Is it too much to predict Lana Del Rey to be the first #1 of 2012 on the strength of the iTunes gift card :D I can see the track performing better next week when all the clap trap above her start falling.

Probably not but if Military Wives hold on long enough, Lana might have the first brand new UK #1 of 2012 with 'Born To Die'. :D

Why does everyone think Lana will climb a lot next week? Most of the places it climbs from stuff like Alex Day, Nirvana, Lou Monte, The Pogues, Mariah Carey, Stacey Solomon, The Cast Of The Only Way Is Essex (am I missing anything?) dropping out will be cancelled out by other old songs overtaking with the gift card effect. Lana won't benefit significantly from it herself, the song has been nowhere near big enough.

(VG isn't a re-entry anyway, it was #40 last week).

Maybe not but 'Video Games' has at least held up really well. I've seen UK #1 singles in the last couple of years spend less weeks in the chart. Sure, the #1s have massive first weeks sales then tail off rapidly. I'd like to see 'Video Games' become a slow burner - how about being the new 'Rockstar' (long stayer only in this a genuine incredible song :D ).

The #1s that tailed off quickly won't benefit from the gift card effect much either. The songs that will get the biggest boosts will be the likes of Someone Like You, Moves Like Jagger, Party Rock Anthem, Price Tag, We Found Love, Rolling In The Deep, The A Team, What Makes You Beautiful etc. - high peaking but also sustaining hits. I could also see Set Fire To The Rain and maybe Hello getting decent boosts from it because of their insane longevity despite the low peak. Video Games has held up quite well but it's not in the same league as those two.

this could have put MWC n.1 even if xfactor had released this week, maybe this is why they released before as it was likely they'd get beat anyway

Except the decision was probably made long before anyone knew Military Wives existed :P

I'm actually hating the top tier of the chart this week, all these campaigns and charity singles are MUCH worse than any X-Factor winner single, it's literally flooded.

This has probably been asked but why is Lana Del Rey climbing?

Nothing will ever beat watching the video of Rage Against The Machine n.1 shown on Top of the pops xmas special.

but MWC beating x factor this year will just do fine :)

How much has MW sold according to MW? I haven't seen the MW MWs and so I don't know what's going on with MW but then MW are a bit of a mess so they're probably wrong anyway. I love the MW song so much but I really do hate MW.

 the MW acronym is so confusing this week

The Military Wives single Wherever You Are sold 319,464 units before today, according to the latest Official Chart Company midweek data - meaning around 80,000 sales were achieved yesterday.

Coldplay's Paradise currently sits at No.5 with 21,748 sales, followed by Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit - which boasts 17,074

It won't let me copy the whole MW article, can anyone with a MW sub please help, I think its the web link to the page has gone dead.

ugh

On a separate note, no mids yet

Ouch at Leona. Is this the only top ten hit to only spend 1 week in the top 40 (I know there's Wet Wet Wet 'Weightless' that crashed 10-75-OUT) but are there any other obvious ones I forgot about?

Recent top ten hits with only 1 week top 40:

Manic Street Peachers - Autumnsong No. 10 4/8/2007 (dropped to No. 45)

Wet Wet Wet - Weightless No. 10 16/2/2008 (dropped from top 75 altogether)

Delerious? - History Maker No. 4 10/4/2010 (dropped to No. 61)

Leeds United Team & Supporters - Leeds Leeds Leeds (Marching On Together) No. 10 29/5/2010 (dropped from top 75 altogether)

Emma's Imagination - Focus No. 7 2/10/2010 (dropped to No. 53)

Trashmen - Surfin' Bird No. 3 25/12/2010 (dropped to No. 41)

Oh yes, forgot about Surfin Bird last year. That campaign was terrible, and what was the worse was everyone supporting the campaign were all deluded and attacked people that thought X Factor would be #1 (I know the SLTS campaign isn't much different except it'll only get low top 10)

Songs that will fall out of the top 40 next week should be

- Dominick The Donkey

- Forever Yours

- Smells Like Teen Spirit

- Driving Home For Christmas

- Fairytale Of New York

- All I Want For Christmas Is You

- Mistletoe

- Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

- Last Christmas (both versions)

- Any other Xmas songs that make it T40 on Sunday

So that's at least 10 songs that definately will drop quickly after christmas  expect next weeks chart to be exciting with massive climbs from Rihanna, Maroon 5 etc. It would also be nice if Lloyd could re-peak with DTME(MT) :)

I could see Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want sticking around a while, even climbing. It might be on a Christmas advert but it's not really a Christmassy song. Maybe it's just wishful thinking though, it's prolly my fave advert song of the year, deserves a better peak.

I thought they brought the final forward a week because they wanted Wembley? And Wembley was already taken for the week XF usually finishes?
Single sales initially seem to be strong this week with number 5 already over the 20,000 barrier.
meaning around 80,000 sales were achieved yesterday.

Not obviously, as the versions at 1 & 3 were probably combined, so that included the 'old' sales of the #3 versions.

But even selling 80k a day we'll get another 320k by Sunday. I think it'll probably be more around 250k mark.
