And this is with a 70-75% turnout, can you imagine the sh!t-storm if it had been 80 or 90%.... So, the politicians and the Media get us all hyped up and persuade us all to go out and vote, well, errr, except quite a few actually COULDN'T because of the stupid, Victorian method of voting in this country.... I mean, seriously, WHAT THE FUKK???? Voters being turned away from polling stations, Polling stations running out of ballot papers (I mean, how, HOW does that happen anyway????), hundreds of registered voters names "missing" from lists...... What the hell is this, the UK or Zimbabwe.....? Or Florida 2000....?? Our work patterns our very way of living our LIVES has changed somewhat in the past 150 years, I really dont think that it's unreasonable to expect the voting system to bloody well "move with the times".. Some bod on the news this morning was telling us that we had to "understand" that the voting system was set up during the Victorian era.... Err, okay, well we dont fukkin' well LIVE in the "Victorian Era" anymore, we live in the 21st Century mate..... The UK voting system clearly needs to get with the program because what happened last night was a fukkin' disgrace and an embarrassment in what is supposedly one of the most mature democracies in Western Europe.... It's clear to me what happened, these tossers ASSUMED a low turn-out.... Roundabout 50-60% I would guess..?? What an incredibly foolish assumption to make as it turns out.... You should ALWAYS assume that turn-out be 100% when you're talking about a vote to determine the future of the bloody country, surely????? There were some very close votes last night, some very slim majorities, I think it would be interesting to find out if one or two of those narrow majorities were in constituencies where problems occured..... If so, the ballot simply has to be done again.... Simple as...
May 7, 201015 yr They are laying blame in a lot of places on the Students. Fair do's students were to blame for the SNP getting into power, but it's unfair to lump all f*** ups on us. Especially as the Scottish polls ran fine this time. Nothing to do with the student's who elected the SNP, we can cope fine with a high turnout, we just have thick voters who vote on one word. Independence.

Disagree totally Polls were open for 15 hrs, if people want to leave things to the last minute when they have had 15 hrs to vote it is their tough $h!t if they miss out, no one has such a busy life that they can't find any time at all between 7am and say 8.30pm in which to vote, I blame solely those who left everything till the last minute. For those few that can't find the time then there was always postal votes, no excuses. There was one stupid bint who was on BBC saying she drove past at 6 and there was a queue so she came back at 7 and there was still one and drove past again at 8 so she came back at 9ish, the stupid mare should have been patient and queued at 6 or 7, her fault she missed out No excuse for running out of ballot papers but in terms of the queues and people missing the cut that was their own fault
May 7, 201015 yr someone sounds bitter that he is proven wrong! (craig) LOL not at all  Given the votes were in inner cities it is more than likely 90% of them were for Labour so it is Labour that lost out by them not voting not conservatives
May 7, 201015 yr And why would students be to blame. I'm a student and I got up at 7 and had voted by half 9. I wasn't exactly holding anyone up. My polling station happened to be across the road from where I live and I could see people going in and out all day and there was never a horrendous queue. Anyone showing up after 8:30 obviously didn't want to vote bad enough. No one works 15 hours straight and there's always lunch breaks anyway. 15 hours is ample time and its never been a problem before.

If so, the ballot simply has to be done again.... Simple as... If "the bod on the news" was the geezer on the results programme last night his whole point was that the system was antiquated. The fact that it dates bak to Victorian times was being given as a reason, not an excuse. I've thought for some time that we should consider printing ballot papers on demand in the Polling Station. That means less wasted paper when unused ballot papers are thrown away and no risk of running out. One of the areas mentioned was Sheffield, specifically Nick Clegg's seat. However, if the problem occurred in Sheffield Central as well there could be a challenge as Labour only beat the Lib Dems by 165 votes.

Anyone showing up after 8:30 obviously didn't want to vote bad enough. No one works 15 hours straight and there's always lunch breaks anyway. 15 hours is ample time and its never been a problem before. They were trying to claim - at least in Sheffield - that a lot of students had turned up without their polling card. That's a pathetic excuse. In some areas, there's always a rush in the last hour or two but it's never caused a problem before. A lot of people work too far from their home to be able to vote at lunchtime so it's often a case of voting before going in to work or after work. A lot of people like to wait until after their evening meal before going out to vote. Anybody turning up at 9.30 is entitled to expect to be able to vote. OTOH, if someone aims to get there just before 10 (some people have this weird desire to be the last person to vote) and they miss out, that's just tough.

