June 19, 201114 yr I used to watch the last 5 minutes of this program when I was 8 just so I could hear the theme tune - it was epicness to the extreme (at least I thought so at the time). Be there a full length version of the song? Same here! I'll PM you a link.
June 20, 201114 yr Argh, I've now got into MOCK EXAM SEASON. I'll have it done by Thursday evening, promise.
June 21, 201114 yr Thanks Shakilover, this was my compilation - really pleased that you got it seeing as it's your sort of music for the most part and hopefully you made some good discoveries. Here are the track names and my reasoning behind each one; 1. JUJU feat Delta Goodrem - Live! Together Obviously I was going to shove Delta on here somehwere! Although it's not a typical Delta song - indeed it's a J-Pop collaboration, and therefore sounds nothing like any of her other material. It's really fun and unique and I love it, thought it would make a good opener but also something identifiably 'me'! It's from 2006/7 I think so not too dated. 2. Lenka - Heart Skips A Beat Correct, it's Lenka - this is a song from her new album - very twee and catchy, thought it contrasted quite well with the previous song. It's a surprisingly good second album actually. 3. Charlotte Martin - Dancing on Needles This is somebody who I discovered last year although she's apparently been around for ages, she has a touch of Tori Amos to her voice and music and this song best displays that I think. 4. Noah And The Whale - Waiting For My Chance To Come My favourite album track from one of my favourite albums of the year, this was featured in its entireity at the beginning of an episode of Skins not long ago, it was at some point during that that I realised what a brilliant, summery and uplifting song it is. Needs to be a single. 5. Tom Dice - Always and Forever This guy came 6th for Belgium in Eurovision last year with Me & My Guitar. His album was actually shockingly great and this was one of my highlights, it's a very mature/accomplished singer/songwriter song with a great melody and seemed to fit nicely next to Noah & The Whale. 6. Sara Varga - Spring For Livet One that was also on Pavel's compilation - it reached the final of Melodifestivalen this year and is one of my favourite songs of the year thus far. Really charming folky song albeit with dark lyrics about domestic violence - it's Swedish although I actually get yours/Shoat's Eastern European comparisons. 7. Tove Styrke - White Light Moment I absolutely love this, one of my favourite songs of the past year, it's indeed very Robyn but unpopular opinion alert: I like this more than anything from the Body Talk series, for an electropop song, I find it beautiful. Tove came out of Swedish Idol, just like all of the best Swedish popstars! 8. Florrie - You Wanna Start Something One of those popstars that's never going to hit the big time, this song sort of reminds me of something Girls Aloud would do crossed with anything from the last Annie album. Xenomania production I would assume. 9. Camilla Blom Polfeldt - Gone Earlier in the year, a boxset of demos for Melodifestivalen entries of days gone by leaked. BWO sent the song Gone in 2005 and as it turns out, this was the demo to it by some anonymous female singer who nobody's ever heard of (not even me!). It was the instant highlight of that boxset for me, she really brings a melancholy quality to the track, one for fans of emotional electro pop definitely. No longer version exists sadly, it cuts off at the 3 minute mark because of Eurovision purposes - which is one of my only criticisms of the contest. 10. Elin Lanto - Funeral Swedish again! Elin Lanto is a sort of middling popstar over there, not a superstar but she's had a few hits and appeared in Melodifestivalen a few times over the years. This song is from her GREAT last album which I couldn't recommend more to any pop fan - one of my favourites of last year and Funeral was the absolute highlight, such a big pop chorus. 11. Karizma - When Life is Grey Moldova criminally decided not to send this to Eurovision this year - more fool them! 12. Basto - Gregory's Theme This is very much like Tim Berg's Bromance from last year except imo it's got a far more interesting melody - one for dance fans! 13. Studio Killers - Ode To The Bouncer Definitely my most risky inclusion - I've resisted the temptation to send this to BJSC as I know it would be ridiculously love/hate, possibly leaning more on the hate side! It's got a great melody/chorus but the vocals are definitely an acquired taste. Glad you found some merit to it at least! 