Posted June 14, 200916 yr Peter Mandelson sparked fury yesterday when he let slip that ditching the pound in favour of the euro remains an “important objective” for Labour. Speaking in Berlin, Lord Mandelson insisted the euro had been a great success during the global downturn. The obsessively pro-Europe First Secretary of State’s comments caused widespread alarm at Westminster, especially as Labour has repeatedly failed to honour its manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on the European treaty. In a revealing insight into Government thinking, Lord Mandelson, who was yesterday sworn in by the Queen as Lord President of the Privy Council, said: “Does it remain an important objective for Britain to clear that the euro has been a great success in anchoring its eurozone members during the financial crisis. “I hope people will recognise that this represents a major vindication for the single currency.” Source: Sunday Express SHOULD BRITAIN DITCH THE POUND FOR THE EURO?
June 14, 200916 yr Frankly, I couldn't care less if it's the pound or the Euro.... I've no particular emotional attachement to it, it's money.... I dont really care whose face it is on my banknotes, or if it's a picture of a bridge or whatever, Scotland's actually done away with the Queen on the banknotes for a while now, and now Scottish notes are even beginning to look like Euros..... It would kind of make sense to join the Euro in a lot of ways, it would be less hassle, less time wasted changing bank notes, and your bank wouldn't be able to whack a surcharge on you if you used your Maestro card while in the likes of France or Germany and using a Link machine....
June 14, 200916 yr I have no real objection to joining the Euro, it would probably be easier for business to business transactions and also tourism to have single currency, don't really give a f*** about the pound of the queen or whatever I want the EU to be a free trade zone and a single common market and in that area I support the EU even if I despise 90% of what the EU do
June 14, 200916 yr I want the EU to be a free trade zone and a single common market and in that area I support the EU even if I despise 90% of what the EU do Well, there's hardly any difference between despising 90% of what the EU does and despising 90% of what Westminster does, is how I look at it.....
June 14, 200916 yr I want the EU to be a free trade zone and a single common market and in that area I support the EU even if I despise 90% of what the EU do I agree. I hate where the EU is heading. Lets go back to the roots I say! The UK using the Euro currency would be beneficial if the economies were booming, but I don't really think it would make a difference now that most of Euro-using countries are in recession. :heehee:
June 14, 200916 yr It's arguably the euro that has saved the Irish economy from going the way of Iceland's. Unfortunately the likes of the Express and the Mail make it unlikely we will get a rational debate over the merits of joining the euro any time soon.
June 14, 200916 yr I don't care at all. :o That's the exact opposite of what I would've expected you to say! :heehee:
June 14, 200916 yr Well don't care if I'm paid in pounds, Euros, dollars or whatever! Edited June 14, 200916 yr by Crazy Chris
June 14, 200916 yr I'd rather we had the Euro. I think the attachment to the pound is a generational thing to be honest. And probably an English generational thing rather than a UK wide generational thing. I asked Mother Jupiter (aged 74) her thoughts today. She said she couldn't care less whether she used the pound, euro, dollar or Monopoly money as long as the tea-room in the local garden centre accepted it. It would be easier all round to have the Euro and I do think the Euro is the more stable currency in these troubled times. Although I agree. I can imagine all the retired Colonels in Daily Mail land foaming at the mouth at the mere thought.
June 15, 200916 yr With a Conservative administration waiting in the wings the UK won’t be joining the euro anytime soon!
June 15, 200916 yr ... bugger that!...i didnt want decimalisation That's a rather ridiculous attitude mate.... Decimalisation is the best thing that happened in this country. I suppose YOU want shillings, tuppence, sixpence, groats and "ten bob" notes brought back...... Stop living in the dark ages..... What's so complicated about 10 pennies = 10p, 100pennies = £1, oooooooooohhhhh, dead complicated that..... The old pre-decimalisation system was ridiculous and cumbersome, totally and unnecessarily complex.... And just plain STUPID..... Speaking as someone who's grown up with Decimalisation and the Metric system, I'm sure glad that the EU has killed off all you old dinosaurs who stand in the way of progress and the creation of a much simpler and more practicalsystem..... :P You'd better get used to the idea of a single currency, it's gonna happen in your lifetime, whether you like it or not....
June 15, 200916 yr I am in major support for the Euro. It would have huge benefits for businesses as well as regular people. And it would be easier to prove we get taken for a ride for everything.
June 15, 200916 yr Why not stick the rhetoric and simply legislate to allow both currencies to be used in large shops (price tags are often in both anyway), restaurants and other service industries and let market forces show which is the most popular. I'd use either/both and not bother about what national symbol they bear. I've had all kinds of Euro.......Dutch, Italian, Irish etc. when I've been on holiday. I hardly notice. Tbh, I usually use my debit card for most items anyway.

June 16, 200916 yr groats were medieval... Which pretty much sums up your attitude towards perfectly rational progress a'la the Metric System/Decimalisation and a single currency... I put it in there on purpose..... :P I've looked at both systems, and I know which one I find the more practical and simpler to use....
June 16, 200916 yr Tbh, I usually use my debit card for most items anyway. And if your bank is anything like mine, they'll hit you with a charge every time you use that card while in the EU zone because of the whole "conversion" thing.... They sure as sh"t wont be able to justify that if we go with a single currency.....

I put it in there on purpose..... :P I've looked at both systems, and I know which one I find the more practical and simpler to use.... makes no difference, i grew up with the duo-decimal system and im happy to use it. it aint that hard! besides isnt going all metric and 'euro' dumbing down the currency for ease? but you moan (and moan and moan...lol) about dumbing down of music! HA!.