You should ALWAYS assume that turn-out be 100% when you're talking about a vote to determine the future of the bloody country, surely????? Absolutely. If you send out an invite to a party to 10 people, you don't throw your hands up in the air when 6 turn up and say "Oh I don't have room, I wasn't expecting you all!" It's utter madness. If they advertise the polling stations as being open until 10, how can you then turn around and say "oh it's past 8.30 you're too late". What complete bilge. And why would students be to blame. I'm a student and I got up at 7 and had voted by half 9. I wasn't exactly holding anyone up. No one works 15 hours straight and there's always lunch breaks anyway. 15 hours is ample time and its never been a problem before. I think the argument they were using wasn't so much that students were voting, but that students were apparantly turning up without their polling cards, which added to the queues and delays as they took longer to be processed.
May 7, 201015 yr People in the Sheffield Hallam constituency had been queueing for 3 hours or more when they were turned away, so its not as if they left it until the last minute... they went in PLENTY of time. It's just that the system is so archaic it resulted in a farce. I wouldn't be surprised if the big Sheffield student constituencies were contested tbh - separate queues for students and residents with students forced to the back of the queue apparently. That's got to be damaging for Lib Dems - especially when in my constituency Labour won with a majority of less than 150.
May 7, 201015 yr What a joke of a thread. FFS, I voted at 07:11 Hours in the morning, yet later that same evening in my same poll station the queues went up to 40/50 with a 20/25 minute waiting time to vote. Those people had 15 Hours, and the option of Postal Voting. Yet failed to vote = Pathetic. It's like going boo hoo its not fair when you fail to get a ticket for a sell out gig/music festival because you can't be bothered to get on the phone/internet as soon as the lines open.. And as for those students who failed to turn up with their Polling cards..... oh for crying out loud. Pathetic, just pathetic. This thread is a perfect reflection of society today where too many people blame anybody else but themselves for their own mistakes. So no doubt these students will get jobs in the Banking Sector in the City when they graduate.

It's pretty obvious from watching the news that by 7.30 the situation has just spiralled and for those with jobs and things to do, 7.30 is HARDLY leaving it until the last minute. OH and the polling card DOES actually say you don't need to take it. Students are first-time voters... if the card says you don't need it, why would they take it? I'd say stop taking swipes at students and look at the bigger picture.

The only people I have real sympathy for are the hard working parents who've been working 12 Hour shifts, and then have to get dinner for their children. Oh and as for taking side swipes of students, well I guess they much rather be able to vote by texting by mobile as they do for more important issues like voting in a one hour window for X-Factor, Britain's Got Talent; Big Brother ..... In the words of Gordon Brown .... GET REAL!

Infact, they're SO apathetic they were queueing for up to four hours in my constituency. It's exactly your attitude which had students relegated to second-class electorates in Sheffield. I voted in the last 5 hours of the window because I had other things to do... are you saying now that I should have skipped lectures, interviews and meetings to make sure I didn't clash with the crowd of employed parents?

In the words of Gordon Brown .... GET REAL! I really don't get where you're coming from here. If you turned up at a shop to buy something two hours before the shop closed for the day you'd expect to be able to go in, find what you want and pay for it. Going out to vote at 8.00 should be no different. I find it hard to accept that anyone can't find the time to go out and vote. But that's based on the assumption that you shouldn't have to spend more than 10-15 minutes maximum at the polling station. And why should people use a postal vote? Because of the Bank Holiday anyone using the post rather than handing it in at the Council offices would have had to post it by last Friday to be totally confident that it would arrive on time. Why should they have to make up their mind almost a week before everyone else?

May 7, 201015 yr Were you in Sheffield Central? If any of these incidents happened in Central then there may well be a case for calling for the election to be re-run. I was indeed and I believe that possibility is being looked into - though from his Twitter our Lib Dem candidate appears to have admitted defeat.

I did not know lectures started at 7am in the morning. Sorry, but I voted first thing in the morning before I went to work, because I knew my poll station would be a lot more busier (which it was) in the evening after work. But I guess having a lie in is much more important for some students. ;)

In the words of Gordon Brown .... GET REAL!How f***ing dare you. Both Dundee constituencies and sizeable amount of North East Fife has students voting More so in Dundee West where i live during term time and where there is not one, but two reasonably sized uni's. So much so that we have quite a powerful vote in Dundee West, it's how the SNP won it at Holyrood. They went for the students. There were no issues at any polling station in scotland that we know of. So despite the Scottish Uni's being in exam period we managed to vote so don't blame the f***ing students. it's not our fault. We have lives and things to do as well. Oh and for the record, i had an exam today. Yesterday i got on a train and went back home to vote. I wasted 2hrs to go and vote because it was my first chance to, and yes i went home for the polling card.