14. French Horn Rebellion Vs. Database - Beaches & Friends (The Twelves Radio Edit) I noticed this funky track at #1 in Brett-Butler's End of Year chart last year. I do make an effort to listen to anybody's EOY #1's that I'm not already familiar with and this definitely didn't disappoint me. It's definitely got a very 'French dance' sound to it, the sort of thing Daft Punk and Cassius excel at. 15. FC Kahuna feat Hafdis Huld - Hayling I absolutely adore Icelandic singer Hafdis Huld - this is a chillout track that she did almost 10 years ago and it's very similar in sound to a lot of ambient trip-hop type bands in the late 90s/early 00s. I wanted it on the compilation but wasn't sure where it would fit. Here seemed as appropriate a place as any other. 16. Petter feat Veronica Maggio - Längesen Petter is a famous Swedish rapper and it's fair to say that Veronica Maggio is their Adele - her recently released album saw EVERY track reach the singles chart and stay in there for weeks - they're all still in there almost two months later. Now I do love this song but I'm aware that it could be so much more - Petter's bits are a bit jarring and Veronica's chipmunk chorus is potentially annoying BUT the piano backing track is absolutely gorgeous and about 2 and a half minutes when Veronica's pure voice comes in, it's absolute heaven - I wish there was a full solo version of this by her at a regular pitch, it could be something very special indeed. 17. The Dead Cool Dropouts - Green Eyes Make Me Blue The female half of this male/female duo is Lisa from The Veronicas. I think it's just a side project of hers and this is the only songs of theirs that I've heard. I really like The Veronicas' slower songs such as Speechless and In Another Life and this is even more chilled than that. It has a very beautiful quality to it and fit nicely after the last two songs. 18. The Band Perry - If I Die Young This has been a rather huge hit in the US over the past year or so. It's a sad song lyrically but it instantly connected with me when I was going through a country phase late last summer. 19. Ed Sheeran feat Mikill Pane - Little Lady The chorus to this is taken from Ed's song The A Team (incidentally heading for the top five in the UK this week shockingly :o). The verses are obviously a lot more hard hitting than the original, it's sort of like a British version of Eminem's Stan to me. Although I can appreciate your criticisms of the song, in hindsight perhaps it is better off suited to the original version! But I wanted to put an Ed track on here and this seemed like one of his more interesting moments. 20. Simon May - Peggy's Theme (Variation of Julia's Theme from Eastenders) Anyone from the UK receiving this playlist would have ridiculed my inclusion of this, there is NOBODY in the country that doesn't know the melody. It's a piano/classical version of the theme tune of what is probably the most recognisable TV show/soap opera in the UK. They use this version when something sad/of note happens in the show as it's very emotionally stirring. I saw it on iTunes last year and I had to have it, I'm a sucker for this sort of grand classical piano music. Really glad you liked it and made quite a few nice discoveries, thanks for the great/detailed review, it's much appreciated, and here's the tracklist again in one block; 1. JUJU feat Delta Goodrem - Live! Together 2. Lenka - Heart Skips A Beat 3. Charlotte Martin - Dancing on Needles 4. Noah And The Whale - Waiting For My Chance To Come 5. Tom Dice - Always and Forever 6. Sara Varga - Spring For Livet 7. Tove Styrke - White Light Moment 8. Florrie - You Wanna Start Something 9. Camilla Blom Polfeldt - Gone 10. Elin Lanto - Funeral 11. Karizma - When Life is Grey 12. Basto - Gregory's Theme 13. Studio Killers - Ode To The Bouncer 14. French Horn Rebellion Vs. Database - Beaches & Friends (The Twelves Radio Edit) 15. FC Kahuna feat Hafdis Huld - Hayling 16. Petter feat Veronica Maggio - Längesen 17. The Dead Cool Dropouts - Green Eyes Make Me Blue 18. The Band Perry - If I Die Young 19. Ed Sheeran feat Mikill Pane - Little Lady 20. Simon May - Peggy's Theme (Variation of Julia's Theme from Eastenders) Could you send me the link for this please?
