I will continue saying Englebert Humperdinck to myself. There is a huge amount of amusement to be gained out of it.

Considering I'd never heard of the man before today.

I want to hear the song now, I will try and like it, but at least we're not sending a nobody.

And you win the "Make Suedehead Feel Old Award" He was huge in the late sixties / early seventies

I would laugh if we actually did well/top 10/better than Blue thanks to the juries.
The thing is, I genuinely think we CAN actually get back inside the top 10 with this. Potentially win, too. I'm also expecting to be pleasantly surprised by the song. I think we're all under estimating just how popular he is and if he's number 1 trending on twitter, worldwide, then surely that's saying something? Aha. There's always that one song in the top 10 where you think "How on Earth did that finish so high?" maybe this year it could be our turn?
To think that 80-something Lys Assia was in the Swedish national final too! If she, the Russian Grannies and Bjorn Ranelid had all made it to Eurovision to join Engelbert it could have been a real party down in Baku!

You mean Swiss? :kink:

Azerbaijan is GMT +4 so the whole thing will start at midnight there. Imagine all of them falling asleep in the Green Room :D :D :D

Well I'll reserve judgement til I hear the song, but I shan't hold out much hope.

We should do well though, the whole 'oldest Eurovision entrant ever' thing could generate attention anyway, plus the juries will likely love it.

Being (relatively) known in Ireland, UK and USA (UK can't vote for themselves and USA does not participate) doesn't mean he's going to finish Top 10. 90% of Europe will not even know who the hell he is, and the other 10% who do probably need someone else to dial the number for them.

Why don't they just send someone who is ON A DEATHBED next year?

God I so want Engelfart to do awful (last dead last with nul points) in Baku!

Love the reactions here

Honestly never heard about him :P

On the contrary, I'd imagine that Engelbert is having to be paid quite a lot more to do it than our usual z-listers :o He's not current but he still has a huge fanbase and sells out shows easily worldwide, which is beyond the reach of pretty much any of our entrants for a long time (combined!).

If the track is good would you chart it in your personal chart  for some reason I can see Engelbert Humperdinck appearing in a few personal charts at some point :D

And just to think Engelbert was having his first #1 & million seller (of which he had 2) 45 years ago this week with Release Me SEE HERE

And it charted in the the TOP 50 for 56 continuous weeks

He has had a total of 16 UK hits

Release Me kept the Beatles back at #2 with Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever

Honestly, if it's a good song and he delivers an excellent performance, I see no reason why we can't be top 10, look at Bosnia-Herzegovina last year. I certainly don't think we'll win and the song won't be something that appeals to me, but good luck to him.

Of course. I never keep anything out of my personal chart if I like it, no matter how old or young somebody is - I'm not ageist! Willow Smith had a top 20 hit for me in 2010 with Whip My Hair at 9 years old whilst Tom Jones had a hit for me with (the excellent) If He Should Ever Leave You in 2008 at the age of 67 as he was then. Funnily enough I always thought that the latter song could have done fairly well at Eurovision with juries in the mix. It's a likeable enough song for televoters too so if Engelbert got something along the same lines then he might do better than people think. I don't know why people are hoping that he'll finish last, give him a chance and lets hear the song first!

And you were one of the very few people to vote SMOOSH! :(

It does strike me that this will be just be a different TYPE of shit to what the UK usually send, with people being cautiously optimistic that it might actually half decent. Looking at the positives, at least he can actually perform....

This is true! There's clearly no accounting for my taste  It hadn't even occurred to me to see how young they were!

I'm not disgusted at the decision, he's obviously going to give a flawless vocal. Let's just hope that the song is more melodic and momentous than Even If was in 2008. Andy Abraham gave a note perfect rendition of an absolute nothing of a song.

Too right. :D

Jemini Vs Englebert?

I know who I'd choose.

At least my Michael Jackson mash up added some much needed life into the song. 'Even If I Don't Stop (Til You Get Enough)'.

It's momentum in the right direction. There is some great talent behind the song and we have a very credible and well respected artist fronting the song. Sure, I've never heard of this guy, but if he's had 2 millions selling singles in the UK the chances are that the industry is well aware of him. Someone of this stature is a good move and hopefully in a few years time, if the BBC don't fuck it up, we will be in a situation were we can ask artists who are well respected, liked and in the charts currently to do ESC and they won't die laughing.
the number of people who haven't heard of Engelbert is so much higher than i expected! even if you only hear it once, it's not an easy name to forget

I'd only heard of him thanks to a beer commercial that came out a number of years back which featured Release Me on it. I seem to recall the song being re-released as a result too!

I've kind of come round to the idea of sending Engelbert today. If it's a classy song, we could do really rather well! Top 5 at best I'd say though.
