I agree with whoever said this is unfortunate timing due to picking one of the best top 10s of 2009.

I do love most of the songs in the current top 10 to a certain extent - I hate All Night Long, Good Times isn't brilliant but isn't bad either, the Leeds song is just wrong and shouldn't be there although it's not the worst song, and She's Always A Woman is pleasant enough if a bit boring. The other 6 I either love now or did love a few weeks back and still like them a lot now.

As for 2009, Bonkers was one of the best #1s of 09, as was Boom Boom Pow, and indeed Number 1 (brilliant top 3, still absolutely love all 3 a year on), We Made You is alright but not Eminem's best, Red is a bit boring, In For The Kill still sounds amazing (especially the Skream remix), Not Fair and Kiss Me Thru The Phone are still decent, Poker Face while a bit boring now is an undeniable classic (which can't really be said for any of the current top ten) and Fairytale was really good at the time and gets a bonus for being a foreign Eurovision winner making it a very unusual top ten hit.

So yes, I have to give in and go with 2009 this week, and perhaps 2009 on the whole was stronger than 2010 has been so far, I wouldn't say 2010 has been a bad year for chart music at all.

It does help that I tend to like urban music though :P

Isn't it weird how many of the 2009 top 10 are releasing new singles this week / in the near future - Dizzee - Dirtee Disco, BEP - Imma Be, Tinchy has a new song out soon, Eminem - Not Afraid and Lady GaGa - Alejandro. Okay, that's only 5, but still.

On the first few months i would say 2009 but with great tunes coming from Kylie and the scissor sisters etc in the coming months i have a feeling 2010 will be a better year.

:).

Overall, I'd say 2009 is far better than 2010 - even by just comparing the period of Jan-May.

2009 had Lady GaGa (x2), Lily Allen, Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal.

2010 has Owl City and B.o.B.

It's certainly been an odd year so far for UK no. 1 singles. 'In My Head', 'Pass Out', 'This Ain't A Love Song' and 'OMG' - I genuinely didn't think these three songs would go to no. 1 so it's really taken me by surprise that they were popular enough hit the top. Yet typically, in a 1999 stylee, it's the songs that peaked at no. 2 or no. 3 that seem to have had the long tern staying power which in the end means they will have the bigger selling singles. Going to no. 1 means absolutely nothing and 2010 is evident of this.

Indeed, it seems the sizeable 2/3/lower top 10 hits (IWEMA, Glee - DSB, Rude Boy, BedRock) seem to hang around longer and generally higher than most of this year's #1s (Fireflies is an exception)

They're both one of the better weeks of each year tbh. The top 2 and bottom 3 of 2009 are amazing, however. I only really dislike #3 and #7, on the other hand for 2010 i'd only rate #3 as good, #1, #2, #5, #6 and #9 are alright i suppose, the other 4 are awful, far worse than any of that in 2010. I do think that 2010 has been consistently poor musically, beating 2007 even?

Well, they've been the better songs which is quite ironic and very 1998/1999/2000. Like I say, the overall sales is what will count so while Scouting For Girls may have beaten Plan B to no. 1 (how they achieved it, I'll never know). However, 'She Said' could easily go on to sell up to 100k more than 'TAALS' by the end of 2010.

Yeah, that's true actually. Like how Plan B and Scouting For Girls released singles on the same week, and Scouting for Girls went to number-one, but Plan B stayed in the top 10 for longer, and has now beaten Scouting for Girls in sales. The same has happened with Diana Vickers and Chipmunk.

2010 there but 2009 was MUCH better overall. One of the best years for music in recent times imo.