June 22, 201114 yr IN TIME. Track UNO: 7/10 A bit too repetitive and frankly boring for me. However it was nice. Good background music, doesn't really distract you. Track DOS: 9/10 This one is much better. The beat and electronic sounds are mesmerising! <3 I'd totally keep it on my ipod. Track TRES: 5/10 Can't say i like the vocals unfortunately. Don't really know what to say about this one except i don't remember the song the instant i turned it off. ): Track QUATRO: 7.5/10 Much crazier than track TRES tbh. Beat is much more infectious and the whole thing sounds probably most contemporary out of the first QUATRO songs. Again, vocals are bad and the ending could've been better without the 'YOU'. Track CINCO: 4/10 The title track! I googled it and it's Tim Curry, the actor who played PENNYWISE. *freaks out* Can't say i'm keen on the song but everytime i will be playing it, it will be reminding of this terrifying clown. *deletes song from ipod* Track SEIS: 7.5/10 I absolutely LOVE and hate this song at the same time. My biggest issue is actual 'singing'. I just laugh when I hear the vocals. 'EVERYTIIIIME'. But at the same time i find this part the best of the whole song. Weird stuff. Oh and yeah, i love a bit of repetitiveness but not too much, and it was a bit too much this time. Track SIETE: 9/10 KANSAS. Loving the chorus (i guess the part with them saying 'Kansas' is one?) especially for the music. Ahhh <3 I hear string instrument sounds, maybe that's why?! Track OCHO: 6/10 Sung by the campiest man i've heard. Ha! At least how i hear it. The longest song in the bunch too! Don't really have much to say except i find it mediocre, nothing really stands out. Track NUEVE: 6.5/10 I expect it to be some kind of a classic, but i am weak at recognising older songs even if i heard them before. Sounds like not the song that i'd normally listen to however. Track DIEZ: 6/10 'Older school' Los Campesinos!. Knowing my EPICFAILNESS at Nevermind the BuzzJacks game in the Lounge (bonus points for advertising by not breaking the context! :cheer: ) it might well be them. Ha! But it does sound a bit older than LC!. Anyway, the song is okay but i'd not hurry to listen to it again. Track ONCE: 5/10 They want my money. ;o I cheated and googled it. A song from the year i was born in!! However that doesn't make it special. Maybe i'm being the 'older song'-ist but i didn't like it and it's probably my second least favourite song of the list so far. Track DOCE: 5/10 Vocals are not really the kind i like to listen to. Haha, if that makes sense. The whole thing is really not rememberable to me personally. Track TRECE: 10/10 WOW loving this. There's a hook and everything. Distinctive catchy beat with matching vocals. ALWAYS a good combination. AMAZING from the start to finish. Best thing so far. Even the out of placeness of male lines in the song don't really matter. Track CATORCE: 5/10 At least synths here makes the song memorable. Otherwise i'm not crazy about it at all, sorry. Track QUINCE: 4/10 If this song wasn't included now I'm listening for the n-th time i'd not even notice. I literally can't say anything good OR bad about it. Track DIECISÉIS: 6/10 A bit too aggressive, guitarish and heavy for my liking. However i'm seeing why it could be liked by people: distinctive strong guitar sounds, catchy melody. Track DIECISIETE: 9/10 Starts SO GOOD. Right until the vocals which puts me off just a tiniest bit. But the music is AMAZING. The clapping ALWAYS works for me as well for some reason. C U L8ER. Track DIECIOCHO: 9.5/10 Probably most memorable lyrics of the whole list. I really memorised the chorus lines after like the 2nd time hearing the song. Maybe because the vocals heavily remind me of Dirty Projectors. Music is good too, very melodic and sweet but this is the case when vocals and lyrics outshadow music. Great closing track (but doesn't work well if the next track on your playlist is a swedish schlager song, a Melodifestivalen reject to be precise. Ha!) YAY I HAS DONE IT. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5fREGUHeZb4/TOxcTmRwKmI/AAAAAAAAH48/FwIu4lLAzEo/s400/2z6gj8o.jpg.gif Edited June 22, 201114 yr by P∆V‡L
June 22, 201114 yr Pav, I think I remember you got "I've Got A Habit I Just Can't Quit" which is mine. Thanks for the review and glad you really liked some of the tracks!!! Full tracklisting to follow...
