Posted August 10, 201113 yr I assume the riots across the country must be affecting sales? In some areas people may be afraid to go to the main shops?
August 10, 201113 yr of course all sorts of shops are being affected by this situation (especially apple stores and quality shoes retailers) , but i am sure once this is over, it will all return to normal. so unless this situation will last for the next 6 months, then shops should be fine. August 10, 201113 yr I assume the riots across the country must be affecting sales? In some areas people may be afraid to go to the main shops? The riots have been at night, so I doubt it's made any difference, except where the shops have been directly attacked/looted.
August 10, 201113 yr Author The riots have been at night, so I doubt it's made any difference, except where the shops have been directly attacked/looted. Just heard Birmingham's main shopping centre has been closed early as a precaution - early closures will also lessen sales.
August 10, 201113 yr Plus a few indie labels have had more or less their entire stock destroyed, including XL Records (Adele's label) :o
August 10, 201113 yr Author You can still download albums though Download sales in the Albums don't count for very much.
August 10, 201113 yr Download sales in the Albums don't count for very much. I know, but people will probably prefer to buy online instead of going out into the shops, considering the circumstances
August 10, 201113 yr Plus a few indie labels have had more or less their entire stock destroyed, including XL Records (Adele's label) :o But they're the type that can press new stock quickly and will be insured. I think it's a shame that the media keep going on about XL and Domino and then mentioning Adele and the Arctic Monkeys as examples, the real losers are the smaller labels who were relying on that stock selling to keep their cash flow going, were not insured and will probably go bust now. It's really, really sad. There are some great labels and great acts that have been seriously screwed by this.
August 10, 201113 yr Download sales in the Albums don't count for very much. That's very inaccurate, Jay Z & Kanye West album is download only this week and has shifted over 15,000. Edited August 10, 201113 yr by lee wallace
August 10, 201113 yr That's very inaccurate, Jay Z & Kanye West album is download only this week and has shifted over 15,000. Wouldn't the key word there be 'download only'? It's not going to be affected by the riots.
August 10, 201113 yr Wouldn't the key word there be 'download only'? It's not going to be affected by the riots. That's exactly what I was saying to a poster?
August 10, 201113 yr The riots have been at night, so I doubt it's made any difference, except where the shops have been directly attacked/looted. Lots of shops in city centres (including London) are going to be closing early all week most likely, and that's before you even get into the psychological effects this has on people not wanting to go to those sorts of places for a while (and around 75% of English physical album sales are in cities). Album sales are going to take a massive hit... I wouldn't be surprised if overall sales dip below 1m for the first time in living memory. That's very inaccurate, Jay Z & Kanye West album is download only this week and has shifted over 15,000. The vast majority of albums still sell far more physically than on download.
August 10, 201113 yr That's exactly what I was saying to a poster? Ah, you hadn't included the quote yet. Different context. Since it is download only anyway, this would mean that because buyers can't get it physically anyway, riots or not, they are going to go for downloads. And Jay-Z and Kanye's fanbase is going to be more download-oriented anyway (unlike Amy Winehouse when physical stock was small, whose downloads were still small because of fanbase) Download only albums are going to be a special case.
August 10, 201113 yr KanJay are only (meant to be) download-only until Friday so they may still suffer a bit from the riots.
August 10, 201113 yr KanJay are only (meant to be) download-only until Friday so they may still suffer a bit from the riots. Yes, since there's usually a 'weekend effect' :)
August 10, 201113 yr Download sales in the Albums don't count for very much. Download sales make up a small percentage of overall sales. However if people are downloading rather than buying physicals in the shops then they will account for a greater percentage. What you actually said above suggests that 1 sale on download is not equal to 1 physical sale which is obviously not true! A sales a sale regardless of format.....
August 10, 201113 yr Its obsurd to think that the riots have not affected sales for those that have posted above - Several branches of HMV got trashed and are closed at present, The majority of supermarkets [Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys & Morrisons] were all closed in and around London by 6pm on Monday and those that did open the following day were closed by 2pm....
August 10, 201113 yr Plus a few indie labels have had more or less their entire stock destroyed, including XL Records (Adele's label) :o That was very sad to hear.
