Suprised this hasn't been mentioned yet! Despite all the sometimes rather scary opposition from the republicans (someone actually said they'd rather their broken foot WASN'T covered by their health insurance than it being included in their taxes) I'm especially glad for President Obama that this went through as he needed a step in the right direction and get towards shutting people who think he can 'change' everything in five minutes that are 'disappointed' by him. Next hopefully he can do something about the Middle East and of course Guantanimo (sp?) Bay which both of course will take some time and more time than he seems to think they will.

Saw this on the news yesterday. Excellent and hope Obama's approval ratings soar after this.

There's a hell of a lot of hostility in many States towards this though, so this is NOT going to go through without a lot of grief... Texas has already petitioned their opposition to it, and many Americans, buying into the propaganda of the Republicans, are hostile to what they regard as "Socialised Healthcare"... I've been arguing with my American "Friends" about it on Facebook.. They're banging on about "Socialist America", and likening it to the USSR, but then when I pipe up and say "well, we've had the NHS in UK for over 60 years, is UK anything like the USSR???". I also pointed out the Bail Out of the banking system which was almost certainly an example of "Socialism" also in that respect seeing as how it's also a case of direct Govt intervention (which is their big problem it seems), they seem a bit reticent to actually address these points and continued ranting about it all being "unconstitutional"... Why the fukk are some Americans such complete r*t**** on this issue.....?

I think I'm the only other American that is for this bill passing.

Quite why do the vast majority of Americans equate basic humanity with socialism? I mean, I'd go for that definition too, except I don't consider socialism to be a dirty word...

Why is it the US public are so against Health Care reforms? Sure the NHS isn't perfect, but at least it's free and those bellow the poverty line can get access to health care, as i understand it, unless you can afford health insurance or your job provides it you go without in the states. :( Thats just not right/fair.

Sure, i wanna go private the minute i can afford it, but until then i'm content that i can get sorted for free.

[i say free, but obv i pay Taxes/NI which pay for it]

To the majority of thick headed, pig-sh!t ignorant Americans Socialism = The USSR, China, North Korea, etc.... Which is just utter bullsh!t.... Besides though, the USSR did a lot of bad things yeah, but, actually, had very, very good healthcare programmes, which, oddly enough many of the Former Soviet countries aren't exactly in a rush to dismantle...

Here's the funny thing though. I have American friends who live in the UK, and well, they actually LOVE the NHS...  Seriously.. They're always saying to me "Jesus, I wish we had your NHS back in the States...". I dont know of a single American who's left the US to come to live and work in the UK or Europe who's actually complained about having free healthcare, it only seems to be the ones still in the US who bitch about the idea.....

I think most Americans aren't AGAINST it but alot of people dislike Obama and no matter what he does they will dislike it because he was the one to pass it. I think the other percentage are scared because it's a change which is acceptable.

LOL the ad at the bottom of the page is Obama in surgical wear and it says "Stop Obama". Really? Really?

I just wonder how much of the opposition to Obama is just based on "good old fashioned" racism tbh..... <_<

Mind you, they knobbled Hillary Clinton when she tried to get a bill passed as well....

And which state has the highest proportion of the population without health insurance? Yes, Texas where just under 25% of people don't have insurance.

With Hillary I expect that was "good old fashioned" sexism.

Still I say well done to Obama for pulling this off so far.

As for the Republican states of America ... well they have always been 75-100 years behind the times so all Obama is doing is dragging the sexist, racist, homophobic, religious zealots by the knuckles into the 1950s.

Absolutely ridiculous that the most developed country on Earth have only brought in what should be a basic human right after so much klcking and screaming. Kudos to Obama. With this success, and the administration FINALLY calling out Israel on some of their $h!t, he's definitely living up to my expectations.

What are you on about? Luxembourg has had public sponsored health care for years.

AHEM tyler did you not see my enthralled facebook status? hdu

but yeah, a lot of the hatred towards this bill is based on racism and fear/propaganda etc. people can be serious idiots in america at times, even a bunch of my liberal/democratic friends have bought into the republican propaganda which is quite sad. i think once this starts to go into effect and we notice the changes people will actually realize it's not going to kill us all. i really hope this helps obama's approval ratings as well, it's a shame how many people are against him now. he's done a few things i'm not for (and his complete disregard for the gay rights movement can be kind of upsetting), but i've realized he's had WAY bigger issues to deal with and he's the right guy for the job. he's definitely not doing america any HARM at least, lord knows what a mccain administration would be like.

i really don't know much about the health care bill tbh except that it's a step towards universal health care. the only things i worry about is that because we passed this, people are going to be lazy when it comes to making universal health care because we already have this. also, i'm pretty sure there was some semi anti-abortion legislation that passed with it from what i heard? something about federal funding. i hope it's not true, especially because obama has been so liberal with abortion in the past / during his campaign. it'd be a shame if he started to try and appeal to the few pro-'life' democrats. it makes me wonder what other parts of the bill were tweaked to appeal to more conservative liberallzz. ugh.

Pretty much the nail on the head mate... They didn't expect Hillary Clinton to be intelligent, resourceful, clever or have a mind of her own.... How VERY dare she actually want to take an active role....

Shame that these days, she seems to be a bit of a sell-out...

Have you actually pointed out to them the fact that the UK has the NHS and well, we've certainly benefitted enormously out of it....?

I read the following on the internet during my lunch break and had to post this here:

Quarter of Republicans think Barack Obama is 'the Antichrist'

One in four Republicans in America thinks President Barack Obama "may be the Antichrist," according to a startling new poll.

Daily Telegraph.co.uk

By Nick Allen in Los Angeles

Published: 7:00AM GMT 25 Mar 2010

The survey showed that 24 per cent of Republican respondents agreed with the statement that the president might be the Antichrist, and 38 per cent thought he was "doing many of the things Hitler did."

According to the poll 67 per cent of Republicans thought President Obama was a socialist, 57 per cent thought that he was secretly a Muslim, 42 per cent believed he was "racist," and 61 per cent thought that he wants to abolish gun ownership.

It also found that 51 per cent of Republicans thought that he wants to turn over the US to a single world government, and 22 per cent believed "he wants the terrorists to win."

The poll was carried out by Harris Interactive in an online survey of 2,320 adults.

Overall, including Democrat respondents, it found that 40 per cent thought President Obama was a socialist, 32 per cent that he was a Muslim, and 25 per cent that he was not born in the United States.

The poll was carried out to measure extreme views following the publication of Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America, a book by John Avlon.

Respondents were asked to say whether they believed various extreme statements about President Obama were true or false.

Mr Avlon said: "These new numbers are shocking but not surprising. This poll should be a wake-up call to all Americans about the real costs of using fear and hate to pump up hyper-partisanship."

I'm gobsmacked by this poll result. It hardly paints the people of America in a great light does it?

I thought April Fool's Day was next week

It's good to see the Bill passed, as it's been a long time coming. Although from what I've heard of the bill it's not completely 'Free Healthcare,' but rather baby steps towards actually getting free healthcare. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I'm going to America to study for a year, so free healthcare would be dandy if I could get it.
