June 29, 201213 yr Just heard this on The Vault. Could she squeeze any more emoting into it? It's desperately formulaic. Devoid of personality or idiosyncrasy. 100% Buzzjack-fodder.
June 29, 201213 yr I'm not sure I'd say it's formulaic, but I agree that it's just an exercise in putting AS MUCH EMOTION as possible in. Still it's a very unique song though, and I'd rather more emoting than less, so I'll forgive it.
June 29, 201213 yr How is it unique? For a start the verse sounds like Wherever You Will Go. The metaphor of a person as immovable object has been done hundreds of times already and while that is ok, it certainly means that it's not unique. It also goes quiet in all the places you'd expect it to go quiet. Although, I like the strings and some of the piano. The vocals ruin the whole thing. Could have been Delta Goodrem or Katy Perry in one of her more reflective moments.
June 29, 201213 yr The vocal tone is QUITE distinctive and it's clearly not any standard piano ballad girl singing that. I wasn't referring to the lyrics at all. I'd never mistake it for Delta or Katy either, in fact, I'd never mistake it for anything else. The structure and the lyrics aren't unique, but the way it's performed is, and I'm quite aware the way that it's performed is down to taste.
June 29, 201213 yr It is a matter of taste. I dont find her voice particularly striking. Edited June 29, 201213 yr by tonyttt31
June 30, 201213 yr Author I'm probably biased due to my love of Demi, but I absolutely love this song and have done since that first listen. It's my 3rd favourite song of 2011, it's just stunning. I personally don't see how it's formulaic at all really, well admittedly it's hardly an innovation in popular music but the break in her voice (which makes it all the more emotive for me) is pretty unique, even if the piano backing and cliche lyrics aren't.
June 30, 201213 yr I loved it from first listen and I was never a fan of Demi beforehand. I have a bit of a vendetta against most Disney people. :P
September 25, 201311 yr Seeing as this is currently in the UK iTunes top 20, I decided to re-listen to the song and re-watch the music video. 'Skyscraper' is definitely one of my favourite songs of all-time and it looks like what I posted (in bold) on the day it premiered has turned out to be true: I so want this to be available on UK iTunes, I need to download it - it could possibly be on of my favourite songs of all time :o It is just so beautiful and emotional! It's like when I saw the video of Diana Vickers singing on Little Voice - beautiful and powerful :) You may think I'm going over the top here - but seriously this song is stunning. I'm so glad it is #1 on US iTunes :) I am so so pleased that it looks like it will officially chart top 20 here in the UK on Sunday, I really hope that one day it will reach the top 10 or even #1. It really is such an incredible song.
September 26, 201311 yr I was quite surprised to read so much hate towards 'Skyscraper', as displayed in the iTunes thread! I'm pleased that it's finally going to reach a more respectable position. ^_^ It's clearly begging to be an X Factor winner's single too.

Maybe its useage this year means they're gearing up to have it as this year's winner's single.
September 26, 201311 yr It already was selected, so I doubt they'll use it again (if Union J's version gets out).
September 26, 201311 yr "Impossible" was going to be Cher Lloyd's single, no? I do think they'll use it again this year or next year.
September 26, 201311 yr "Impossible" was going to be Cher Lloyd's single, no? I do think they'll use it again this year or next year. Did her version ever surface though/was introduced as a track on her album? (that is, if the song with the same name is the cover that would have been their winners' single?) There seems to be a lot of want for Union J's cover of the song, so when/if it comes to light I doubt X Factor will touch it for a winners' single choice this year, or in the near future.
September 26, 201311 yr If they really want "Skyscraper" to be a winner's single, I can't see it being on the Union J album putting them off given how much success that album looks likely to have.

September 26, 201311 yr I detect sarcasm *insert hm4:* Well it's not exactly gonna sell a million copies is it. (might be lucky to get 100k oops)
September 26, 201311 yr Well it's not exactly gonna sell a million copies is it. (might be lucky to get 100k oops) It should do though :P
September 26, 201311 yr Didn't someone like Joe McElderry cover "Skyscraper". They won't care about recycling it. It's a shame their recycling such a great song though.
