What I don't understand is; why don't people enter these songs for the normal contests? If there are so many people with foreign songs why don't they just send them to regular BJSCs? They must rate the song enough to send it to one contest and I see why no reason why people would judge it differently whatever contest it has been entered into. Why do we need a completely different contest for people to send these songs?

Because it's not fair for some contestants. People would understand English-languaged songs, but not the foreign one.

For some reason, few people would disregard the songs or something which is unknown to them language-wise or cba to listen to it again . ;)

Because it is rare a Foreign Language song does well in a normal contest.

It gives people the chance to send something they wouldn't have considered sending to a normal contest. I wouldn't have entered Molly to a normal contest because i don't tend to listen to much non-english music so only discovered it today.

When i'm looking for new music i tend to find songs in english, which is what i then enter.

I'm sure there are quite a lot of posters in the same boat

Says he who has had a 14month break from BJSC.

Spin off stays from my point of view. This one may 'seem' a bit soon after the last, but it's not too long before the next best of so it sits in-between them quite nicely.

Plus, while hunting i found a great new song, and at the end of the day THAT is what this contest is all about.

sorry i needed the toilet.

i never realised people that enter this contest were so narrowminded when it comes to music, its done in a different language to English, why does it matter? i dont listen to songs because they are in English or in a different language :/

at least Jonny speaks sense tbh. its because he is a true music fan.

It is a fact that foreign songs don't do quite as well in BJSCs so people who want to send them may be put off. Similarly it is an area which most British users don't explore very often so some people may have never even thought to send a non-english entry, for those people I'm sure it will be a game full of discoveries.

For those who don't wish to participate, it's only a couple of weeks away from the main contest. use that time to find soemthing brilliant for XVII ^_^

Well if they don't do very well in a normal contest doesn't that in itself tell you something?! People obviously don't like foreign songs that much or else they would vote for them, so why is there a contest in which contains only songs which the majority of people DON'T like?

Your first line makes no sense. What's not fair? And of course they wouldn't understand the foreign one, it's in another language. o:

And as far as I know no-one does that? What's the point in entering if you do that?

Well if you've never really listened to a foreign song before then why has it taken a contest for you to decide to listen? And why wouldn't you have entered Molly into a normal contest anyway?

People who will send a foreign song will unlikely to win the contest, because I feel that not many will try to appreciate some foreign music. ;)

if people cant appreciate foreign music then they shouldnt be so closed minded and broaden their music taste, for a contest that is aimed at music fans it is quite frankly embassasing if so many cant appreciate music from other countries.

I've listened to the one's presented in this contest, but i've never gone out in search of one.

Until this contest i only ever listened to what was being played on the music channels and the radio. Now i search myspace and blogs for new artists. I've never really been exposed to song that haven't been sung in english, and i've never gone in hunt of them. I've always found song that i love to enter that have been sung in english, so this has forced me to go and find something that i wouldn't never normally listen to.

I wouldn't have entered Molly because i wouldn't have discovered her.

I never saw the point in the contest as winning per se, I always thought the point was introducing people to new music?

It is supposed to be.

To be fair lyrics that you understand DO add so much more to a song, in some, but not all cases. For example, Florence And The Machine - Rabbit Heart i'm sure i could enjoy just as much in English as in.... German, because the lyrics don't mean all that much to me.

unless they are exceptionally good lyrics, or ones that you closely realte to, then they do add to the song quite a bit yes, but not appreciating it because its sung in a forgien language is just plain closed minded.

I agree with you 100%. Holy crap :o

But that is why we need this spin-off, and hopefully of can introduce more people to some incredible foreign music.

Exactly! They don't do well because most people don't have interest in foreign songs, and whether that is lazy or not, having a foreign spin-off alienates a lot of people.

I still think though that the because point is that there's no point in having a spin-off just for the SAKE of it. Wait to have one when the winner is too busy to host like last time...

Like I said, I still don't understand why most of the people who were FOR the UK #10 Spinoff are suddenly against this? DOES NOT MAKE SENSE PLS. I'm not CRAZY over a Foreign Spinoff but I think it could be a bit of fun, way more fun than the previous one. I usually find an English language song in time for the new BJSC that I like more, so I never really get the chance to enter a foreign song. Makes for a nice change. And yes, unfortunately a few people in this contest hate foreign language songs for some reason, and it is narrow minded and blergh. Maybe they'll find one they like through this? If they bother to enter...

Of course, the spin off won't be the size of a regular BJSC, as otherwise it'd just be BJSCXVII. It's meant to be a fairly small thing for a bit of fun. WOO. And I know it may seem hypocritical because of how often I complained about the last one, but that was because the theme was narrow. You have millions of artists to chose from now? Remixes would have been fun too. It's sort of ODD that most people wouldn't be complaining if this was a remix contest...

I really don't get what the fuss is all about. We're having a small themed spin-off contest for a bit of fun. So what? It's a chance to send songs people enjoy that probably wouldn't do well in the BJSC. What's wrong with that? It's obvious people probably wouldn't pay as much attention to a foreign language song so this contest could be pretty interesting. If people don't like the theme or the idea of a spin-off then don't join! It's as simple as that. In my opinion it's nice to try something different once in a while. The next BJSC is coming soon after so I don't know what people are complaining about...

I don't really get how it alienates people either. No one is barred from entering the spin-off... it's your choice to enter or not. I would think most people have at least a few foreign language songs they enjoy and could enter if willing?

Because half people care too much about doing well in the contest or just don't go hunting for non-english songs (like Phil) as they will most likely don't do well, the quarter doesn't appreciate foreign music at all and others don't care that much about doing well and sometimes send foreign languages songs (like me). So I don't think this is kind of similar as to sending the english lyrics song.

Exactly! Couldn't agree more...

I sent two foreign language songs and they both failed, so seeing the results of the spin-off poll is kinda confusing...

As I said in a thread earlier in my opinion spin-offs are a bad idea.

The idea of a male spin-off was rejected because it takes away everyone's best/favourite potential male entry which makes the female domination of the contest more likely. So why isn't this a reason for everything else to be rejected? If everyone sends their best foreign song it makes the chances of a foreign song winning a normal contest much less, the same for remixes, instrumentals or whatever. People have said that foreign songs don't perform in normal BJSC but that's clearly not the case. I think it may have been Pavel said last week that something like 8/25 (roundabout a third) foreign songs that have been sent have done well, which as far as I'm concerned is a pretty decent rate of return. Considering there are now regularly more than 45 entires in a contest and people consider everything to have finished in the bottom half of a final to be a flop then only a third of all entered songs can be said to have done well anyway. So foreign songs have just as much chance of a hit as anything else then! If people want to send them that badly they should send them to a normal contest, if it's good enough it will do well, as has been proven on numerous occasions! It's only peoples lack of willingness to take a risk that stops them being sent in greater numbers.

IMO if we have spin-offs it should be something completely different from the normal contest, I thought UK#10s was a great idea, it was a bit of harmless fun and took nothing away from the normal contest as the chances of any of them being entered were minute. If there is to be a spin-off I think it has to be involving cheap or novelty songs, they're the only songs which won't take anything away from normal BJSC but no one wants them. I'd be quite happy for there to be no more spin-offs, they are a bit pointless IMO.

I did say whilst I wasn't a fan I'd still enter anyway just for the fun of it but if people are going to create some kind of backlash and sit out of this then I think I will too, it's not as if I have an entry or much time to find one, given the ridiculously short time they seem to be given which again just makes them seem a bit pointless.
