I Youtubed this song, and starting off thinking 'this is a pleasant enough reggae tune' - only to have my hopes shattered as yet another song is ruined by the inclusion of rap. :angry:

 

All I can do is add it to the ever-growing list of recent songs that I *would* have bought, if not for that. :(

 

It's all very well record companies believing they have to include rap to sell to the American market, but they seem blind to the commercial advantages of having a non-rap version *as well* - sales would be combined for chart purposes, and they might well find such versions are actually preferred by the wider market!

Travie McCoy is Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes. He's always been a rapper. No idea why he changed the last letter of his first name though. Bruno Mars who does the chorus on this song is the same guy from B.o.B's Nothin' On You.

 

Also, I'm not quite sure what you were expecting from a song titled 'Billionaire' - money is the central theme of about 95% of hip hop songs.

Billionaire feels too much like a carbon copy of Nothin' On You to me - it doesn't seem new at all. It's a nice song but not exactly groundbreaking and far from the 'best number one of the decade'. That'd be Fireflies at the moment, Airplanes after this week or We No Speak Americano if it ever manages it (fingers crossed for next week).

 

A lot of this year's #1s have now grown very old for me, so I'm starting to see why a lot of people say it's been a really bad year for #1s, but I have at least liked every #1 bar Haiti and Guetta at some point (If anyone notices my ommission of CG, it has grown on me :P It's still the third worst #1 of the year after the previous 2 though) and 'Fireflies', 'Pass Out' and 'Nothin' On You' I still love to this day.

If 'Billionaire' doesn't get removed from iTunes then I reckon this will shoot up to no. 1 next week prior to its "official release". I think it's a brilliant track even if the lyrics are typically American (basketball, president, delegates - hardly representing British culture). At the same time Bruno Mars is the part of the producing team The Smeezingtons. Sugababes kind of 'opened' them as 'Get Sexy' and 'Wear My Kiss' are produced by Smeezingtons when they weren't that popular. Then we got Nothin On You by them and now 'Billionaire'. Bruno Mars also apparently produced 'Wavin Flag'.

When is Billionaire officially released?

 

Supposed to be Sunday 25th July though they will delete this comp today I'd imagine. It wouldnt surprise me if they bring it forward to tomorrow though. In a way I am praying they dont as I'd love Yolanda to do it next week (fingers crossed)