June 22, 201114 yr 1. Spooky - Little Bullet Part One (1993) Thought this would be a nice calm intro to the CD rather than the full guitar shock that opened my last one. Spooky were one of the rash of British dance bands that enjoyed success in the Mid 90s 2. Dot Allison - We're Only Science (2002) Otherwise known as the lead singer of One Dove, Dot has been releasing really rather good records for ages now and this one is rather fabulous. 3. Alan Vega - Saturn Drive (1983) Better known as one half of seminal new wave/punk/electronic duo Suicide, I love this guy's solo stuff. Co-written by Al Jourgensen of Ministry. 4. Nitzer Ebb - Hearts And Minds (Mix Hypersonic) (1989) One of the earlier EBM groups, this lot popularised the genre along with Front 242 during the mid to late 80s. 5. Renegade Soundwave - Biting My Nails (1988) f*** Tim Curry and his version of the this tune originally done by a South African singer songwriter, this is the f***ing dog's bollocks. I didn't even know it was a cover! A cracker of a tune that always gets rumps a shaking here at Grebo Towers. RSW were also a big influence on The Chemical Brothers apparently. 6. The Shamen - Make It Mine (1990) My favourite song by this bunch, released before Will Sin passed away in a drowning accident. Absolutely awesome. 7. The Wolfgang Press - Kansas (1989) Don't know much about this lot apart from they were on 4AD in the 80s but I heard this once on late night TV and I loved it immediately. 8. Cabaret Voltaire - Sensoria (12" Mix) (1984) Another 'seminal' band, this time from Sheffield. One of the earliest UK synth bands they released music that was light years away from the poppy likes of early Depeche Mode. 9. Age Of Chance - Kiss (1985) My second favourite cover of all-time (after Hurt) this gives the Prince original a right pummeling. Second pat will follow after I've seen The Apprentice...
June 22, 201114 yr I've Got A Habit Part 2 10. Pop Will Eat Itself - PWEIzation (1989) From the finest bunch of greboes to take to a stage, a perfect example of what made The Poppies one of my favourite bands of the late80s/early 90s 11. Mansun - Taxloss (Lisa Marie Experience Remix) (1997) I love this remix of the track from Mansun's debut album. 12. Pop Levi - Sugar Assault Me Now (2007) Solo single from the former member of Ladytron, I loved the glammed up bubblegum feel of this single. 13. Tricky - Black Steel (1995) This was a major rediscovery for me after I heard it again on 6music earlier this year. Glad you really rated this one as it is brilliant. 14. The Dead 60s - Ghostfaced Killer (2005) The debut album was an excellent record and contained this great ska-based track. Shame the follow up was so poor as i was expecting great things from them. 15. White Denim - Drug (2011) I really like the woozy psychedelic feel of this band's music and this is as good example as any of their oeuvre. 16. Manic Street Preachers - Comfort Comes (1994) One of the Manic's greatest b-sides, this is a definite signpost of the greatness that was to come when they released The Holy Bible 17. Le Tigre - Deceptacon (1999) The lead song from Kathleen Hanna's (ex-Bikini Kill) second band. A quite recent discovery, I fell in love with it for just about the same reasons as Pav. 18. Friends - Friend Crush (2011) I know nothing about them but I do love the song. So some hits with you there Pav and some wild misses but I am glad you got something out of it. Thanks for the review.

June 22, 201114 yr WAIT so Let's Pretend It's Sunday wasn't Grebo's? Now I'm utterly STUMPED. Oh and by the way, I'll have a review done for that soon, as it's half complete already.
June 23, 201114 yr Woah I will check out some of the bands whose songs i loved. Tricky <3 Is it Martina Topley-Bird on the vocals in 'Black Steel'? :o  Edited June 23, 201114 yr by P∆V‡L
