LOL. Higher & Ego & Up had a brilliant chart run at 99p! I agree with them reduing it to 59p No on air songs have really did well apart from Jessie J Imo!

Lots of on air songs have though. Like Someone Like You, S&M, Airplanes, Telephone, etc. They're album tracks, but it's exactly the same as on air, on sale (the main and only difference is that promotion doesn't usually start immediately after they're put on sale, and they don't get that head start from fanbase sales, because the fans buy the album in those scenarios).

Even one of The Saturdays' own did well. I believe Issues from a couple of years ago had to climb up the chart, and got top 5 in the end.

Brilliant move by The Sats to reduce it to 59p hardly any money is made from downloads anyway and judging by the three boxes of Notorious sleeves they have signed (guessing 500 or so in each) thats £4,500 in revenue (£2.99 on Sats website) so the single itself really isn't doing too badly (although no-where near as well as their other singles so far).

But most of that revenue will be eaten up by production of the CD Single. Because of the economies of scale for making such a small batch of CD singles, they will probably make a loss on each one that gets sold. Besides, any money they do earn will go towards paying off their advances & recording costs.

How could you say the album is going to flop after one single? Wordshaker has sold 86,000 it's not really a bomb compared to album sales these days.

Someone Like You had brilliant airplay, Tv and an amazing live performance. Notorious however is dropping in airplay and not had many oppurtunities to perform live, where's S&M was also performed at brits. Saying that Higher & Ego did well and that was like an on air/on sale thing. I think The Wanted will do amazing with their new average single as it's 22 on airplay already!

Hence 'Revenue' and not profit. The point I was making was that not many artists sell many physicals or sell physicals for £2.99 most being £1.99.

Although, I do agree they would make nothing from these due to advances/recording etc..but it sure helps a long way unlike selling a download for 99p and generating a return of 6/7p.

86k are crap sales - even in this day and ago [unless your a small independent act or starting out] - I dont see how you can say they're not.

Hence why they then moved away from releasing from it after Ego as they knew they wouldnt get another hit from it - so released MY and the small album to tide them over - pay for the loss of WS and see if they are a viable band still.

The Sats are really treading on egg shells with each release.

Will be interesting to see how the new album does tbh - if it doesn't sell like WS probably be the end for em

Yeah, that's true. But there's so many examples. Like Ridin' Solo did aswell. Debuted at #44, but climbed all the way to #2 after a few months and at 99p.

But it does seem to be American songs that manage to debut low in the charts and slowly climb to massive heights after a while, like 90% of the time. Most of the British songs seem to either debut at their peak and then fall quickly down the chart, or climb to a low peak.

I do agree and I'm a bit of a loon! CD sales are pretty irrelevant though, if they get a sold out Arena tour for December that will generate HUGE profits...Time will tell I am unsure if they will manage to have a sell out Arena Tour especially with so little promotion..I mean they performed Notorious once on So You Think You Can Dance which had pretty crap viewing figures. As far as promo goes they need to get some serious talk shows booked..

Anyway back to iTunes.....

the Bad Meets Evil song is pretty good actually - could it be this year's Airplanes? :o

I thought it was this years Love the Way You Lie :D

Didn't I Gotta Feeling enter at 70 or something and fell the week before it climbed to the top 10?

The top 5 looks more like getting tight more than anything, and I wouldn't be surprised Bad Meets Evil will end up top 10 by the end of the week.

Same here

I don't think Lighters will do that well. Airplanes was at #12 on iTunes after like 3 days, and Love the Way You Lie was #2 after 3 days.

Although given the conversation we've just been having, it could climb over the coming weeks obviously. But it's not had such a strong start compared to those other album tracks.

It probably did. I Gotta Feeling actually took off really quickly (probably because it was popular in the US already at the time). A combination of Boom Boom Pow being held back, and I Gotta Feeling getting popular earlier than intended led to them both being in the top 10 at the same time. A similar thing happened last year with Rihanna. Only Girl got held back for ages, and What's My Name? got popular much earlier than planned so they were at the top of the chart together. They actually brought What's My Name?'s release date forward a month because of that (it was originally late January, but they moved it to late December after it had entered the top 10).

Airplanes was another example of a song that got popular really early. It got to #1 over a month before its release date. Which led to B.o.B. getting one of the shortest gaps between 2 #1 singles. Okay, I'm rambling here.

There appears to be a dubstep rework of the Tetris theme tune climbing close to the top 100 :o
