Jay-Z has been in the game for thirteen years though, nobody keeps selling over the course of a decade and a half and eleven studio albums unless they evolve. Just 'being Jay-Z' isn't enough, just like 'being Madonna' wasn't enough 8 years after her debut, and just like 'being Lady GaGa' won't be enough in a year or two.

I would've actually thought people would be into this because despite the guest artists it's very old-school and epic and it doesn't really succumb to current trends. And it seems a lot of people do like it precisely because of that fact...

its not very old-school at all though really, if it was i wouldnt have a problem, i dont buy the bull$h!t that just because it has rihanna and kayne in it that it's supposedly good.

i get that he needs newer appeals, and tbh i guess guess acts can help it sell but lets face it, in this track, rihanna and kayne steal the track, it be better if he had more of a main part, they should be guest acts, not limelight stealers. he should make his tracks his own like he used to, not let other people take over.

What really annoys me about this is how Jay-Z keeps saying "sup" whenever Rihanna starts to sing, it's quite annoying

brilliant album cover, i hope the tracks are up to the standard of the cover (as in better than run this town).

I wouldn't hold your breath. He's hardly likely to have picked one of the weaker songs for lead single...

AMAZING cover.

tbh im sure there will be tracks i like anyway, worth buying just for the cover though, this is gonna be vinyl purchase i think.
That cover is horrible. I've only heard 'Run This Town' from this era so far and I hate it. Shame he's gone down the Kanye route.
How is the cover 'horrible'? And what exactly is 'the Kanye route'?

What's the back meant to show? Lots of instruments tacked together? I don't really see the point in that at all.

The Kanye route is when you have Kanye on a song when he's not really needed. Mr. Hudson did it, Keri Hilson did it and now Jay-Z has and I don't understand why.

it's meant to show how the album is built up on live instruments, unlike the majority of hip hop albums (especially these days, and other jay-z albums).

and i agree with the kayne thing.

Maybe on Hudson but I think he made a great addition to Hilson's track.

You do realize he and Kanye West are really close though? Kanye West worked as a producer for Jay-Z long before he even released his debut album, producing some of his most critically acclaimed songs. Jay-Z pretty much gave him his start, really. And he gave Rihanna her start by signing her to Def Jam. I could understand if he really didn't know either of them and just wanted him on the track for the sake of it being them, but I really doubt that.

Run This Town is only pretty good. Nothing amazing which is disappointing. Still, American Gangster was a great album, so I still think this could be noiceee.
