I've just had Rihanna overtake herself "What's My Name" into "S&M"

What are yours?

Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' overtook 'California Gurls' last July after the latter had only spent a week at #1! 'Teenage Dream' then spent 6 weeks atop the chart.

Cheryl Cole almost did it with 'Promise This' (which spent 9 weeks at #1) and 'The Flood', but Katy Perry's fourth #1 'Firework' got a week at the top inbetween!

Tinie Tempah ft. Eric Turner - Written In The Stars

Swedish House Mafia vs. Tinie Tempah - Miami 2 Ibiza

Kind of.

Pendulum knocked themselves off #1 with 'Immunize' (feat. Liam Howlett) overtaking 'Watercolour'.
This has only ever happened once for me, Madonna had Crazy For You / Rescue Me both at #1 consecutively in early 1991 I think.

It's happened 8 times in my chart, weirdly all between 2002-2004, perhaps those were the years that I looned the hardest...

Shakira - Underneath Your Clothes (3 weeks at #1)

Shakira - Whenever, Wherever (1 week at #1)

This was an odd situtation, I got her album in February 2002 and fell in love with Underneath Your Clothes more than Whenever, Wherever but eventually the latter overhauled it after about 10 weeks in the top 5 already, meaning that the second single beat the first to #1!

DJ Sammy & Yanou feat Do - Heaven (12 weeks at #1)

DJ Sammy - Boys Of Summer (1 week at #1)

As if 12 weeks of DJ Sammy wasn't enough, the only reason he left #1 is because he had a new song out

Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground (1 week at #1)

Girls Aloud - Stay Another Day (1 week at #1)

Oh dear :drama: I did love SAD though!

Delta Goodrem - Not Me, Not I (6 weeks at #1)

Delta Goodrem - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (3 weeks at #1)

The ballad resigned to the gorgeous xmas cover in late 2003!

Sarah McLachlan - Fallen (2 weeks at #1)

Sarah McLachlan - World On Fire (6 weeks at #1)

Another artist I was addicted to for quite a while

The Corrs - Angel (1 week at #1)

The Corrs - Baby Be Brave (1 week at #1)

Album track knocks current single off #1 situation

Natasha Bedingfield - These Words (4 weeks at #1)

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten (2 weeks at #1)

See above, Unwritten wasn't due to be a single at this point, I just adored it as an album track and it knocked the single off the top

Delta Goodrem - Out Of The Blue (4 weeks at #1)

Delta Goodrem - Mistaken Identity (1 week at #1)

Delta Goodrem - Extraordinary Day (9 weeks at #1)

14 straight weeks of Delta! Loon indeed!

Alexandra Burke - The Silence (New Single Mix) (1 week at no.1)

Alexandra Burke - What Happens On The Dancefloor (1 week at no.1)

:) Ive only started my chart 13 weeks ago.

This has only ever happened once for me:

Hurts - Stay

Hurts - All I Want For Christmas Is New Year's Day

Two so far, however they both did it as a featured artist, both times....

Katy Perry

31st January 2010 If We Ever Meet Again - Timbaland Ft. Katy Perry

Mr. Hudson

21st February 2010 Playing With Fire - N-Dubz Ft. Mr. Hudson

28th February 2010 Young Forever - Jay-Z Ft. Mr. Hudson

Has not happened for ages but these were the few:

Styx: Babe and Why Me, 1980. "Why Me" is a very much underrated Styx track.

John Lennon: Just Like Starting Over, Imagine and Woman, 1981. Just Like Starting Over returned to #1 after he died.

Roxette: It Must Have Been Love, Listen To Your Heart, 1990. Listen To Your Heart was returning to the chart having peaked at #2 in 1989.

Queen: The Show Must Go On, Bohemian Rhapsody / These Are The Days Of Our Lives, 1991. The Show Must Go On returned to #1 after Freddie Mercury died.

Kingmaker: Ten Years Asleep, Queen Jane, 1993

Roxette hold the record for the most consecutive weeks at #1 with that sequence, 10 in total.

