They play She Said without rapping? How the hell does that work?

Well, most of the song is singing, so they play it normally. When it gets to the rap section, it's just the instrumental. But they cut out a few bars of the instrumental section, as it would be a long time without no vocals. The same method is used for California Gurls, Bad Boys, etc. I'll see if I can find it on youtube.

If we're talking about America, that makes no sense...

About 1 in 8 Americans are black, and therefore the main target audience for rap, therefore 7 in 8 are not. Surely then a song would have more crossover appeal, if it appealed to that 7/8th's *too*?

Don't white Americans listen to the radio, then? :P

Rap doesn't just appeal to black people, you know. I'm a casual rap fan, for example. A lot of "chavs" in this country probably only bought songs like Empire State of Mind, Love the Way You Lie, Airplanes, etc. for the rap. Whereas some people bought it for the female singing the chorus.

A song with a rap section simply adds to its target appeal, because some will like the singer and some will like the rapper. How could that make it sell less?

Bad Boys has a non-rap edit. I've heard it on my local station, and it's the version Alex sings live. :)

Yeah, that's what they play on Heart. I don't know if California Gurls, She Said, etc. have non-rap edits, or if it's the radio stations that edit the songs.

As far as I know, they don't have non-rap edits. Bad Boys has a middle 8, which some stations play instead of the rap (same with All Night Long).

Some songs (like California Gurls and Start Without You - I think) have no middle 8 and just a rap in the middle.

Becuase no white people like rap music....

Taio shot up to #113 now. Hopefully they dont delete it so DSWY can be number 1 when released :D!

High five! :D

I don't hear anything special with Dynamite. Just a standard-at-best Taio song.

I hate how any song that is really dancey is guaranteed to do well. It annoys me because 96.3% of the time, the lyrics are awful. Oh and btw I know SWY has pretty poor lyrics but it's got a great hook and vocal so :P.

I'm really liking Dynamite. I thought it was average when I first heard it, but after multiple listens it clicked with me. I'd much rather Alex got to #1 though.
WTF is happening. With Billionaire #11 and Dynamite at #110

Well, with All Night Long, there's the album version, which is Alex's vocals all the way through. The single version has the bridge replaced with Pitbull's rap verse, but the instrumental has also changed, as well as the introduction.

Another song I've heard on the radio with no rap in is I Like It.

They're on a compilation album.

I can't believe how well Billionaire is doing though. Do people go on iTunes and search for the song everyday, or something?

I'm still surprised the compilation is even still available, Billionnaire will be taken top 10 soon otherwise. Surely its only a matter of time? I reckon the label may just release the song now.

From the (soon to be removed) compilation:

if Billionaire is released on Sunday anyway I don't think it will be removed, will it?

Of course it will, as it's an unofficial compilation.

iTunes are notoriously fixing problems.

Ah, but I covered my ass on that, by saying 'blacks are the *main* target audience' for rap...

I never claimed that white people don't listen to *urban* music, but ISTM that, proportionately, *rap* appeals far more to blacks, than to whites.

JLS  to 6 :nocheer:

Eliza  to 8 :cheer:

I think if a song is mainly rapping, then it would be pointless makina a version without the rap, if there is enough part of the song that doesnt involve rapping, then they could release a version- there couldnt be a rap-free version of Airplanes or Billionaire though

why hasnt Itunes deleted the Billionaire and Dynamite yet? are they planning too?

both will be huge though- Billionaire isnt amazing, but its still pretty good and I would be fine with it at number 1

Dynamite is really good imo- sounds very anthemic and I will be literally flabbergasted if this doesnt get to number 1

Woop woop :kink:!

I do actually quite like Dynamite but it doesn't deserve to be as massive as you guys are all predicting it to be. SWY may be the cheese personified but my god is it amazing .

OMG.

Didn't notice Eliza reclimbing. GO GO GO :cheer: :w00t:

Ah, but I covered my ass on that, by saying 'blacks are the *main* target audience' for rap...

Completely wrong the main target audience of listeners and buyers of rap in America are middle class teen white boys.Sadly modern day rap is about very little beyond guns, girls, cars and cash and even black America has been turned off by this. From buying albums, downloading singles, concerts and merchandise it is a young white male audience that keeps the tills overflowing for music companies.

I think it's fair to say that rapping appeals mostly to young people, but I see 1,000 teenagers at school everyday, and, to be honest, I can't really see a particular gender, race or class that likes rapping more than another. With artists, yes, it seems more girls like Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah than boys do, but I think, overall, it's about equal.

I don't know about America though (but I'm going there on Monday, so bye bye English and European music :(). Their charts often seem more urban than ours, but they also have things like country music, which we don't get so much of here.
