I hate to disagree with you, but I am sure the production did not take as long. I imagine it was a case of making 8 beats on the computer, selecting the "bass" option the computer to play constantly, and putting their voice through automatic autotune.

Surely isn't 8 beats quite a lot compared to most other songs in the chart though? Most songs just seem to be one beat for the verse and another for the chorus, and sometimes the chorus is the the same beat as the verse with another instrument added in.

Plus, I'm sure it took longer to make than the instrumental to Someone Like You. In that song, there's only one instrument, and it's ready-made. In Party Rock Anthem they had to create each different instrument/sounds. And the process is often quite lengthy, and involves layering, and then listening to the beats again and again, and slightly tweaking the setting each time until it sounds perfect. In Someone Like You they just select a piano.

And even the notes in Someone Like You that the piano plays are so basic. They basically got the chord progression, and then just split the chords into seperate notes and run up and down (I think they call it arpeggiating or "broken chords").

I don't quite means the beats. I mean the synths, I wasn't sure what to call it. I am sure all of the instruments were on the computer though. My music teacher said it sounded like this.

You mean like they're pre-sets on the program they used?

It's possible. They could've been (it kinda does sound like that, some of the instruments in it sound quite generic).

Although I know producers avoid using presets because there's always the danger that you can use the same preset as was used in another song, then you get people saying you copied it and stuff (you're safe in terms of court and legal action, because you can easily demonstrate it came with the software, but the public don't usually know all the ins and outs).

A good example of two songs using the same preset and most of the public thinking one copied the other was Ayo Technology by 50 Cent (produced by Timbaland) and Courtship Dating by Crystal Castles. They used the same preset so ended up with very similar songs, and meanwhile their fanbases argued about who copied who (50 Cent's song was released first, but Crystal Castles had performed their song live before Ayo Technology was made).

So yeah, artists want to avoid situations like this. So a common thing they do is use the preset and then adjust the preset. It can save them a lot of time, but at the same time means they can more easily avoid such situations like the one Timbaland had.

EDIT: Sorry, you probably didn't need to know all this. To sum up, they might've used presets (if that's what your teacher meant). I suspect they would've still altered them a bit though, so it's not quite like those artists that just go an pick up a violin off the floor and make a song.

That is very interesting Eric, I didn't know about that situation. I imagine the presets will have been ajusted for that reason.

Yeah. I think Crystal Castles were quite happy about having a way to get exposure though.

But it didn't help because Timbaland had a bit of a reputation for sampling without permission (the worst case was this one time where a kid entered a music competition, and he won, then Timbaland sampled the song for one of Nelly Furtado's albums (I think)), so people found it entirely believable that Timbaland would've nicked the beat (even though in that particular case he didn't in reality). Even to this day, a lot of people still think Timbaland stole it, which is a shame tbh.

That's true, I haven't heard of them .

That is quite bad actually :o.

Yeah. Not many people had really. I don't think they got anywhere close to mainstream.

Yeah, it seems sad really. That innocent kid got his song stolen. :( I guess Timbaland assumed nobody would find out. Or maybe he thought he'd be allowed to use it freely.

Yeah. :( He produced The Way I Are though, so let's not hate on him too much.

He probably stole that too :kink:.

Speaking of The Way I Are.... why is it called The Way I Are when it doesn't even say that in the song (it says The Way You Are....) and.... where is Timbaland these days? He was pretty big back then.

Well, he sampled this certain very famous song in it:

 The Way I Are is brilliant though. I actually can't understand how people make beats like that. If anybody doesn't know it it's basically Telephone by Lady Gaga with a different chord progression, more percussion, less synths, Keri Hilson and rapping, and the sample in the video above. BRILLIANT!

It's called "The Way I Are" I think because the whole song has lots of grammatical errors in it, so they thought they'd put on in the title. The grammar in the song was positively mortifying to a lot of people when it came out. Even though it was just mainly double negatives and swapping "I" for "am", etc.

However long it took to make, 'Party Rock Anthem' is nothing special! It's pretty bland and sounds like it could've been made by any old half-arsed producer really. Though if 'I Gotta Feeling' can sell a million I don't see why LMFAO shouldn't.

Sometimes I wish 'Boom Boom Pow' was the bigger hit of the two, but both did really well and are amazing and worthy of lots of smilies. IGF has been overplayed but it's still a great feel-good tune!

Something tells me LMFAO's new single's gonna flop, I mean it's already out and no-ones bought it - so they have no contest.

^ In the US Boom Boom Pow was almost as big as I Gotta Feeling, which is good. :D

I was it was Meet Me Halfway that had I Gotta Feeling's sales though. :( I Gotta Feeling isn't bad though, but I think Someone Like You will outsell it now.

^ Any of the singles off the BEPs' last two albums (yes, even The Time) are better than IGF in my opinion!

Hope The Pierces stay top 3 but I imagine they'll end up at #6 :(

I prefer The Time to I Gotta Feeling aswell. The last chorus in The Time where it goes all stuttery. I can listen to it over and over again.
