September 30, 201113 yr Oh, this is going to be hard. I've given the final a listen through. There isn't a single song I that I can't see myself giving points to. And there are definitely more than 10 that I really want to give points. IMO, this is a very strong final. No song below an 8/10, I think. My votes shall take a while to get finalized.
September 30, 201113 yr I may have DNQ'd but I still think some brilliant tracks made the final from SM2. I know which songs I'd like to see do well - and ultimately which songs I would prefer to see in the bottom 10. :kink:
September 30, 201113 yr I feel quite sorry for the more indie countries, I can see why some are annoyed. But I think some go a bit OTT and maybe come across bitter even though I'm sure they're not. BJSC is a lot more pure pop lately and they have little to choose from points-wise. It's just that the flood of new countries are mostly pop and so that is reflected in the entries. Shame, as I'm open minded and do love a bit of variety, my points are never 100% one sided - there's always a handful of great indie songs that get or at least contest for points so it's a shame pop has really taken over. And this is coming from the person who enters HyunA and Joe Jonas
September 30, 201113 yr I can see how indie countries are getting frustrated as pop doesn't really appeal to them much, but that goes for some of the mainstream pop countries like me, who has literally no interest in indie songs apart from the odd one or two. :P
September 30, 201113 yr Yes but the mainstream pop countries have plenty to choose from, but indie is getting far too sparse so I can't see any problems for 'mainstream pop' countries.
September 30, 201113 yr The indie countries can enter some great things, it's true. This just wasn't their contest, and for my money, the better indie entries were in SF2, and they didn't make it. And while my votes have been a bit pop at times, I think, given the forum I moderate, I'm not that pop in my entries. I'm being outdone in my poppiness by all the other new guys. Not sure how long that will keep up. But yes, we need to keep the variety. I actually wouldn't mind an indie takeover after this pop contest.

But the indie countries will only have a few songs that appeal to them and have to vote for songs they don't like. It's quite different and imaginably frustrating when their entries don't do well. I think that it goes to show that 'Inescapeable' winning the last contest definitely means there has been a pop take over, when a few contests back it wouldn't of got anywhere near winning.
September 30, 201113 yr We did have a big big big indie contingent a while back. I think we need a balance though so one side isn't more dominant than the other. The return of the RnB block would be nice.
September 30, 201113 yr I really want the indie takeover tbh, then the all the pop countries can see how the likes of Grebo, Dandy* and Martin feel when they have to choose 10 for votes when realistically they only really like about 4/5. It's all fine complaining about indie but it's literally at least 80% pop, a few crossover and very sparse amounts of indie. So generally not being into pop at all, in the same way some of you aren't into indie at all, they (understandly) have a hard time voting. Luckily I'm pretty open minded to whatever so I don't mind there being lots of pop or lots of indie, I always vote for a bit of both. EDIT: Or R&B  That would be AMAZING. But the indie countries wouldn't like that, except maybe 'adult contemporary' R&B like say Chrisette Michele or Marsha Ambroious for example Edited September 30, 201113 yr by Liаm
September 30, 201113 yr The day I don't really want to vote for more than 10 entries in the final is the day every country enters death metal I shall be surprised at the low quality. But yes, having to vote for songs you don't like must be quite frustrating, especially if your favourites have already been kicked out of the competition. And I would love some RnB to come back. One of the candidates for my next entry is quite RnB, actually.

The return of the RnB block would be nice. PUH-LEASE. Indie was NEVER big. Granted, there was a nice amount of indie entries back then but not 'big big big'.
September 30, 201113 yr But yes, having to vote for songs you don't like must be quite frustrating, especially if your favourites have already been kicked out of the competition. That's the frustrating thing, I often find that I prefer the songs I vote for in the semi to the ones I get to choose from in the final. I think I'd prefer it if it was one big final but I understand the reasons behind why it isn't.
September 30, 201113 yr PUH-LEASE. Indie was NEVER big. Granted, there was a nice amount of indie entries back then but not 'big big big'. Compared to now it was positively HUGE.
September 30, 201113 yr I thought the balance of genres when I hosted BJSC XXXIIV was perfect. Pop, dance, indie, RnB - it was all there and no one genre tended to overpower the others. Then again there were exactly 40 entrants - had there been 50, those extra 10 nations may well have all been pop FANZ adding more weight to the pop genre overall. As such, that's exactly what's happened as BJSC is now getting close to 50+ nations per month. That also means with more nations voting in the final, the chance of a widespread content (ie; points going to all the songs) results in a relatively ok winner. Lana Del Rey 'Video Games' was clearly a real genuine winner to collect nearly 200 points despite the most points awarded by every nation being 12, rather than 18.
September 30, 201113 yr Funnily enough I really enjoyed the last one (I meant musically not just because of being a co-host) and that was fairly pop-dominated but this contest really has been meh. What with Same Difference and Jedward both being entered and the tedious amount of sub-Ibiza 90s retro dance pop (a genre that dominates the charts and I f***ing hate with a vengeance) AND that shit Sugar thing as well... well roll on XXXIX please...
September 30, 201113 yr Sometimes we just get contests that really appeal to one specific bloc of nations and is just shit for everyone else.

Luckily I'm pretty open minded to whatever so I don't mind there being lots of pop or lots of indie, I always vote for a bit of both. You only have to take a look at my personal chart, and you won't find a pop track in sight, Indie/Alternative music is my genre and the odd dance track. Its like this month I went completely different out of my comfort zone and that went all pear shaped. I seriously think BJSC is not for me anymore, I prefer Unknown Pleasures, I've already got a track planned for the next BJSC comp, again its completely different route, hopefully it will appeal to everyone plus the artist is pretty unknown hopefully it be a great discovery like Lana Del Ray.
September 30, 201113 yr You've been saying that EXACT thing for over a year now Mikey. Either fuck off or quit the whining. You're like a 2 year old having a fit and it's irritating.
