I expect you'd struggle to find many people under the age of 25 who could name more than 3 Shakin' Stevens, Wizzard or Slade singles, no matter how popular they were at the time! I wonder if in 30/40 years time people will vividly recall all (or indeed any) of the 14 Westlife #1's!

The point I was trying to make is that their xmas classics keep these acts relevant to younger audiences, who in turn will be the older audiences of the future, and carry on taking these songs into the future with them. It's a great way to ensure that your memory lives on as an artist!

Pestlife have 14 #1's?????????? :o

Mind = Blown.

The amount of hate Glee gets in Chart Chat is irrational and confusing.

Mind = Blown.

The amount of hate Glee gets in Chart Chat is irrational and confusing.

they are getting hit after hit ripping off recent popular songs for the most part, it is not hard to understand why people don't like it who are intrested in the charts.

I prefer Glee doing the older songs as it refreshes the song and makes it current. Whereas when Glee do the likes of 'Forget You' 'Empire State Of Mind' 'Poker Face' etc. You already know the original too well and it sounds like kareoke :(
This iTunes chart is so dis-organised and out of place! (Top 40) Album tracks, (What's My Name, Game Over, Girls, Lose My Mind, More) reality tv related songs, (Heroes, Make You Feel My Love, Gillian McKeith) Xmas songs, (All I Want For Christmas Is You, Fairytale Of New York, Christmas Lights, Boots),fake songs (Turn My Swag On) and multiple versions of songs (Thinking Of Me, Your Song).

Leaving us with only 25 normal songs!

To be fair though, all the album tracks apart from Game Over are going to be future singles I think, and Turn My Swag On would probably still be top 40 if the real version was available. :D

I also don't mind Glee Cast. I like a lot of their songs, and I think some of them end up better than the originals. My main criticism is that a lot of their songs sound the same to each other. Another criticism I have is that some of their songs sound almost identical to the original. They should do more mash-ups like Halo/Walking On Sunshine in my opinion.

All Saints, forgotten about?! Nope, those of us that weren't in nappies at their peak still remember them as one of the best British girlgroups. They were, to the Spice Girls, what the (early) Sugababes were to Girls Aloud. The cool, more edgy, option with more focus on the vocals. I still believe you'd be hard pushed to find a record by a girlgroup of higher quality than "Never Ever".

'Pure Shores'? Same girlgroup but this was pop perfection imo.

Christmas Lights  #5! Surely if this was released sunday it could have been #1 by now :o

Glee don't rip off songs, they cover them, and usually give them new arrangements. People don't buy it because it's a song they know, they buy it cos it's well performed and they like Glee. But anyway, I don't think Glee will have the same impact next year as they did last year.

What makes that disorganised? It's a clear representation of what people are buying, which is exactly what the chart should be about... Anyway, just because a song is for Christmas or on an album, what makes that not normal?

That's what I had in mind, but they are charting before their 'release date' so it's a bit dis-organised. Although personally, I like the album songs charting :) It's just a bit annoying when there's lots of good songs falling quickly. But if released at any other time of year would be charting for longer. I really don't like 'Turn My Swag On' but I'd rather see Keri Hilson release her version and get a 'proper' charting of it rather than all these fake wannabes getting fame!

^ Exactly. :D (edit, in refence to Tom :P )

Cherry picking may have had a negative impact on the album charts but it has also given the public the power to determine what the hits are. The biggest example of 2010 by a country mile is 'Love The Way You Lie' which wasn't promoted or anything when the album 'Recovery' was released. It just sold on musical merit - or maybe Radio 1 had been playing it (?). Still, if 'LTWYL' ends 2010 as the biggest selling single of the year (without ever topping the UK chart) then that is moreso a true reflection of how people in general have bought music this year.

It's the hyped up singles that have either gone to no. 1 and plummeted, or failed to even make #1 (see 'Shame', 'The Flood' for eg).

I know that, but the chart is dis-organised! Lots of random entries coming in from anywhere and lots of songs are there for other reasons, X Factor, Christmas etc. And they are pushing the regular songs out of the chart alot quicker.

There's nothing wrong with the songs being there, it's just a bit choppy and mashed up!

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH CHERRY-PICKING!

