was for the mortgage on his London property. Mr Wiggin has said he sent the mortgage deeds for his London home to the Commons Fees Office to make it clear. The latest revelations come after Commons leader Harriet Harman set out changes to MPs' expenses she said would put Parliament "above reproach". Immediate changes, agreed by party leaders, include a £1,250 a month cap on mortgage interest and rent payments. Others are a ban on "flipping" second homes in 2009/10 and on claiming for furniture, cleaning and stamp duty. The changes - which are temporary until an independent review of the whole system makes new recommendations in the autumn - were welcomed by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrat leaderships. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8060563.stm
May 21, 200916 yr Labour have had a massive majority in parliament particularly in 1997 and 2001 where the majority was well into the hundreds had Blair wanted to he could have passed reforms regardless of what tory MP's felt especially if he used a "three line whip" so what?.... just look at the furrore this has become, the tories could have toppled labour in a sleaze war IF their noses werent DEEPER in the trough! see this mornings headlines.... 16k duck island, payments for a non existant mortgage... wheres the POLICE PLEASE.
