Officers were called to assist and Boyle was reportedly taken by ambulance to the Priory in Southgate, north London, escorted by police.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police were called to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act. The woman was taken voluntarily by ambulance to a clinic. At the request of doctors, police accompanied the ambulance."

Earlier on Sunday it emerged Boyle was taking time off on the advice of a doctor after losing to dance act Diversity in the ITV talent show.

Television company talkbackThames released a statement offering her "ongoing support" amid newspaper reports that she had run amok backstage after her loss shouting "I hate this show".

Shock winners Diversity had earlier praised the 48-year-old, nicknamed the Hairy Angel, for her generous behaviour in defeat. Choreographer Ashley Banjo, 20, said: "She was so gracious about it, she said the best act won and, backstage, she said she had seen something special. She was so nice about it."

Boyle has helped to ensure that the competition kept grabbing the headlines, and the final became the most watched television programme in the UK for five years.

ITV said it attracted nearly three-quarters of the TV audience, with a peak of 19.2 million viewers.

Diversity took 24.9% of the public vote in the final, above Boyle's 20.2% share. Just under four million people voted, ITV said.

I'm sure she was already a bit "loopy", so no she couldn't.

19.2 million viewers is AMAZING :o

Lol, i wouldnt like to be in that place.. My cousins lives on the estate just over the wall covering it and when i went to visit i swear i could hear screaming coming from there  It was like something from Saw...
Well she had reporters following her every move, I thought she was acting quite odd on Saturday.
Poor thing, i really do have loads of sympathy for her tbh. Hope she gets better.

but voting numbers were LOW

According to my mum, she has some sort of mental illness anyway (she said something about it on the live final about her "not being all there",- she works with mental people btw).

my mum said the same sort of thing to me ^

saying that she has has problems all her life

Susan has learning difficulties; the astoundingly incredible amount of media attention from around the world would put a lot of pressure on the average person. I hope she gets the space she needs to adjust, sadly she’ll probably won’t be far away from a tabloids columns for the next few years.

Susan Boyle is just another example of how the media in this country uses ordinary people for their own sick, twisted purposes, the "build 'em up, knock 'em down" mentality... Cowell must've loved it as well in a way, he got 19 million viewers for his piece of cr@p show "Britain Exploits the Mentally Challenged", oh, sorry, "Britain's Got Talent" I obviously meant to say....

If she has indeed had a mental breakdown, there are a lot of people in the media who should be feeling very, very guilty... But of course they wont, because they have no conscience, they care only about viewing and circulation figures, and advertising revenue......

The Media in this country disgusts me..... <_<

Remember a certain Max Clifford who does the PR for Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden & Piers Morgan amongst many others was responsible for the PR of this show. He has (as proven recently in the Jade Goody snuff movie & with poor Peter Andre) a huge amount of influence with the media especially Murdoch Inc (The Sun; News Of The World & Daily Mail) & with the owner of The Star & Daily Express.

It is no coincident that these papers lead the backlash to pursuade the public to ridicule this slightly backward church going Scottish lady. Probably because Simon Cowell, at the very least did not want a foregone conclusion as to who would win BGT; if not actively trying to destroy her chances of winning.

Yet again coming so shortly after the Jade Goody business, this is further evidence to the power and influence of Max Clifford whom I regard as one step away from Satan.

Spot on... Clifford is indeed a totally vile creature.... I think that if I saw him in the streets it would be very hard for me to resist smashing his skull in with a rock.... I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was the one who suggested the nickname "Hairy Angel"..... The fact is, Susan Boyle, having learning difficulties, could not possibly be expected to realise what the net result of all this could be, she just wanted to go on a talent show and sing a bit, I doubt it even entered her mind what was to follow.. What the likes of Clifford, Morgan, Cowell, etc have done is a supreme act of cruelty against someone who more-or-less would likely think like a child and not really be capable of comprehending the sheer weight of the mass media coming down on her like a ton of bricks.... She's not a hardened media operator like, say, Jordan....

Frankly, you wouldn't treat a dog the way the Press, Clifford and Cowell have treated Susan Boyle.... Is it really not about high time the regulators started intervening with these "Talent" shows to prevent people from becoming exploited....?

Much as shows like these are only really interesting because of the loon characters, it is clear that safeguards need to put in place for series like BGT, the X Factor, Big Brother et all. Exposing an unstable woman to worldwide attention and the ensuing inevitable media backlash, was plain irresponsible.

But it's NO good simply blaming Cowell and Clifford. The general public is EVERY bit as much to blame. We've all known for AGES how these shows treats it's participants. It's never been a secret that these shows chews people up and spits them out. But do we stop watching? HELL NO. Indeed, we love nothing more than those first few weeks of any talent show, when you get the lunatics coming on howling away in the mistaken but genuine belief that they are Freddie Mercury. They're the most interesting part of the show. Mocking the afflicted.

And whilst we're all still avidly watching these shows and spending huge amounts on phone voting, buying the CDs, helping the channels bring in advertising revenue, buying the tabloid for the latest gossip; of course people like Max Clifford are going to come along and take advantage.

Yes, the shows need to kick themselves up the arse and started behaving with a bit more responsibility. But they're not the only guilty parties.

Mocking people who are a bit delusional and foolish (but otherwise have all their faculties intact) and the sort of treatment meted out to someone with GENUINE mental health issues is not anything like the same thing Shoat. At all.... It wasn't the general public who dubbed her "the Hairy Angel" or "SuBo" (hmm, sounds a bit like Sumo dunnit....?), I think you'll find it was the fukkin' MEEEDJAAAAAHHHHHH who did that... These exploiting, Middle Class c/unts in their air conditioned offices who love nothing better than a "bear-baiting" contest, especially when it's someone lower-class or "afflicted"... Is the Media the reflector or the director of public opinion...? Personally, I believe that it is the latter.... Remember the '92 Election - 'IT WAS THE SUN WOT WON IT'.....
