Maybe they have just put out the song that they felt should introduce the album.

This is the only reason why any song should be even released. The release date is still very far ahead which makes me think that this is not the "proper lead single". They might go the Gaga route just for the exposure but will people get tired of them before the album arrives if the material is not brilliant? Time will tell.

Gaga's album is so strong that nobody remembers the mediocrity of the first single(s). Scheisse, Bloody Mary, Hair etc... fantastic pop songs.

Tbh I can't really say anything objective about Coldplay because their first two albums once were the soundtrack of my life and what I really want from them is to hear another "Clocks". But I'm also sure I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

"Don't go chasing waterfalls/Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to" :P

Excellent post, and I agree..... I'm sick of bands and acts releasing naff first singles..... the lead single will always be the main single off an album in my view, and it's bizarre that the best doesn't come first these days.

Again, maybe the band feels that the first song released IS the best. It's not like they most certainly sit down and decide to deliberately release something "naff". People aren't always gonna agree on what is the "best" or "worst".

Just listened to 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' and it's excellent. :D Now I've heard the track, I'm hoping this does really well next week as it's released at midnight.
I love it - it sounds a weeny bit different from their last material (whoever said it sounds a little bit like Lovers In Japan was right), and as much as I adore songs like Clocks and trouble, it is good they are trying to move on.

This. I'm hearing a bit of Life in Technicolor as well. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.

To be honest it makes sense if the 'best' single is second. When a band releases a new album as long as the first single isn't totally naff and one of the worst songs on the album, it'll probably do well enough from their fanbase and the casual sales it does pick up. Releasing better songs after is likely to keep them in the public eye longer and improve album sales....

Yeah, if you're going to release 2 singles before an album it makes sense to release a good-but-not-the-best song first and then the best song on the album second.

It sounds distinctly like an upbeat 'Strawberry Swing' for me, only with a 2011 lens. Ain't got nuttin of 'Lovers In Japan', though.
This new single is pretty weak. "Lovers in Japan" is much, much better (probably their best song).
As if I am liking a Coldplay single!! :manson: Coldplay are one of those acts who I despise so much, that I have to listen to their song at least once in order to give my opinion on it (If you get what I mean!) and fortunately for them, I'm liking it! It's excellent. Does get repetitive though so probably won't last so many plays, but if the album/future singles are in this sort of direction, then I'll listen to them!

This is glorious, my favourite thing they've ever done.

Like Jonjo, I'm about as far from a Coldplay fan as you can get...
