August 16, 201212 yr I've seen the movie a second time now and finished the book. There were a lot more differences than I expected, especially near the end but I don't really mind with most of what was cut out. I'd have liked the movie to make it clear that the mutts were the dead tributes and the bread & syrup coming from sponsors would've been fine but the movie is already two hours twenty minutes (although it really flies by) so I'm not bothered that scenes in the cave were cut down and I think the scene where Thresh lets Katniss go is fine how it is. The movie did the final fight scene better imo and it seems a bit odd that parts of the ending were completely cut out, especially everything with Peeta's leg but oh well, I think the movie nailed it and the scene with the gamemaker at the end was a nice addition although I didn't pick up on it the first time. I don't think the scene with Peeta/Katniss was needed as from people I've talked to they managed to pick up that Katniss might have been faking her love for him anyway. I also have seen this movie twice, the film is awesome

August 16, 201212 yr OK so I've never read the books and went into the film feeling quite nervous that I would hate it because it's primarily aimed at early teens BUT... it was quite good. The 1st hour was a quite wonderful comment on the reality tv pheomenon bolted onto an equally solid commentary on capitalism and the 1% (both this and Dark Knight Rises? Must be something in the air) Unfortunately we get to the actual games and it went totally flat. Predictable and really rather cliched I found. Plus 24(?) entrants amd only 3 have anything more than a sketchily drawn personality. This could have worked so much better as two films or a series. I don't know the source material but this seems something of a missed opportunity. However I thoroughly enjoyed it for an hour so it gets a slightly generous 6/10
August 29, 201212 yr HMV have sent out my DVD. :D Can't wait to watch and cry my eyes out all over again. Has anyone seen who they've cast to play Finnick? As shallow as it sounds, he isn't as good looking as I imagined from reading the book..
August 29, 201212 yr Yeah that was my initial thought as well, he is alright looking but I expected someone on the level of Zac Efron/Liam Hemsworth to be honest from how they described him in the book wearing barely anything to show off his body and get the sponsors won over because he was SO physically amazing.
September 1, 201212 yr So it's Finnick then? Not as good as he was described in books but it'll do I guess. Unfortunately we get to the actual games and it went totally flat. Predictable and really rather cliched I found. Plus 24(?) entrants amd only 3 have anything more than a sketchily drawn personality. This could have worked so much better as two films or a series. I don't know the source material but this seems something of a missed opportunity. Indeed. The games were actually the best part of the book. So gutted they made Rue look like she's just one of the insignificant characters. :( SO excited about the second film. The games will be the center of everything again so I hope this time they covered everything they needed in the first film pre-games-wise and will concentrate primarily on the action. And I can't even think about what's going to happen in the 3rd and 4th films. I predict the 3rd film will be dull with them just showing how everyone lives in the District 13 and stuff but the 4th one should be good. There's quite a LOT happening in the last book so I'm not sure that dividing it into 2 films is enough really.
September 1, 201212 yr Yeah it might be a bit much but to be honest I think the last book could do with being split in 3 films, I know they wouldn't do it but there really is so much in them that I think some vital bits are bound to be left out :(
November 27, 201311 yr Watched this yesterday afternoon/evening in anticipation for watching the sequel. I can see its potential (I really want to read the book! it seems like so much was skimmed over) but it really fell flat on so many elements. Sorry to go all INTELLECTUAL but when I see 'dystopian future sci-fi' I expect some sort of social criticism or parallels with the present (or past). It could've so easily been almost there but it was almost completely absent. Even Harry Potter managed that and I think its main purpose was rather to be an adventure/escapist series. And scene in particular was DIRE from 2:05 onwards. Laughed out loud. Edited November 27, 201311 yr by Harve
November 27, 201311 yr Yeah, but it serves them right for not following the book like Catching Fire did. As if Katniss would actually FALL off a tree wot! (Don't think it's in the book either) J-LAW LOOKS SO YOUNG THERE OMG
December 21, 201311 yr I finally watched this tonight after getting the Blu-Ray and my, it's such a stunning film from start to finish. Actually CONNECTED to the characters, and it really was one of the best I've seen. The scene where Rue died was so beautiful; heartbreaking, but beautiful. Brilliant acting from J-Law. Josh Hutcherson was actually fantastic too, great acting from him especially in the scenes where he was resting / healing and there was some cosy time between himself and Katniss. :kink: Thoroughly looking forward to watching 'Catching Fire' now, will probably get it a year after the Blu-Ray is made available though. :heehee:
December 22, 201311 yr Katniss' relationship with Rue is shown SO much better in the book. As is pretty much everything else really. Poor ecranisation of such a brilliant book.
