Amélie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001)

suggested by: Jester

genre: romantic comedy

Rotten Tomatoes: 90%

IMDB: 8.6/10

Synopsis: Impish gamine Amélie (Audrey Tautou) lives alone and works in a café. When she finds a trove of toys hidden for 40 years behind a baseboard in her apartment, she's inspired to repatriate the items, an impulse of generosity that sparks more benevolent acts. A celebration of life, Amélie reminds us of the small wonders that abound around us ... if only we paused to look.

(should note that this film is in French but there is a English subtitled version).

Dancer In The Dark (Lars von Trier, 2000)

suggested by: JakeWild

genre: musical/drama

Rotten Tomatoes: 67%

IMDB: 7.8/10

Metacritic: 61/100

Synopsis: Selma has emigrated with her son from Central Europe to America. The year is 1964. Selma works day and night to save her son from the same disease she suffers from, a disease that inevitably will make her blind. But Selma has the energy to live because of her secret! She loves musicals. When life feels tough she can pretend that she is in the wonderful world of musicals...just for a short moment. All happiness life is not able to give her she finds there...

Frailty (Bill Paxton, 2002)

suggested by: Severin

genre: psychological thriller

Rotten Tomatoes: 74%

IMDB: 7.3/10

Synopsis: Fenton Meeks, comes forth to tell the FBI that his brother Adam may be the serial killer who calls himself God's Hands, who the FBI has been searching for. The film uses flashbacks to show Meeks' childhood with a father who believed he was on a mission from God to destroy demons that inhabit human bodies. Fenton saw his dad as evil, while Adam saw him as a hero.

Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi, 2007)

suggested by: Chris.

genre: drama/animation

Rotten Tomatoes: 96%

IMDB: 8/10

Metacritic: 90/100

Synopsis: Marjane is precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl who was nine years old during the Islamic Revolution when the fundamentalists first take power--forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. She cleverly outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden, while living with the terror of government persecution and the Iran/Iraq war. Then Marjane's journey moves on to Austria where, as a teenager, her parents send her to school in fear for her safety and, she has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape. Marjane eventually gains acceptance in Europe, but finds herself alone and horribly homesick, and returns to Iran to be with her family, although it means putting on the veil and living in a tyrannical society. After a difficult period of adjustment, she enters art school and marries, continuing to speak out against the hypocrisy she witnesses. At age 24, she realizes that while she is deeply Iranian, she cannot live in Iran. She then makes the heartbreaking decision to leave her homeland for France, optimistic about her future, shaped indelibly by her past.

(should note that this is a French film but there is an English dubbed version).

I did it in the title too but I can't edit the poll now :( to be fair were only just over 12 hours in, easy mistake.

Voted for Persepolis.

Also just thought of a great film I would have suggested had I remembered in time :(

i've obviously gone for dancer in the dark though the trailers for the others do look pretty good! i love the way persepolis looks and how it's shot and it sounds like a really interesting story and same with failty i love a good thriller. as for amelie

i don't know what to vote for, i'm not gonna go with my own, I feel like I ought to have seen Ameile but havent, but they all look really good, Frailty is probaly the most 'my thing' but Dancer In The Dark also looks very interesting as well.
I went for 'Persepolis' as it's been a film that's interested me for a while, but I never got round to seeing it! This will finally push me to see it. That said, they all look very good though. Some good choices to start with!

thanks to Severin, Jester and Jake for suggesting such good films by the way.

Dancer In The Dark got my vote although i already saw that one before. So f***ing heartbreaking.

I've wanted to watch Amelie for a year now, still can't get to do it. :(

I went for Dancer In The Dark, Amelie was close 2nd choice

I might close this earlier than originally planned, as theres 13 people who i consider are part of this from expressing interest in the last thread, and we have 11 votes already, so i might say once the poll gets to 13 votes i'll keep it open a day after that (unless we get to saturday), maybe longer if it's at a draw.
So it;s Dancer In The Dark? :o <3 Looking forward to seeing this masterpiece (and crying too) again!
Ok, so I shamelessly voted for my own but although they're all good films Frailty is easily my favourite

OK i'm gonna leave it open until approximately 11am tomorrow, as we might have had some people who voted but hadnt shown interest in the inital thread, and i'll PM everyone who did who hasnt replied to this topic so they dont miss out on voting if they hadnt. so basically, i'll open the discussion thread for the winning film tomorrow.
I voted Dancer In The Dark, btw as I have always wanted to watch it and never got round to it....

Voted for 'Frailty'.

I've seen 'Amélie' quite a few times before (and loved it). The other two look pretty interesting too, would be up for watching any of them.

Amelie as I've bought it but never watched it, and this will set me in the mood to sit down and watch it.

Will get the winning one if it isn't Amelie!

as we have more votes than expected, i'll definatly close this soon so we can move on, but right now it's at a draw, so i'll keep checking back and once it's not a draw i'll close it and open the discussion thread for the winning film.

Amélie will be the film this month, discussion thread will be opened shortly.