I agree (except there's a few of their songs which I think they could've put more effort into making them more different to the original).

I don't even watch Glee, but I own 3 of their songs (Halo/Walking On Sunshine, Like a Prayer and Total Eclipse of the Heart), for the same reason I have every other song I own. Because they sound nice. :D

And it's not like Glee Cast can just release any old song and have it sell bucketloads. They've had a few top 10 hits (3 I think), and I believe they've had a few songs miss the top 200.

On the subject of Xmas songs - I completely agree - there are a number of bands who would be a distant memory if their Christmas classic didn't do the business every year - Slade are a pretty good example - they were huge in the first half of the 70's - I suspect few people under 30 have heard of them but for the Xmas record.

I'm really glad Coldplay bothered not only to do a Christmas Song but delivered one that is of the exact same standard as their 'normal' output - like them or not - at least they didn't just chuck any old rubbish out. And I also agree more should be doing it - I know XF keeps buggering up the Xmas No.1 - but losts of classics never got to number 1 - and actually of all songs released XMas songs more than any other are about connecting and having an emotional impact on people - rather than where they charted mattering - hence does it matter Fariytale of New York wasn't No 1 - or Last Xmas - or I Believe In Father Christmas - or Stop the Cavalry - I rather think not - a great Christmas song transcends that mark of success and just *becomes* part of Christmas. Coldplay I am 100% certain just added to the small pile. Take That really really ought to give it a go - I'm amazed Gary Barlow hasn't given it a proper go - (Geraldine accepted.)

I know I shouldn't be surprised considering it's Coldplay and all but MY GOD is that a bland and monotonous Christmas song! I actually like a lot of Coldplay songs (Fix You, Viva La Vida, In My Place) but snoozeworthy simply is not the word. Give me a bit of Mariah's 'Oh Santa' (also well below par for her) over that any day!

Yeah, I'm very pro-cherrypicking. It always annoys me that the album tracks get released on Monday, because there's so many which probably could've made top 40 with Sunday's sales added in (e.g. Ridin' Solo, Wonderman, Wait Your Turn).

About Radio 1, the first time they played Love the Way You Lie was either on the Monday or Tuesday when Eminem's album was released, but if I remember correctly, LTWYL was #11 on iTunes after 24 hours, and then #2 after 48 hours. The 2nd time they played it was on the mid-week chart update. However, I also heard Talkin' To Myself and Won't Back Down on Radio 1 around that time, so I have a feeling they might've basically played the whole album over a couple of weeks, sort of like they did with Tinie Tempah's album, unless I was just really lucky and happened to listen to Radio 1 everytime they were playing a Recovery album track. The first time I heard it on commercial radio was on the Big Top 40 Show (where they played it twice), and then I heard it on Galaxy FM pretty much immediately after, despite it not having even been confirmed as a single at this point. But I think it's good that the public have more control over what songs get popular this way. I know this probably wouldn't have happened, but imagine something like No Love was the 2nd single (awesome song imo, but it would not have been any bigger than a minor top 10 hit)! :o With Love the Way You Lie going to #1 on iTunes in lots of countries, they were basically forced to release it.

Then why post the following:

If it wasn't for cherry picking, then iTunes wouldn't be, as you claim, "dis-organised". :P

Okay, let's give him a rest guys.

But I have sympathy for the guys behind the Big Top 40 Show.

I didn't say there was anything bad with any of the songs being there, I just said it was dis-organised, you must of read inbetween the lines wrong. Although multiple versions of the same song do annoy me! And anything that's charting because of X Factor, and the Gillian McKeith song and the Alexa Goddard person are just crap, and don't deserve to be there any time of the year.

'Pure Shores'? Same girlgroup but this was pop perfection imo.

Apart from their cover of "Lady Marmalade", that was always my least favourite All Saints single from 2000 or before. :( I can see why people love it, but their best will always be "Never Ever" for me. Like I say, I'm not sure many girlgroups have topped it. "Pure Shores" definitely has the great harmonies and big chorus, but "Never Ever" has those and the spoken intro (which lots of people cringe at, but I love) with Shaznay bringing it back on the outro. I guess it can be a bit repetitive, but I love the structure of it.

It's more of a mis-understanding/conversation regarding our opinions really.
