I remember a time, when people said that Adele's '19' era was a flop and that she'd never be as successful as Duffy, ever. I also remembering a few people saying J Lo would never have another big WW hit again and that Nicole Scherzinger will always remain a flop. Also people were saying that Katy Perry would be a "One album wonder"...

OH LOOK.

Crazy how times change! :o

Yeah, I was thinking the other day - imagine if someone had been in a coma since this time last year, just woke up this week, and looked at the charts - they would've been stunned to see Adele absolutely dominating and Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Scherzinger getting #1s.

This is why Radio 1 are better. Their variety gauge is 27% compared to Heart 8% and Capital 4%.

Seriously? The impression I get is that they almost play more rap than dedicated urban stations... ;)

Have you heard of target audience? Some people like rap/dance/current pop and listen to R1. Others who are slightly older or who don't like the current charts listen to Heart or Radio 2. This is possibly why R1 are still around despite R2 beating them in listeners, as R1 is important in bringing new artists up and because my age group don't like R2

Wow, so that must mean Radio 1 play a song more than once a day! :o

Anyway, I listen to both Capital and Radio 1 every day, and Capital is better. They play more music, better music, and the system they choose for playing music is farer, imo.

Like today, I was listening to Radio 1, and they must've spent like 20 minutes announcing the line-up for that concert they're doing. I was just like "Get on with it!!!!".

Well, apparently C-list on Radio 1 serves the song 5 plays a week, B-list - 10 plays a week, and A-list - 20 plays a week. So, all A-list songs should be played 3 times a day!

Good to see JLo is still smashing it <3

Bright Lights Bigger City up to 17! He may have his 3rd Top 20 afterall!

Hey (Nah Nah Nah) at 90? Seriously? I thought it was going to be Top 40 by now! Is it getting radio support?

All the radio stations have their advantages and disadvantages tbh.

Heart is the worst imo. The thing that annoys me the most is that they say "more music variety", yet refuse to play certain genres at all. Other stations like Smooth FM, it doesn't really bother me if they don't play hip hop, because they don't claim to. I don't know how is in charge of Heart FM, but it seems to me that they think "variety" means songs from different decades. It continually baffles me how they play songs like Borderline by Madonna and then Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys (also worth noting, they play this song every few hours, and I've never heard them call it "Part II", or "Broken Down", and I've never heard any reference to Jay-Z), and claim to be playing more music variety?!?

I like Radio 1. I listen to it everyday. Some things that annoy me about it though, is the talking they do all the time. It can get really frustrating tbh. Although Radio 1 does have the most variety of all the stations, and it plays songs from a few years ago which you think everybody has forgotten and stuff. It does annoy me a bit though, how during the day-time shows, it's almost as if they have a checklist of songs to play. It's like "one pop song, check, one rock song, check, one hip hop song, check". It just gets annoying tbh. It just comes across as artificial sometimes, although I'm glad they're not playing jazz or country music every hour, I guess. Another thing that annoys me if how they've got this list of artists which they seem intent on never playlisting anymore (e.g. Alexandra Burke, Enrique Iglesias). They have admitted this, so kudos to them, to be fair, because it saves us all from wondering, but it does seem very unfair. Alexandra, for example. Her next single could be a completely revolutionary song or something, but Radio 1 have already decided that they're not going to playlist it. Just seems a bit unfair tbh.

This brings me onto Capital. One thing I like about Capital is that I can trust them that if ANY artist comes out with a hit, they'll play it, because, from listening to the station, it's almost as if they're just playing all the songs that have made top 10 on iTunes over the past 12 months on rotate. However, this really doesn't help with those artists that are trying to break the mainstream. Although Capital's puropse is to "play all the hits". Unlike Heart FM, it's quite straight-forward with its intentions, and not misleading at all. Capital don't get some random obsession with a song and play it every few hours for 5 years, and they don't bias toward genres as much as some of the other radio stations which claim not to (Capital do play mainly pop and urban songs, because the chart is mainly pop and urban at the moment, that's the whole point!!!!). An annoying thing about Capital is how they have some really stupid radio edits of songs though. Most of them are okay, but some songs seem chopped up and scattered all over the place. Another annoying this is the insane amount of adverts. I usually turn over to Radio 1 during the adverts on Capital, although to be fair, the amount of adverts on Capital probably take up the same amount of time as the talking on Radio 1, although the talking on Radio 1 is far more interesting tbh (most of the time).

I'd just like to add my tuppence worth in - I agree almost entirely with what you've said Eric; I'd agree, for me, Capital is the best station. Real Radio up here is basically the Scottish version of Heart though, which I also dip in and out but they don't play the rap edit on a lot of songs that have a rap component on and that frustrates the hell out of me. Same with Forth One, which is basically a cross between Real Radio and Capital, leaning more to the Real Radio end of that spectrum.

Capital do seem to have a select few songs (usually 5 or 6) that they hammer to death. This I think is quite good, as usually at least 3 or 4 of them.

The 5 tracks they are hammering right now seem to be:-

Lady Gaga - Born This Way (was getting the play at the top of the hour this week)

Adele - Someone Like You

Rihanna - S&M

Jessie J - Price Tag

The Wanted - Gold Forever :puke:

So four out of five seems like a good ratio to me :)

Capital play all of S&M. Radio 1 do a horrific edit.

I can't listen to S&M now on any station other than Capital as the deletion of certain words does my bloody head in!!!

I've not heard Gold Forever that much on there tbh. If there's any song they're hooked on, I'd say it was Firework, but even so.

The bit about the DJs, their music taste isn't supposed to reflect in the music they're playing. They just play "the hits" on rotate. It's not up to the DJs to decide what "the hits" are, it's up to the public (i.e. what sells the most).

I think they've dispensed with Firework now on the whole (probably relegated to their C-list equivalent, if they have one) but they're definitely playing Gold Forever almost non-stop still, which ironically really needs to erm, stop.

Actually, I wonder if Capital vary the music they play between regions - since it was syndicated country wide I just (naively) assumed that they would be playing the same tracks pretty much the same number of times across the UK, but maybe this isn't the case?

I expect Katy Perry to hit to around 10 tonight (combined) I'm shocked at Alexis Jordan stability! Her songs actually do well.. which is good as she was a nobody before Happiness and everyone expected a flop.

Really glad to see Mann in the top 10 and Kanye West at number 12. Best news by far is seeing Gaga fall to number 16!

Hopefully we'll see Panic! enter the top 40 by Sunday and then perhaps Feeder and Justice'll debut within too - nice to have some new much for a change. As for Jodie Connor at the edge of the top 40, well done; I thought it'd flop considering it was 'On Air, On Sale' about a month ago. Hopefully Chipmunk and Willow Smith will follow a similar pattern now with radio support.

WOAH NICKI!

Didn't realise 'Girls Fall Like Dominoes' was so high already. She's doing so well in the UK atm!

oh wow i didn't even notice her there! same with kanye, i cannot believe he's at #12! if only they'd both come over and just do one big performance they'd both easily go top 10. so glad it's 2 of their best songs that are doing so well too
