I think it shows it as more competitive rather than pathetic.

Not really, it just gives each song a massive one week advantage to make the charts incredibly boring and predictable, it's as close to rigging as you can get, making sure that there are very rarely two big releases on the same week just so each one get a number one. If they were truly competitive you'd actually see some battles, not the utter borefest we have now where we know that past X-Factor artist will be number one in week A and another will be number one in week B because they hold back the release for ages and won't ever have two release on the same week.

Definitely, there are so many big name releases coming up every week in the run up to Xmas, so it's inevitable that there will be different number 1's

Still, all these "here today gone tomorrow" number ones don't do much for me. We need a 4/5 weeker at the top really bad.

At least we've had more of those this year than 2009/10 :P The chart has regressed back to a new #1 every week now but I think that'll now just be a permanent fixture of summer/X Factor season and the rest of the year will always have less #1s.

Yeah I see where you guys are coming from too, I remember the days where a song could be #1 for 7 weeks (ie Bleeding Love) or 10 weeks (Umbrella) but then again Somone Like You was #1 for 5 weeks this year

However you cant please everyone, people would just complain they are bored of those songs and want a new number1, can never ever please everyone.

I'd say its a really competitive time period coming up, which I like, we dont always know who is going to be #1, we can have a guess looking at promo, tv/radio support but we cant always know. Its good to see 2 or 3 new songs each week released and having a good clear out though instead of having the same songs hanging around for weeks and weeks which annoy most people (ie Party Rock Anthem)

I think every year has been like this though? a lot of high profile names save their releases either for late summer or in the run up to X Factor, I can't remember the last time that a May/April period was very busy period, and I think even when we've had long running number 1s at the tail end of the year, there are still a lot of releases that debut behind them, it just an easy way to get decent first week sales as sales are high at this point, particularly with albums...

the perfect example 2 weeks ago was pixie lott though, her song was maybe average at best but it got the extra lift to take it to no1 because she performed on tv on the sunday night pushing her ahead of the rest.

in response to danielw2k his statement says it all really - 'there are so many big releases in the coming weeks'.it just shows that a big name = loads of airplay = a high chart entry after being held back.if the songs decent it would be released OA/OS and rise to the top 10 and sell loads regardless of the big named release!!

The Saturdays down to #10 :(

Looks like last week top 10.

id say that is because the biggest sales period is in 1/4 4 so most big artists release in oct-dec periods to get the xmas market.the same reason why jls/one direction/olly murs release a big uptempo summer hit in july-aug and then a slow autumnal ballad between sept-nov then the album in one of the weeks after in nov - so they get maximum album sales in the 6 week between the start of november and the first week of january.the first 6 months of the year are for newer artists and one hit wonders like jessie j and lmfao!!

It's getting really annoying with the number 1 changing each week.

How is Jessie J a one-hit wonder?

I personally thought Party Rock Anthem being #1 for 4 weeks was boring, although I know you all enjoyed it. You know, massive chart battle for #1 each week during that time...

That said, it's true that most of the biggest hits are actually on air, on sale. From this year, there's Born This Way, Someone Like You, S&M, Give Me Everything, Party Rock Anthem, for example. And last year there was When We Collide, Love the Way You Lie, Airplanes, Telephone, Rude Boy. So it can be a success. But would easily make the charts more boring to follow imo.

Maroon 5 would probably be on their 6th week at #1 or something ridiculous if everything was on air, on sale, out-selling all competition each week by 2:1.

The bit you highlighted says "newer artists and one hit wonders like jessie j and lmfao!!" That does not suggest she's a one hit wonder, but a new artist!

As someone else said, 3 top 10 hits and a top 20 hit does not make an artist a one hit wonder.