Happened less than I thought:

The release of Aeriel reawakened interest in KB's back catalogue, especially this gem from 1982's The Dreaming:

13-11-05 Pull Out The Pin - Kate Bush (1)

20-11-05 Pi - Kate Bush (2)

I absolutely looned over The Dolls second album:

23-04-06 Sex Changes - The Dresden Dolls (2)

07-05-06 Backstabber - The Dresden Dolls (3)

I was so happy that Metallica had actually released a decent album but I did over loon Death Magnetic:

26-10-08 The Day That Never Comes - Metallica (1(5))

02-11-08 Cyanide - Metallica (1)

Easily my fav album from last year was Sleigh Bells' Treats:

30-05-10 Tell 'Em - Sleigh Bells (2)

13-06-10 Rill Rill - Sleigh Bells (3)

Loved these two singles that ran very close together:

22-08-10 Found Love in a Graveyard - Veronica Falls (1)

29-08-10 Beachy Head - Veronica Falls (2)

Oh Shawn Smith, what a dude!:

26-09-10 Believe In Yourself - Brad (2)

10-10-10 Rush Hour - Brad (2)

Hmm...

Kelly Clarkson (2009):

{03} [24] (27) Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You - 15th January 2009 - 4th March 2009 - 7 Weeks

{04} [25] (28) Kelly Clarkson - Already Gone - 5th March 2009 - 11th March 2009 - 1 Week

Alexandra Burke (2010):

{11} [56] (62) Alexandra Burke - The Map - 6th May 2010 - 12th May 2010 - 1 Week

{12} [---] (63) Alexandra Burke feat. Pitbull - All Night Long - 13th May 2010 - 19th May 2010 - 1 Week

**She had a number 1, 7 weeks later with 'Start Without You' too, but Kylie Minogue managed to stay at the top for 6 consecutive weeks.**

Britney Spears (2011):

{05} [76] (84) Britney Spears - Till the World Ends - 10th March 2011 - 16th March 2011 - 1 Week {2 N-C Weeks}

{06} [77] (85) Britney Spears - Trip to Your Heart - 17th March 2011 - 5th April 2011 - 3 Weeks

{07} [---] (86) Britney Spears - Till the World Ends - 6th April 2011 - ??? - 1 Week {2 N-C Weeks}

**Had it not been for Glee's 'Loser Like Me' getting a week, then she would have replaced herself 3 TIMES! Twice with one song.**

Alicia Keys almost knocked herself off the number 1 spot as 'Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart' almost knocked off 'Doesn't Mean Anything' at the end of 2009, but Rihanna managed to score 2 weeks with 'Russian Roulette' in between, so it didn't happen :( - also 'My Life Would Suck Without You' by Glee Cast, almost got knocked off by their cover of 'Like A Prayer', but 'Good Times' by Roll Deep managed two weeks in between.

  • 3 weeks later...
It only happened recently with Adele replacing 'Rolling in the deep' with 'Someone like you'
  • 3 months later...
Cheryl Cole's Promise This (weirdly) replaced The Flood at number 1. Rihanna nearly knocked California King Bed off number 1 with Man Down, but Selena Gomez got a week in between.
  • 4 weeks later...

Happened twice, but only as featured artists.

Katy Perry was on top for four weeks as part of 3OH!3's Starstrukk, which was knocked off by Timbaland's If We Ever Meet Again which featured, you guessed it, Katy Perry. Interestingly, this was also top for four weeks.

Tinie Tempah also did it when his own Written In The Stars was top for four weeks, only to be knocked off by Miami 2 Ibiza, which of course was his collaboration with Swedish House Mafia. It was top for three weeks.

The closest anyone has been to achieving the feat without either featuring or having anyone as co-lead, is when Lady Gaga's Just Dance and Poker Face were seperated from each other by a solitary week at the summit for James Morrison and Nelly Furtado's Broken Strings.
