Basically just by the fact not many people will know it. So if you haven't seen it discussed on Buzzjack or it's not the release schedule or Radio 1 playlist, then you'll be fine.

It's a difficult question which tore pretty much every contest apart at some point for about two years, and still hasn't REALLY been answered definitively. But, to my mind I've got a pretty good answer, although one which is very difficult to apply objectively: anything to my mind which the majority of contestants would be likely to discover/have likely discovered already without the contest is 'cheap', to my mind.

People define that as they will - for example, is prior hype reason enough to decry something as cheap if the artist is unknown and isn't likely to get big? To my mind, no, but it still depends. I feel it takes the sheen off a track if it's had a lot of hype and it's obvious a lot of people want to send it, so by and large I personally avoid sending tracks that have been posted about on Buzzjack, if I can help it.

The general idea is that it wouldn't be known by most people without you introducing it to them through the contest. It's a fine line.

Something that is in no personal charts before the contest, something that no-one knows at all, whether it is brand new or a bit older is perfect and not cheap at all.

If you entered something by, say, Christina Perri, right now, not Jar Of Hearts (that would get vetoed immediately), but something else, that would be considered cheap because it's off the back of a top 10 hit, and many people would probably discover it anyway.

And also because Jar of Hearts has already been entered!

hmm i see :/ well when my songs is shown, you can tell me then yeah:)

If it makes it past the mods without getting vetoed it likely isn't cheap.

Oh got me worried now, if i get vetoed would i have to wait for the next BJSC? or could i chose another one?
You choose another one. If you're worried about veto'ing, you can PM me whatever song you've sent/had in mind if you like and I can give you a rough idea of whether it's OK, or help you choose one that is OK.

You should have time if it gets vetoed. You've entered late though, so I'd get a backup ready in case.

I clearly need to read up on what has and hasn't been entered. Though that doesn't surprise me.

I DO check each of my potential entries against the list, btw. I also tend to try and find artists that haven't been entered before, so I'm not worrying about cheapness.

When did you confirm? I think they would have told you by now if they hadn't accepted your entry, unless you've only sent it within the past 24 hours or something.

Look at my entry this month. Some will not have heard it, some will. So I would describe it as 'fairly cheap'. Basically, the less people that have heard a song, the less cheap the song. Same for artists, if everyone is familiar with the artist, you could consider it cheap. Up until maybe the mid-20's, the contest bad it's fair share of cheapness.
As a guideline, the mod team may veto an entry if it falls under one or more of the following categories:

* The song is currently or has recently (within the last 6 months) been in the UK Top 40 Singles Chart

* The song is on a current Radio 1 playlist (any playlist published just prior to or during the confirmation period)

* The song is a fresh leak or forthcoming single by an artist with a significant following on Buzzjack.

* The song is by an artist, or associated act with an Artist Forum on Buzzjack.

* The song has received substantial radio and/or TV exposure.

* The song has performed significantly well in another contest on the forum, eg. Unknown Pleasures.

We look at each entry individually though. If one of the mods flags a song up as potentially banworthy, we all vote whether we're in favour of allowing it or not.

Nope! Arms has been but Jar of Hearts was never a BJSC entry...

I agree with Tirren's comment in general though, if it's already known on Buzzjack to some extent (i.e. a popular thread exists in a genre forum) then I won't be sending it, I like as many people to discover something brand new that they probably wouldn't have ever heard otherwise from my entries. Obviously there are some flukes sometimes when artists become unexpectedly big months after you've sent them but nobody can see into the future (well, more than a few weeks anyway in terms of the charts/music industry!)

Not as bad as some other artists anyway (Keri Hilson in whatever form was sent 9 times; bitch is persistent).
Just looking back through histroy, my artist was used twice before :S

I've sent the same artist far more times than that before.

Hell two appearances is just about Standard for an Ashtonise entrant.

When's the Alex Roots comeback? :P

I can't talk tbh, I've sent Alcazar three times

I can just FEEL what a cheap song is to be honest. There might be a few surprises in this contest, songs that you might see in there that you might expect to see vetoed, but we decided to be pretty lenient this month.

Also Wynter Gordon has been god knows how many times  Before Buy My Love was entered, I planned on sending Rumba the contest after, but Buy My Love was entered and I just thought it was a bit cheap and desperate to enter an artist who came top 10 last time! I came 8th with Oh My! anyway, so all was good in the end!
