Posted July 18, 201114 yr Who are the artists that made you think, it's over for them, but then, from out of nowhere they comeback with a ridiculously successful era? We have Kelly Clarkson who followed her flop era, 'My December' with the successful(ish) 'All I Ever Wanted'. Adele who seemed to top all the "Sound of 2008" polls but lost out (hugely) to Duffy at the time in sales and commercial success but has managed to not only turn that around with her new era, but also gain sales for her first era, that is quite an impressive feat. But the two biggest stars for this this year, in my opinion is Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Scherzinger. The former in particular. Nicole attempted many times for a solo career, but ultimately, ended up being nothing without the Pussycat Dolls. But now she has 3 top 5 hits from the same album, a decent-ish selling album (considering the climate we're in at the moment, the chart run is nice and stable) all with high profile performances. But Jennifer Lopez. I never, ever would have thought she'd become so relevant again. So who do you think could be contenders in the near future? Is it dead in the water for Christina Aguilera? Or do we think she could be nu-J Lo and turn it around? Is it over for Duffy? Who else?
July 18, 201114 yr I assume you mean from bad to good, rather than vice versa, or the list would be almost infinite. :P Past ones have included Mariah Carey, of course. Edited July 18, 201114 yr by vidcapper
July 18, 201114 yr We should see a Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup comeback :magic: :kink: OK, no :( On a serious note, some recent big turnaround stars are Chris Brown :puke: and Snoop Dogg. Jason Derulo, Beyonce and The Wanted already had good careers, but just when you thought they were become decreasingly irrelevant they release massive singles. It isn't yet over for Pixie Lott and The Saturdays - both could release big singles in the future (The Sats of course much less likely but they could do an 'Up' or girlbands could somehow get more popular and they lead a GB rev.) And when indie makes a comeback in a few years Paramore could really turn their career round, 'Monster' got T10 (iTunes) on name alone, imagine how big it could have been if guitar music was popular.
July 18, 201114 yr I do think Christina Aguilera will make a comeback soon. I don't think in a massive way, but I could see her getting another top 20 hit one day. Mariah Carey, I'm not sure. I'd love her back in the charts, but there's every chance she'll decide to focus of her family now, in which case she obviously won't be back in the charts for a long time now.
July 18, 201114 yr DJ Fresh. He had a whole bunch of songs which charted between 2003 and 2005 but none made the top 40. Then, after a 5 year break, Gold Dust and Louder.
July 18, 201114 yr Robyn! 90s early Britney mould teen star with a few hits to her name returns after nine years in the wilderness with a #1 single and extends her career for another few years! I've honestly thought that it was all over for Enrique Iglesias on at least three separate occasions but he always finds a way back  I also recall definitely thinking that Rihanna was over after both If It's Lovin' That You Want and We Ride - how wrong I was :heehee:
July 18, 201114 yr This is clearly about singles chart only again and I guess Jonjo was talking about MLWSWY
July 18, 201114 yr Some of the biggest turnarounds ever are missing that most of the above V poor examples! Madonna 1998- Ray Of Light Era Tom Jones- 1999- Reload Kylie- 2000- Light Years spring instantly to mind :D
July 18, 201114 yr I wouldn't exactly call 'All I Ever Wanted' successful... I agree. The album wasn't a huge seller. My life will suck without you could of sold a hell of a lot more being a number 1 single and the follow up singles all flopped JLO hasn't really turned her career around. On the floor has been a huge success but the album has flopped and I'm into you hasn't seen success at all around the world. JLO will never get the sales and success she had with her first three albums. Back then, she was having hit after hit followed by albums selling like 6-8 million copies.
July 18, 201114 yr Morrissey From barely top 40 singles to four consecutive top 10 singles and after one peaking at No. 11 another No. 3 hit You Have Killed Me (2006). One of the most triumphant chart come backs ever.
July 18, 201114 yr I'm sure prior to 2006 Gary Barlow thought he'd only be on screen again advertising Holland's Meat Pies. Things have turned out quite nice for him. Kath Edited July 18, 201114 yr by Kathyp
July 18, 201114 yr Author In regards to Mariah Carey, I definitely think she has potential to do very well if she gets it right! She needs to stop trying so hard. 'Obsessed' showed that she could become relevant again if she wanted to. And I stated Kelly C, because AIEW was a bigger success than MD and I put her down (even though she may not be seen as an obvious choice) just because I felt like I couldn't not put her down
July 18, 201114 yr Mariah Was only really a big name over here between 93-96 and since then sales of her albums have been modest by comparison, even the more successful albums like EOM. Her continued hits have in the main been thanks to her US success to remind the UK of her status, her "drift" into R N B in the late 90s made her lose the centre ground- and whilst a good move US wise (which is where the money is so i'm sure she's not that hurt by her UK sales) it definitely marked the end for her as UK chart force capable of providing top 10 hit after top 10.... July 18, 201114 yr Alicia keys turned herself round She had the odd hit but she never took the UK by storm like she did in the states. But empire state of mind made the UK love her suddenly and this led to Element of freedom being her top selling album here plus Doesn't mean anything, Try sleeping and Empire part 2 selling very well.
July 18, 201114 yr I would definitely agree with J-Lo and Nicole, if you were to tell me a year ago that they would both have huge #1s in 2011 I would have laughed in your face, but here we are... Maybe going by that, there may be some hope for Christina Aguilera again one day.
July 18, 201114 yr Some of the biggest turnarounds ever are missing that most of the above V poor examples! Kylie- 2000- Light Years I thought of Kylie when I saw this thread too! After Word is Out peaked at #16 in 1991, Kylie never had a Top 10 again (apart from Confide in Me, Give Me Just a Little More Time, and If You Were With Me Now - which were all released within the beginning of the 90's anyway :P) until 2000, where she got a #1 single and a #2 album!! :cheer:
July 18, 201114 yr Robbie Williams When was Robbie's career ever 'down'? Reality Killed The Video Star was a bit of a flop by his standards but it was still a very respectable seller and produced 2 top 10 hits.
July 18, 201114 yr When was Robbie's career ever 'down'? Reality Killed The Video Star was a bit of a flop by his standards but it was still a very respectable seller and produced 2 top 10 hits. His solo career was struggling to get off the ground before Angels. I saw him in his first solo tour when I was able to get a ticket for a modest sized venue (Southampton Guildhall) less than a week before the gig.
