Chipmunk.

I wouldn't say Chippy relies on big names...

He's collaborated with the obviously MASSIVE names Loick Essien, Emeli Sandé, Dayo Olatunji and Talay Riley. Okay, so he got a top 100 hit with his album track he did with N-Dubz... but that wasn't a single.

I think the point being made was that without the more commerical voices of the featuring artists doing the choruses, it would be hard for his music to crossover into the mainstream. Nothing wrong with it of course, he writes and produces some excellent pop/urban music.

I think there are way too many collaborations these days. Anyone remember when artists could produce stuff on their own. Granted its mainly rap/r 'n b that does this but if you look at Kanye West and Justin Timberlake, they've had 3 no.1s each and yet technically only one each for themselves (and even in JT's case that was a collaboration). I get sick of seeing the same artists all over everything.

I just remembered something!

How the hell can everyone have forgotten THE definitive answer to this so far?

AKON.

He's had a ridiculously high number of hits in such a short space of time, and all but maybe 5 or 6 are either aa a featured artist or with 1 or more featured artists.

Check his chart career, taken from last week's BJSCST:

Akon

2009 61 We Don't Care

2009 01 Sexy Chick (David Guetta Feat. Akon)

2010 33 Shut It Down (Pitbull Feat. Akon)

That's missing 'Oh Africa' (feat. Keri Hilson) + all of his hits from 76-100. 5-6 years, and he's built up THIS chart career. Crazy.

For me it has to be Akon. Not many of his own singles I've liked but the following are, imo, brilliant:

Gwen Stefani featuring Akon - The Sweet Escape

Lady GaGa featuring Colbie O' Donis & Akon - Just Dance

David Guetta featuring Akon - Sexy Bitch

Pitbull featuring Akon - Shut It Down

Oh, Brayfish beat me to it. :P

I actually forgot about Akon. He is defitenaly Mr Rent-A-Rapper isnt he?

Seriously, I wonder how much a featuring artist makes off a record? Surely with the amount paid to the main artist, composers and record company it can't be much? Mr Hudson probably lives in a bedsit somewhere.

apparently he still has to use public transport to get about.

Shows that he is stone broke then.

I know this is a different subject matter from the topic, but I can't imagine many artists living a rock and roll lifestyle. A lot of these rappers probably gain money in "other ways"

Poor Keri :snif:

People don't forget 'Mean Muggin' (Hey Now)' by X-Zibit which she features :kink:

Timbaland also has never had a hit on his own...

Akon doesn't count either... he has had Top 10 hits without featuring anybody... he just happens to feature on alot more too...

Yeah I wouldn't count Akon, as a lot of his biggest successes have been with him as the main artist - Lonely, Beautiful, Right Now, Don't Matter, Smack That etc.

how about nate dogg? All he has done has been featured on people records

Warren G Ft. Nate Dogg - Regulate (No. 5)

Dr Dre Ft. Snoop Dogg,Nate Dogg & Kurupt - The next episode (No.3)

Mos Def Ft. Pharaoh Monch & Nate Dogg - Oh No (No.24)

Snoop Dogg Ft. Nate Dogg, Master P, Butch Cassidy, Goldie Loc & Tray Deee - Lay Low (No.8)

Ludacris Ft. Nate Dogg - Area Codes (No.25)

Xzibit Ft. Nate Dogg - Multiply (No.39)

50 Cent Ft. Nate Dogg - 21 Questions (No.6)

Houston Ft. Chingy, Nate Dogg & I-20 - I like that (No.11)

And come to think about it: Ludacris

As a featuring artist:

Missy Elliott Ft. Ludacris & Trina - One minute man (No. 10)

Mariah Carey Ft. Da Brat, Shawnna, 22 & Ludacris - Loverboy (No. 7)

Missy Elliott Ft. Ludacris - Gossip Folks (No.9)

Usher Ft. Ludacris & Lil' Jon - Yeah (No. 1)

Lil' Jon Ft. Usher & Ludacris - Lovers and friends - (No. 10)

Ciara Ft. Ludacris - Oh (No.4)

Jamie Foxx Ft. Ludacris - Unpredictable (No.16)

Fergie Ft. Ludacris - Glamorous (No. 6)

Solo

What's your fantasy (with shawnna) - (No.19)

Area Codes (with Nate Dogg) - (No.25)

Rollout (My Business) - (No.20)

Saturday (Oooh Oooh) (with Sleepy Brown) - (No.31)

Stand Up (With shawnna) - (No.14)

Get Back / Number one spot - (No.30)

Runaway Love (with Mary J Blige) - (No.52)

Yeah I wouldn't count Akon, as a lot of his biggest successes have been with him as the main artist - Lonely, Beautiful, Right Now, Don't Matter, Smack That etc.

I agree, I think it's a different thing here. It's probably the fact that Akon appears on the track, rather than him not being big enough to get a hit on his own, that helps all these songs become top 75 hits. Which would suggest he's actually an influencial feature, rather than relying on them.

I think Lil Wayne and Lil Jon are the best example of this here. They're too urban for this market, but people can handle a featuring credit from them.

There are certainly artists who do better when they have featuring artists. Keri Hilson; Ciara; Timbaland; Tinchy Stryder; Chipmunk etc.

As mentioned earlier; KERI HILSON.

Although, it's more so down to the fact she is actually $h!t. :)

Cannot believe anyone hasn't mentioned 3OH!3, they're the biggest case!!!!!

They got a #3 because Katy Perry was featuring on it. They've tried SO many times to make Don't Trust Me a hit and it hasn't cracked the Top 20 and they're trying again for the 4th time it must be! Let it die! You'd think they had no other songs.

Is that true?

Maybe the reason 'Don't Trust Me' has never been a hit in the UK because it's crap? Mind you, now that they scored a massive hit with (the far superior) 'Starstrukk', 'DTM' will probably go top 10 this time round.

Jay-Z

Sean Paul

Ludacris

Kelly Llorenna

Pharrell Williams

Trina

Missy Elliott

Lil'Kim

Tina Cousins

poor Kelly :( thank goodness Tell It To My Heart gave her that elusive completely solo top ten hit!

Yep it's true. I mean, I haven't heard their album but surely there is another track they could release? Show's how happy they are with their own album that they chose to release the same song time and time again. And no I don't think it will go Top 10, it hasn't got Katy Perry (essentially the reason SS got Top 10) and it was big on Radio the last time round, so everyone will be sick of it tbh. Everyone who will download it has downloaded it already and they haven't got the delusional stans like JLS/Girls Aloud that will download the song over and over to get it Top 5.
