17. Snoop Dogg vs. David Guetta - Sweat

Peak; #4

Weeks; 31

Points; 2081

Chart run;

'Wet' was originally the first single from Snoop Dogg's 11th studio album 'Doggumentary'. This remix by French producer David Guetta, titled 'Sweat', was released at the beginning of March 2011 and became a big worldwide hit, going on to peak at #4 in the UK after starting at #16. It eventually ended up as the 19th biggest selling song of 2011 within the UK. I'm not keen on it personally but there are worse still to come (*cough*16*cough*) and I know Bray is a huge fan.

Odd that "Sweat" barely does any better here than it did in the sales chart given its mammoth chart run and sub-top 3 peak.

16. Adele - Make You Feel My Love

Peak; #7 (during 2011)

Weeks; 43

Points; 2082

Anyone who has watched any TV talent show or charity telethon since about August 2010 will doubtless have come across this song multiple times. Adele originally plonked out this Bob Dylan cover as the fourth single from her debut album '19' back in 2008. It originally peaked at just number 26. Around August/September 2010, the song was performed in the style of Adele a couple of times on the X Factor which finally made the song strike a major chord with the public, causing it to re-peak first at #24 and then at #4. Since then it's become a staple of large audience TV events. The song entered the UK top 10 on four separate occasions (albeit only for a week each time) when it received high profile usage after high profile usage; the last of those occasions was at the start of 2011 when it was used on, if my memory serves me correctly, Dancing On Ice? After this conveniently returned Adele to the public consciousness just in time for her new album '21', the rest is history for Adele who has undeniably now cemented herself a place in the ranks of legends of the musical world. Stay tuned for three more entries from Ms. Adkins.

You may or may not be right. :o [Good that someone still cares about this countdown anyway].

15. Christina Perri - Jar Of Hearts

'Jar Of Hearts' originally became a hit in America in the summer of 2010 after being used on 'So You Think You Can Dance' and went on to be used in 'Glee' in May 2011. It took about a year for it to cross over to the UK where it looked to be stalling outside the top 40 for a few weeks. After being hammered by Heart, given a price reduction and placed onto Radio 1s playlist it became a massive hit in the UK, eventually peaking at #4 on two different occassions and Christina has since performed this on both 'Strictly Come Dancing' & 'Dancing On Ice'. Christina may in the future be seen as a one hit wonder although 'A Thousand Years' was a minor success, sneaking into the top 40 after being featured on the soundtrack for 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt.1' and her album 'lovestrong.' has done OK. It's been played to death now but I still love this song over 18 months after it first came to my attention.

14. Bruno Mars - Grenade

Peak; #1

Bruno Mars' highest entry on this countdown is the second and worst of his three #1s off debut album 'Doo-Wops & Hooligans'. 'Grenade' was the first big release of the year, spending two weeks at #1 in January and opening with nearly 150k, a tally only bested by One Direction, Professor Green, Little Mix and Military Wives during 2011. That's about all I have to say for this. Dull, dull song. Stay tuned for #13.

13. Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

Unlucky number 13 is the most annoying song of 2011, 'I Need A Dollar' by American Aloe Blacc [birth name Egbert], taken from album 'Good Things'. The song became one of the twenty biggest sellers of 2011 in the UK after gradually working its way up the chart and eventually peaking at #2. Although he hasn't followed up the singles success in the UK the album did manage to go top 10. Let's quickly move on to the much better #12 & #11.

12. Chris Brown feat. Benny Benassi - Beautiful People

Rihanna is the victor of her rivalry with Chris Brown on this chart then, as she still has another entry to come while this is Brown's top entry. 'Beautiful People' was the second single from Brown's fourth studio album 'F.A.M.E.' and conclusively proved Chris' return as a major chart force to an even greater extent than lead single 'Yeah 3X'. It peaked two places higher than 'Yeah 3X', making #4 for two weeks and also outsold it and became Chris Brown's highest selling single to date. Although 2012 has finally brought him a #1 hit in the form of 'Turn Up The Music' its initial chart progress suggests that 'Beautiful People' may remain his biggest seller for some time still. Despite being his biggest UK success the song wasn't a big hit in the USA, peaking at just number forty-three there. Italian house music DJ/producer Benny Benassi produced this song and had a credit as a featured artist, meaning he scored his first major UK hit for some eight years - 'Satisfaction', credited to Benny Benassi pts. The Biz, was a #2 hit in 2003. Benassi scored a second top 20 hit in his own right later in 2011 with 'Cinema' featuring Gary Go.

