I know. I was joking.

Well i for one wish Vera Lynn would get to #1 in the album charts. Im only 22 so obviously wasn't around in 1939, but seeing my nan's reaction when i told her Vera Lynn is back in the charts made my day. She's an icon for a generation and to dismiss music for those people - in my view - is bang out of order.

And Vera's music should be heard for today's generation as well. I wish people didn't look down their noses to a type of music just because their not interested in it

It's such a shame that Jay-Z is in the lead now, I really wanted Sugababes to get it :(
But i don't think it's sensible to back homegrown artists if the song is crap (or inferior to past hits). I back artists if their songs/performances are consistently good (Rihanna, Leona, Christina, Bey). I would never buy a song just because the artist is british.

Yes but the americans are backing their own artists even if they are crap and they ARE NOT buying music by foreign artists even if it's a masterpiece....

Just look at what happened to Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue , Steps , Five , Blue, Westlife.... they all had amazing songs to offer but still they were completely ignored by american radio :arrr: because of their nationality....

i wonder why brits shouldn't do the same....

Also, i'd like to add that lot's of British artists are huge in Australia. Leona, Lily Allen, Mika and Alesha Dixon have all had top 10 hits in Oz. I know Australia isn't exactly as big as US but it's still a big-ish market.

The number 1 selling album in Australia sells around 5 to 6 k. I rest my case.....

The Aussie market is pathetically small.

It's a huge country, but only 20million people live there. Selling a 100k down under is good.

The supermarkets don't sell CD's over there either, and the population is so spread out i'd guess only about half the population had easy access to legal music.

Only half the population have access? Hello iTunes :P

Having said that, if you're massive in Australia then you're set. Funhouse has done about 650,000 and was #4 last Sunday. If you can get 3 or 4 Top 20 hit singles of an album here, you can expect to sell at least 200,000. So that's not bad. Obviously it's not a patch on the US or even UK but it can still be lucrative if you've got a solid album.

Because two wrongs don't make a right.... and Leona did extremely well, so they aren't completely prejudiced.

Why should we stoop to their level? I'm my own person and will buy music whether it's good. That's what music is suppose to be about.

I remember there were tons of UK artists breaking through America in the 80s (although i was born in 94 :P ) and to a lesser extent, many britons are breaking through America today. Adele, Wino, Duffy, Joss Stone, Lily Allen, james blunt, Dido, Leona, Coldplay, Jay Sean and Snow Patrol are all big in America and have had some sort of great success over there in recent years.

Also, i'd like to add Kylie had two top 10 hits in the US and at least one big-selling album as well. Blue never bothered, Westlife are laughable (THEY RELEASE COVERS) but i don't know what happened to Five/Steps. Remember though, Spice Girls and S Club 7 were big in the US around that time anyway.

And you can't exactly call them total snobs when they love Susan Boyle more than we do

All i know with Steps in the US was that the Step One album spent 5 weeks in the top 100 - don't know where it got to though and i think Tragedy got to #18 - i could be wrong though
Good to see Sugababes doing so well! And Jay Z once again scores a hit on the merits of his collaborators. Congrats Jay!

Leona only did well because she was backed by Simon Cowell and Clive Davis...

'One for sorrow' barely reached the Hot 100...i guess it was number 81....

that's all the success they had in the US.....

And she's a talented singer, with a damn good song...We're not talking about who the artists are backed by, we are talking about the country's prejudices, and them not buying it "even if it's a masterpiece". Yet they bought Leona's song (which was a masterpiece...) and she got to #1. So I don't think they are entirely prejudiced.
SOF is Still there. Go Away

ok but it's only 1 example....

i was saying in a general sense: british artists have more chance to be hit by a car than to become successful in the US... :o

US radio only supports american artists as opposed to British radio which plays US artists more than 50% of the time...

and don't start mentioning Leona caus it's an exception... and Jay Sean was only played because of his Lil'Wayne collaboration... :arrr:

they ARE NOT buying music by foreign artists even if it's a masterpiece....

I gave you an example against your statement. There are some exceptions, and I do agree that British artists are becoming big in America, but I don't think it's just because Americans are blinkered to only American music. Lots of British artists don't get any promotion in US, and lots of the music just isn't up to it. I think, like everyone else, Americans buy music based on their tastes, and if they don't hear the music (due to lack of promotion) or they just don't like the song, they're not going to buy it. Not because the artist is British.
