Does anyone know what the current record for the most weeks on the chart in a calender year?

I believe Oasis may hold the rcord with a 100+ weeks in the 1990's.

Lady Gaga must be close to that figure and Michael Jackson must have notched up 80 or so weeks this year.

no, because an artist can have more than 1 song inside the chart in the same week, each counting as a seperate week.

Bill Haley spent 110 weeks on the chart in 1956, I dunno wheather this is still the record though, Oasis may have beaten it.

Ah I see, thought the OP meant from 1 single sorry :)

Someone on another site posted this today

I think Lady Gaga may have broken another record this week. She has spent 135 weeks in the top 75 so far in 2009 - This beats the previous record set by Oasis, of 134 weeks in 1996. She has also spent a further 5 weeks in the top 75 as a featured artist with "Wale" with the song "Chillin", bringing her total to 140! With 6 top 75 entries this week she is sure to add to this total by the end of 2009.

Yep, Oasis did hold the record - mainly because Creation re-released all their Definitely Maybe singles around the time of the Morning Glory success and allowed fans to get 3 for a tenner instead of the £12 cover price. God...remember when CD singles were £3.99 each kids? Gaga's run is impressive (albeit not uncommon with downloads) as there was no conscious re-releasing (mind you, there's no physical product). I guess this mean's Oasis will forever hold the record for physical single weeks in a calendar year.

How do you differentiate physical weeks and download weeks?

All of Lady GaGa's singles were physically released as far as I can see, sure the download would massively outsell them but chart weeks are combined (since 2005 or whatever).

I know what you mean though getting off your bottom to go to a shop and pay £3.99 for a CD single with four tracks on it is more impressive than paying 79p for a download but back then it was pre-MP3 and there was no illegal downloading so it's swings and roundabouts if you ask me.

I'm sure LOTS of people have an illegal GaGa song or 4 on their iPods - with Oasis you could tape the song off the radio or a friends CD single and that was it, even CD Burners weren't commonplace until around 1998-2000 (and even then some CD players didn't play copies) so if you wanted the song you HAD to go to the shop to buy it.

Oh how times have changed, if you wanted a single that had been out of the charts for a few months back then you were buggered unless, like oasis, they were re-released or reissued by the record company now obviously we can cherry pick virtually every major song from the past 50 years!

Hoorah!

Thanks for the information so far.

Any ideas how many weeks MJ has had in the top 75 this year?

Not sure about MJ, 'single wise' (don't really follow singles, sorry), but with regard to albums (which is surely more 'impressive' ;) ), I have the following information;

MJ weeks on UK Album Chart 2009

Top 50 = 107 weeks

Top 75 = 145 weeks

Top 100 = 170 weeks

This is up to and including charts dated 29th November.

Lady GaGa:

Just Dance - 21

Poker Face - 32

Paparazzi - 17

LoveGame- 8

Chillin' - 3

Bad Romance - 5

Telephone - 1

Total - 87 top 40 weeks, if including Chillin'.

I did that before I read top 75 discussion but there we go.

Most weeks spent on the Top 75 in a calendar year: 134 by Oasis (1996).

^^According to Wikipedia, i.e. take with a huge load of salt. :P

On my little Excel spreadsheet, I counted 43 positions from 76-100, and 137 total weeks top 100, so that would give MJ 94 weeks top 75 this year.

Bumped up to 110 top 75 and 159 top 100 if you count 4 The Jackson 5 singles and 2 The Jacksons singles.

HMV in London was amazing in the 1990s/early 00s, it had an absolutely huge section of back catalogue CD singles. I remember going there in 2001 time and finding some mid-90s singles. Was great.

Yep oasis held the record with 134, it was in the back of an old guinness hit singles. They also managed 130ish concurrently. Gaga is sure to beat this year if not already thanks to the masses of cherrypicks this week and bringing bad romance forward. She should be so proud! Rihanna came close last year with her re-reloaded extravaganza, 129 weeks as I noted at the time. Beyonce has had a huge year and mj just by sheer number of songs but not close to gaga in terms of weeks this calender year