11. Nicki Minaj - Super Bass

Peak; #8

Points; 2161

Chart run;

The third song in a row to have charted for 33 weeks and finishing just outside of the top 10 is 'Super Bass', the biggest hit from Nicki Minaj's debut album 'Pink Friday'. Originally taken from the deluxe version of the album, it seemed to be a fan favourite from the start so it was no surprise when it took off in the way it did to become Nicki's biggest solo hit at the time. At one point looking as if it would stall just outside the top 10 as it did here, it eventually peaked at #8 and has thus done very well here. One of my personal favourite songs of 2011.

So, only the top 10 left to go now. Any predictions?

10. Rihanna - S&M

Peak; #3

Two songs in the top 10 of this countdown make it that high despite negligible if any TV support - one of those still to come had this simply because they never made a video for it (!) but this one had its video banned for obscene content. 'S&M' (or 'Come On' as the chart show referred to it, even the title being too vulgar to air) was the third single from Barbadian superstar Rihanna's fifth studio album 'Loud' and it celebrates the joys of the titular... 'activities'. I won't go into detail about this but suffice to say that when Rihanna says chains and whips excite her, she doesn't mean in the same way that Christmas excites a young child. Moving away from the lyrical content, this song was another big hit for Rihanna despite the controversy and although it failed to be a third straight #1 it did spend three weeks at its peak of #3. After initially dropping out of the top 10 it had a brief return on the release of a remix featuring Britney Spears. Due to the quirks of the US Billboard Hot 100, 'S&M' is officially counted as a #1 for Britney despite the fact she was credited on the weekly charts for just a single week; so in a way, the chart run of this in the USA was 1-x for Britney.

9. Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory

Peak; #6

Weeks; 33

Points; 2214

Chart run;

6-6-18-23-28-16-8-7-11-13-14-23-28-30-34-26-30-37-47-48-38-33-34-61-41-59-37-34-40-52-81-73-83-

The first of two songs from Lady Gaga in the top 10 is 'The Edge Of Glory', the third single from 'Born This Way' which was originally a promotional single for the album before being made an official single due to how well it performed (better than the second single 'Judas'). Despite its longevity & sales, it missed the top 5 after being released On Air/On Sale but recieved multiple boosts in the form of the very cheap music video & Kitty performing her idol's song at her X Factor audition in 2011.

8. Adele - Set Fire To The Rain

Peak; #11

Weeks; 34

Points; 2232

Chart run;

79-44-69-99-x(1)-83-46-25-23-21-12-11-11-12-13-13-14-17-15-20-21-25-26-26-29-38-36-21-30-45-51-51-61-56-59-

The only song in the top 20 to have never made the official top 10 is shockingly as high as number eight. 'Set Fire To The Rain' was originally pencilled in as the second single from Adele's earth-shattering second album '21' (which today surpassed Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' to become the fifth best selling album of all time in the UK) but it was changed to 'Someone Like You' relatively last-minute - not a poor decision. Several months passed as people wondered what the hell Adele was doing before 'Set Fire To The Rain' finally took off, eventually peaking at number eleven for two weeks - but despite the lowish peak in comparison to the two preceding top 2 hits it's still another undeniable huge smash for Adele, with it heading towards the 600k mark and challenging Jason Mraz's I'm Yours as the highest selling non-top 10 hit of all time. It did rather better in the USA, where it was a third straight #1 for her (breaking innumerable records in doing so), spending two weeks at the summit. Oh yeah, also it achieved all of the above without an official music video, because apparently Adele is too lazy to make videos, hence the Royal Albert Hall performance above. This is also my personal highlight off the album and Adele's discography in general.

Great great song, and considering how well it did without a video, that is such a feat. It would be pointless if a video is ever shot now!
9. Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory

Shocked, but pleasently surprised at how well this has done, considering it's peak. :wub:
