Goo Goo Dolls in Sak race to top UK chart

Sak Noel’s hugely-successful continental hit Loca People is facing a close battle to top this coming weekend’s UK singles chart with the Goo Goo Dolls classic Iris after the 1998 song was covered on The X Factor.

The 3 Beat/All Around The World single Loca People, whose pre-release demand was demonstrated by a cover version entering the chart last Sunday, is presently around 3,000 sales ahead of the Warner Bros issued Iris, according to the Official Charts Company.

Iris has been a steady seller since its release 13 years ago, having clocked up more than 300,000 UK sales, although it has never charted higher than number 26. However, that will now change after X Factor contestant Frankie Cocozza was seen performing it on last Sunday’s show. It is placed at two on the newly-announced sales flashes, some 3,000 units ahead of A&M/Octone’s Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera single Moves Like Jagger.

AATW/Island act Dappy’s No Regrets, which debuted at one on last Sunday’s chart, is the fourth best seller of the new chart week, while Syco’s One Direction have slipped 3-5 in the week so far with What Makes You Beautiful.

Albums

Just behind One Direction in sixth place in the singles chart is Island signing James Morrison’s I Won’t Let You Go, but more significantly for him is that he is heading for a second UK number one album. First topping the chart in 2006 with debut Undiscovered, Morrison has a lead at this stage of the week of around 8,500 sales thanks to his newly-issued third album The Awakening. Columbia’s Kasabian are second with Velociraptor, having debuted at one last Sunday, while Asylum/Atlantic’s Ed Sheeran drops a place to three with +.

Morrison’s album is currently joined by three other newly-released albums among the Top 10 positions, led in fourth place by Neighborhoods, the first studio album in eight years by Island’s Blink 182. Roadrunner act Mastodon are eighth with The Hunter, while a place ahead of it Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon is readying another spell in the Top 10.

The 1973 classic is proving to be by far the most popular of EMI’s Floyd re-issues with the next best seller, Wish You Were Here, currently the 47th biggest album of the week. Also showing up presently in the Top 75 positions are Discovery (58th place), Animals (62), Meddle (67) and The Wall (74).

A very busy week for new albums could also see Top 40 entries this Sunday from A&M/Polydor’s Nicola Roberts, a Provogue label pairing of Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart, K Scope’s Steve Wilson, Wilco with their first Anti album since leaving Warner, Columbia/Roc Nation’s J Cole and Portobello’s Death In Vegas. A Warner Bros Goo Goo Dolls best of, meanwhile, is the week’s 40th top seller as it benefits from the X Factor cover of Iris.

[02] This is a mid thread for every artist do not go on and on and on about a certain artist to bring the board into disrepute.

[03] Please be patient when you are asking for a request, as you might not get an answer straight away.

[04] Any member asking for information that isn't in the updates we don't have, always read the topic before you post, I do not want to see questions like Where is Britney? repeated several times on every page of the thread, once is enough, bookmark the page if you don't have time to read all of the topic. Its not that hard.

[05] Do not use BLOCK CAPITALS when posting a sentence its considered as shouting and rude.

[06] Do not use Text Talk.

[07] Do not use a light colour font when posting please its hard to read the topic, not everyone has 100% vision.

[08] Please give a mention to who posted the chart info or the site name where you seen the mid info if you are copying and posting the chart info elsewhere, it takes forever trying to re-edit all the information up for you to see.

[09] Please do not post lists, or sales info unless you are told to by myself or a chart mod, if you do have sales info that you wish to share round them off to the nearest thousand and name your source, do not post precise sales figures.

[10] Regarding chart positions when posted when you see a sum/substraction for example 22+4, 40-7, if you add/subtract both figures together it gives you the actual position for the track. Its just simple addition or substraction. Go Figure.

It's hard to predict this week! I think MLJ may be no.1 today but will lose out to either Sak Noel or Goo Goo Dolls by then end. Obviously anything but Sak Noel at no.1 is a God send this week.
Iris might be no1 today but think Maroon 5 will overtake by end of week!!
Hoping Nicola can do better with her album than the singles!
Hopefully Nicola will be a bit of a surprise in the albums - hoping for at least top 20!
A lot of people I know have bought Nicola's album, I hope that's a good sign
Interesting...looks like Moves Like Jagger is definitely out of the race and it's all down to how well Iris holds up now. It lost about 19 hours worth of sales on Sunday compared to Sak Noel but I expect it wouldn't take them too long to close the deficit, the rate it was selling from Sunday night onwards.

Maroonina are screwed, once again :(

Now praying Nicola makes the top 40 with the album ...

I don't agree - like all non-OAOS new releases, Sak Noel will be extremely front-loaded, and was barely ahead of MLJ even combined. Iris will fade fast as the XF effect is brief.

Unless Sak Noel had an insane amount of bundle sales the we can't otherwise quantify, I can see MLJ gaining all week and just prevailing in the end.

Ordinarily I'd agree but for some reason this theory never seems to apply to held back dance releases, which often seem to continue growing as the week progresses.

NOOOOOOO that is too sad how long can Maroon5 keep missing No1. Iris is sure to drop but have never heard Sak Noel so not sure if it will hold on.

Nicola Roberts has had amazing reviews for her album hopefully she will do well and Joe will still be Top 5.

I'd agree with this, I think it's because the majority of dance singles these days are from new acts, people don't know them so they don't have a fanbase to make it really frontloaded, and something like Loca People is essentially faceless, people will have no idea who it's by or when it's out. Also, dance music doesn't tend to get as much radio/tv promotion as pop music does, so there's likely to be less pent up demand for it. It happened with We No Speak Americano and even Nero's recent number one continued to gain throughout the week.

Ugh at that Loca song being no.1 :(

However pleased Lighters is top 10, TEOG back top 40 as well as Aerosmith :D

Edited by Rob Summers

Well if MLJ is out of the race, I pray very hard for Iris to take Sak Noel down. Interestingly if MLJ stays at 3 this is the first time it will have fallen since release.
