Back in 1997 Oasis sold 696,000 copies of 'Be Here Now' in one week. Is it reasonable to expect any album to beat this total? I believe Coldplay got closest but were still around 200k off. In fact the only way I can see another album selling 500k in a week is:

Lady GaGa releases the follow-up up to 'The Fame' two weeks before Christmas either this year or next. Preceding it is a HUGE #1 single (may possibly have to be bigger than Poker Face) with another single with an epic Telephone-style video lined up for the new year.

Thoughts?

How much did Arctic Monkeys sell with 'Whatever People Say I Am'?

I do believe it iwll get beaten. MAYBE, just MAYBE by Kings Of Leon with their next album, if they have something as epic as 'Sex On Fire' or 'Use Somebody'...

Lady GaGa doesn't strike me as the sort of artist who'd shift 700k of albums in a week, it's usually British indie/rock acts or hyped Reality albums that command those types of opening sales...

I'm not sure that it will be beaten to be honest, it's a hell of a tall order

That 696,000 total from Oasis was achieved in only 3 days, as it was a Thursday release. Can't see that ever being beaten!

364,000 copies of 'Whatever People Say I Am', highest for a new act.

i can see 696,00 being beaten in a week but not in three days like Oasis

Until it was beaten by Leona and then Susan Boyle.

I agree with Jonjo - if they open up with another Sex On Fire and release at Christmas, I think KOL could get 700k+ in one week.

Hmmm... possibly but it would have to be a December release and even then I somehow doubt it. They would need it not to leak but that's near impossible if you're releasing tracks as singles beforehand -_-

I can't see it ever being beaten. There's nobody around at the moment who are even vaguely as huge as Oasis were back then - being popular is not enough, you need enough obsessives to rush out to buy it on day one coupled with it being the type of act who could garner lots of newspaper coverage at the same time. Amy Winehouse could do the latter but I'm not sure she'd have the immediate sale factor at all.

Even though Oasis sold 696,000 in three days, the albums market has changes drastically over the last 13 years. Back in 1997 album sales were huge compared to what they are now.

Personally, I doubt it'll ever be beaten - many will come close, indeed Coldplay 'Viva La Vida and Death And All His Friends' sold extremely well in its first week iirc. Yet even they only managed over 500k (?). If Coldplay couldn't achieve it in 2008, who will achieve this looking into the future? I just don't see it happening because we've now become a country obsessed with cherry picking tracks on iTunes. If 'Be Here Now' was released today with all the hype surronding the album just like that of 1997, it still wouldn't sell anywhere near 696,000 now. Instead, all the albums tracks would be charting seperately in the singles chart. Something that was unheard of 13 years ago.

Isn't Coldplay's next album supposed to be their last? I think I read somewhere they would release it this year then retire. If so, that could be enough to beat it? Most likely not though. Otherwise I (sadly) don't see that record being broken anytime soon. Oh, actually maybe a Take That / Robbie reunion album? The 2 TT albums since their comeback have had huge one week sales, maybe the reunion would be enough to push it over the 700k mark.

I don't see any pop artist managing it - like Dandy says, to be so front-loaded you'd need a large die-hard fanbase who will camp outside record stores for the Monday morning opening - which stereotyping a little, tends to be the indie/rock acts.

And right now, there aren't any indie/rock acts at the same level Oasis were then. Coldplay are the closest, but a lot of the fanbase is also comprised of the dad brigade, who aren't going to be hardcore obsessives.

I don't thin anything will ever receive enough hype for it to be beaten really. 'Be Here Now' was one of the most, if not the most, anticipated albums of all time. No act at the moment would do it. You look at the hype that Susan Boyle, Leona, Take That and Coldplay have had in recent years but they've still not got close.

I'd also not forget 'Be Here Now' was released in August, so even if someone does release on a Monday at the end of November and manage to beat it, it still won't be anywhere near as big an achievement.

I think the most hype I've ever seen around an album is 'X&Y' and that sold 464k first week in the summer. If they couldn't do it then when they really were about the most popular and marketable act in the world I don't see how anyone could now.

In the current climate the only act I can see challenging Oasis' sales in a week is (as Pablo Honey suggested) a Take That / Robbie reunion album .... especially if it released in November (2011) preceded by a single that is as good as Angels meets Back For Good meets Feel meets Rule The World; off the back of a reunion documentary and Audience With ... show on ITV on a weekend just after an episode of the X-Factor.

Album sales have declined hugely since then.... I don't see anything that big coming. Lady Gaga is a single seller not an album seller. Remember that it took the 'so epic' album The Fame a year to break a milion sales on the back of some of the most succesful singles of the year worldwide and so much promo and videos and ... fame. I don't think she has anyway to promote her work more than she already does. Honestly 700 k in a week? I like Gaga but I feel the fame charting together with TFM is cheating! The fame would never have sold 1.6 mil on its own and the fame monster will probably sell another 1.2 to 1.6 million... Jls will manage that also, as will Buble, as will the Peas. I don't think x factor can achieve this either... If Leona couldn't sell half that amount.... Alexandra is not even close... Banana Joe is out of the question. We may have records in singles sales though...

Also: a TT-Robbie collaboration (hopefully NOT a full reunion) will never reproduce Angels, and will probably burn most of Robbies strong points... Considering they have many fans in common 500K in the UK would exeed expectations...

Unfortunately I can see Girls Alouds comeback (that's if they do comeback) being really big. Maybe a posthumous MJ album comprising of all 'new' songs. The TT reunion like previously stated, Coldplay again maybe, I could see Oasis beating it if they comeback i a few years with an amazing album, KOL like previously stated, JLS' fanbase has grown so they could do well with their next album. TBH though they'd all need to be released in the X Factor season with an X Factor performance.
